Work Text:
It’s been over an hour and he hasn’t stopped. Husk isn’t sure if he’ll ever stop. Granted, he has to run out of paper at some point. About an hour and a half ago, Angel Dust sat at Husk’s bar and requested a drink. Nothing out of the ordinary so Husk gave him one without thinking much of it. He doesn’t usually pay that much attention to the spider (or at least he tries not to) so when he heard paper he was very confused.
He turned around to find Angel’s drink empty, his glass cleaned and dried somehow, and a pile of small strips of paper in front of the spider. Angel starts doing something complicated, a lot of folding mostly, to the papers until they somehow come out looking like little stars. He continues doing this for a full hour, slowly but surely filling up his now very full glass.
“Legs.” Husk starts, more than a little curious for several reasons. “What’re ya doing?”
“Hm?” Angel looks up midway through another paper star. “Oh! I’m makin’ paper stars!”
“I see that. Why?”
“I dunno. I’m bored I guess.” Angel says, but Husk has listened to him talk long enough to memorize his speech patterns and he knows full well when the other is omitting something.
“Mhm,” Husk says, not believing it for a second.
“Okay! When I’m havin’ a hard day if ma thoughts are too loud… I make paper stars. I just kinda space out.” Angel explains, looking down to finish the current one in his hand. “One time, I did it for six straight hours.”
“Damn.”
“Helps quiet the thoughts.”
“Really?”
Angel looks back up. “Mhm. Wanna learn?”
“Sure.” Husk tries to hide the fact that he’d be willing to learn how to make actual stars for Angel.
“On one condition!”
“Okay?”
“You teach me howta play cards sometime.” Angel smiles mischievously.
“Like what? Poker?”
“Sure.” Angel shrugs.
“Alright, I’m in.”
Angel hands him a slim slip of paper and then grabs his own. “Okay so first thing is this,” He folds the end of the paper as if he were starting to tie his shoe. “You gotta smush it down but just don’t p-“
Angel is cut off by Husk, far too eager to impress Angel, pulling and subsequently ripping the paper. “Oops.”
Angel sighs, grabbing another piece for him. “Okay, listen to the full instruction this time.”
“Sorry.” Husk mumbles, a little pink in the face.
“So you just gotta fold it down so it’s ‘tied’ but not broken.” He looks up to examine Husk’s progress. “Yeah! Like that! Now you fold the paper around the sides, careful not to fold ‘em over the edges that’ll fuck it up.”
Husk starts folding it, looking a little confused about where it’s supposed to go. “It’ll wanna go its own way, just let it. And don’t push down on it too hard.”
They continue until they both get to the end of the paper. “Now you tuck the end into one of the folds,” Angel smirks to himself but follows his own instructions. “This next part’ll be easy for us ‘cause we got claws. Ya see how it kinda looks like a hexagon?”
“Yeah?” Husk says, inspecting his own creation. “Not a star.” He points out.
“No shit. Here’s what ya gotta do.” Angel takes his claw and pushes one of the flat sides of the hexagon in, continuing the process until it successfully looks like a star. Husk mirrors him and shows Angel the (slightly mutilated) star.
“Good job, kitty!” Husk blushes violently, tossing the star into Angel’s collection.
Husk doesn’t show anyone else that he now knows how to make paper stars, nor does he tell Angel that he practices it as much as he can. But Angel isn’t the slightest bit surprised when he comes home from a particularly rough day at work to find almost five full glasses of paper stars on his nightstand.
He is a little proud though.
