Work Text:
Rui still didn't know how she had managed to get this far. She had not only gotten her crush to like her back and date her, but had even managed to ask her on a date. Rui had expected to die before she would be brave enough to actually do any of that, but here she was.
She had managed to invite Tamao to a movie night date. They were alone at Tamao's house. School was out on break. At least no one could disturb them now.
Rui was a disaster, and that was putting it lightly. She was very tense and anxious the entire time since knocking on the door. Tamao was patient as always and didn't seem to mind her nerves. Rui was trying her best to calm down. It was hard, though.
She couldn't help but worry that somehow she was going to mess this up. That she was going to do something wrong or say something weird. She knew that was just her anxiety talking, but she couldn't shake off those thoughts from her head. She hopes Tamao couldn't tell just how nervous she was over all of this.
"Is this movie okay?" Tamao's voice broke her out of her head.
Rui blinked and stared at the TV screen. Tamao had been searching for movies on a streaming service. She had finally found out that seemed good enough to watch.
Rui read the blurb on the screen. It did sound interesting.
"It... it's fine." She managed to reply. Her voice didn't want to work right now.
"Then let's watch it." Tamao smiled and turned it on.
Rui didn't know if she could get any redder than she already was, but it felt like it when Tamao did that. She was amazed that she was somehow not on the verge of passing out.
Things calmed down a little as the movie started. Rui was able to focus more on the movie than Tamao and calmed down. The movie was pretty interesting. Tamao had picked a good one to watch.
They mostly sat in silence for the movie. There wasn't much to say. It was probably for the best Rui didn't need to try and talk. She still wasn't sure if her voice would work or not.
She wished she wasn't this anxious. That she could get over this. Tamao was her girlfriend. There was no reason to be so anxious and flustered around her anymore. But, she couldn't help it. It was how she was.
Rui was startled by a weigh falling onto her shoulder. She barely stopped herself from jumping off the couch. She whipped her head to the side to look.
Tamao had laid her head against Rui's arm. Rui was breathing quickly as she took in the situation. Tamao appeared to be asleep. Was it really that late? She hadn't looked tired.
Rui glanced at the clock. It was getting close to midnight. It was quite late. They had started the movie late. Things had gotten in the way of their plans.
Rui had no idea what to do. She was stiff. Did she say something? Did she try to shake her awake? Should she not wake her up? There were so many thoughts running around in Rui's head. She didn't know which ones to listen to.
She tried to speak, but her throat was dry and nothing came out. Was she really getting that flustered by this? She really was a disaster at this stuff...
Rui shakily brought her hand to Tamao's shoulder and gently shook her. Rui was maybe a bit too cautious about how rough she was. Tamao wasn't waking up from her shaking. Was she being too gentle?
Rui took in a shaky breath and shook Tamao a bit harder. That seemed to have worked as Tamao let out a noise. Her eyes opened. Rui froze in her tracks, hand still on Tamao's shoulder.
"Rui-chan...?" Tamao spoke.
"Y-you... you... fell... asleep." Rui managed to choke out.
"I did? Sorry." Tamao sat back up.
Rui quickly retracted her hand. She was still as stiff as a board. Her heart was pounding in her chest.
"It's late." Tamao commented after a glance at a clock. "We should probably head to bed."
"R-right." Rui nodded.
Tamao got up from the couch and held out a hand to Rui. Rui stared at her hand like a deer in headlights. After a long while, she snapped out of it and took Tamao's hand. She didn't even want to know how red her face probably was right now.
Tamao guided her to her bedroom. Rui looked around. It was kind of what she expected. Nothing too out of the usual for Tamao.
"Are you going to be okay sharing the bed?" Tamao asked quietly.
Rui didn't know what to say. This was the part of the night she had been dreading the most. Would she be able to hold it together for something like this? She was already a mess as it was.
"I... I'll be fine." Rui replied, not believing a word coming out of her mouth.
Tamao got into the bed first. Rui nervously joined her after a few minutes of contemplating. She was very tense as she laid down beside Tamao. Rui was kind of jealous about how calm Tamao could be about all of this.
"This was fun." Tamao said.
"Y-yeah. It was." Rui agreed.
"Goodnight, Rui-chan." Tamao smiled at her.
"Goodnight, T-Tamao-senpai." Rui replied.
"You still haven't dropped that? You don't need to call your girlfriend senpai."
"S-sorry..."
"We'll get there."
"Yeah..."
The two fell into silence. Tamao closed her eyes. Rui did the same and willed her pounding heart to calm. She needed to try and get some sleep. They had plans for tomorrow. The last thing she needed was to be sleep-deprived during them.
Rui cracked open her eyes. Tamao looked so peaceful. It was still hard to believe she actually liked her. Rui had never thought she would get this far. She had always been so worried Tamao wouldn't like her that way and it would make things awkward. It was nice to know that wasn't the case.
She closed her eyes again. Time to try and sleep. She really needed to.
