“We should stop to eat,” Matthew said as they approached a small pub.
“It’s only an hour until dinner at the hotel, I think we should wait,” Mary said.
Matthew stopped the car near the pub.
“It will be thirty minutes until we get back, and then we’ll need to change, and heaven forbid if we show up in these traveling clothes.”
“You do have a point there,” Mary agreed.
They walked inside the pub. The interior was dimly lit, with some old men sitting in a corner, and no obvious employee or proprietor. They stood looking around, and at some point one of the men in the corner noticed them. He walked over and grunted something they couldn’t quite understand, though it was presumably meant to be English.
Mary looked at Matthew, expecting him to give her some sign of what to do next, but his glance seemed to indicate the same question in return.
The old man seemed to understand that they weren’t familiar with his dialect, and walked over to the bar and picked up a large mug.
“Yes, two, please,” Matthew said. “And something to eat?”
The man gestured at the nearby table, and they sat down.
Matthew took a sip. “This is practically water,” he muttered.
“Just as well,” Mary said. “What do you suppose we’ll be eating?”
“It’s an adventure, I suppose.”
