The basements, the subway lines, the abandoned train tracks beneath the city, they kept him out of the sun. Kept him away from everyone.
At night, he'd come up to ground-level. Rats swarm through alleys, looking for trash. He'd hear voices -- Spanish, not the Yiddish and Italian from the last time he prowled this city -- as he fed on vermin.
Something in him -- some thing in him -- was hungry for more.
He needed to eat. He stayed close to rats. The rats needed to eat. They stayed close to people.
And that ... thing inside him, it howled.
