Work Text:
The kitchen was silent. Euphemia Potter was stood at the head of the table with her hands on her hips. Her hair had been pulled back into an efficient bun 4 minutes earlier.
James and Peter were sitting on one side of the table,Sirius and Remus on the other. None of them were looking Effie in the eye.
James was looking at his lap like a wounded puppy. Peter looked constipated. Sirius was looking at the other three boys, agitated and restless. Remus was chewing his lip and looking at the clock on the wall.
"I hope you understand that what you did was stupid and reckless! If you boys don't start to think about your actions and get your emotions in check you are going to get a serious kick in the arse!"
The actions in question had been going into the muggle town and causing some trouble with a gang of local boys. Well,Sirius had gotten into trouble with them and Remus had been straight there to help. James had stepped in after the first punch had been thrown at Remus. Remus had been the only one of them who had really been able to hold his own. He was the only boy standing on his feet when Effie had come out of the muggle pharmacy. Peter had tried to stop one of the boys from hitting James in the stomach, and had succeeded but got a fist in the face as a result, and hadn't gotten up of the floor since. James and Sirius had fallen a couple times, but took the hits well, but were quite disorientated by the end. though the boys were quite beaten up by the end, they came out of it better than the other group, who had scrambled away when Effie appeared, clutching broken noses and bruises egos.
As she finished shouting,Effie slumped down into the chair at the head of the table. On the table was a jumper that she had been knitting top down before they left for town, and she picked it up again to start working on it instantly. As her fingers quickly moved over the yarn and needles, stitching loop into loop,Sirius shook with energy. He had not calmed down since the fight. While the other boys sunk into their chair with guilt he shot up from his. He wasn't really angry at Effie, but at the boys who had walked past them and jeered at them. at the boys who had seen Sirius holding hands with Remus, and shouted "fag!" on their way past. He was angry at himself for wanting to start a fight,at his friends for wanting to leave the boys alone. However, his flame needed to burn somehow.
He couldn't think of how to express his anger, and he didn't want to say anything actually mean to the mother that had chosen to take him in as her own. so he splurted a useless comment, only made angry by his tone and volume, and not from any true venom in his heart.
"How the hell do you even do that anyway?!"
Effie looked up from the knitting that he was talking about. Remus put his head in his hands and James finally looked up with worry. It appeared that Effie was still a little angry too.
She spoke in a concealed calm manner. "Well,Sirius. If you really want to know, why don't you boys all come along with me to my knitting group tomorrow? Im sure you could learn a lot about sitting still and being calm!"
All of the boys sighed. Tomorrow was going to be the most boring day of their lives.
