missed the train for you

Summary:

Lily finds Mary laying in the grass, and decides to join her.

Or;

two girls who love each other talking under the stars

Notes:

welcome to my first post! I came across this (unfinished) in my notes and decided to finish it up, even though I haven't touched this fandom in a year or two. Kinda miss it ngl but I don't miss the depression--anyway, I needed some good quality girl time with all the mlm ships I've been seeing lately

Hope you enjoy reading about two of my favourite girls :)

Work Text:

Mary rolled over and focused her gaze on the sky, not seeming bothered in the slightest by damp grass brushing her cheeks. Stars could be seen in her eyes before they fluttered shut.

“You know,” she began, startling Lily back to the present, “it’s more comfortable down here than most seem to think.”

“Hm, I’ll bet,” Lily said as she settled next to her. She crossed her legs and leaned back on two cool hands, letting dirt settle between her fingertips.

The girls let silence rest between them, neither feeling the urge to rush back to reality. It was Mary who spoke next, and Lily immediately wanted to run from what was sure to come.

“What are you doing out here, anyway?”

Lily let out a sad laugh, not much more than a breath passing shaky lips.

“What, can’t a girl just go for a stroll?”

“Oh, sure, a girl can.” Mary tilted her chin just enough to face Lily properly, one eye squinting up at her while the other remained closed. “Though, it is a bit worrying when said stroll happens mid-December and this girl has a train to catch within the hour.”

Lily sighed as she lowered herself to even ground with Mary, who was back to admiring the sky above.

“I just… I can’t stop thinking about it, y’know?

“Hm.” Mary paused for a moment. “What, exactly, is it that’s on your mind?”

Simultaneously, both girls tilted heads to face one another, and Lily was thrown months back in time. All the bad thoughts slowed down as she allowed herself to admire Mary’s beauty, from the curls atop her head to the soft lines shaping her chin.

“You know…” Lily started, feeling Mary’s breath hit the tip of her nose, spreading like fire across her cheeks. Deja vu. “It is pretty comfortable down here.”

“Lily…” What are you doing here?

“No, I know, just–” A deep sigh, shifting to look away from the girl making her head spin. It’s not like her face wasn't already ingrained in Lily’s mind anyway. “Just give me a minute, yeah?”

“You only have a few left until you miss that train.”

“Would it be the worst thing if I did?”

There was a long pause between them, before Mary breathed a soft oh.

More silence.

Hands rest side by side.

More waiting.

Pinkies intertwine.

More hoping.

Palms rest against one another.

Hoping things will be okay for them.

Hands grip each other tight.

Things will be okay for them.
