Work Text:

A man’s salt and pepper hair reflects how seasoned he is at heart. Aoko’s remark brightens Nakamori Ginzou’s mood, helping him forget how his body’s grown old without considering the age inside his head.

“How is home?” Aoko asks.

“Quiet. You know how Kuroba moved out.”

“Aoko thinks you’re glad she lost interest in that loser.”

“I’m your father,” he shakes his head, their relationship its own punctuation mark. “Your father misses you, Aoko, college or not.”

“Let’s see the dinosaur exhibition next time.” Her words fall quick and fast. “Aoko won’t leave you. Kaito’s the one who’s learned from his family how to not be around for the people he loves.”

Three hours later, ten kilometres away, Kaito watches an application loading on his laptop. At last the screen changes, connecting him to Nakamori Ginzou’s cellphone.

In a well-stocked bathroom, Kaito unhooks his bra strap. Pieces of Aoko return to storage cases.

There’s almost as many parts to the disguise as the unidentified body sent by KID’s enemies.

The dinosaur exhibition is new to the Nakamoris, but Kaito’s seen it in another museum, scoping out leads in London. Even then, he’d recognised it was Aoko’s kind of exhibit. She’d play coy, forget to tease him, eager to surprise him with the giant replica of an ancient fish which had gone extinct over a hundred million years ago.

Kaito imagines Aoko grinning at him near an imitation coral reef, and he subconsciously shapes the muscles in his face until it’s a perfect match.

“I missed when you used to smile, Aoko,” Ginzou’s voice comes suddenly.

Aoko waves her father close. Their selfie is saved like fossils in the Cloud.

That evening, Kaito finds Ginzou has set it as his wallpaper. He sinks into the chair behind his laptop, thinking, Back to work, and spins around, facing a mosaic of clippings, maps, and print-outs on his wall.

Kaitou KID avenged his father’s killers, and now he’s avenging Aoko’s.

“She would have wanted to grow old with you,” he says. “I’ll make sure you don’t miss her, Inspector.”

The evidence cannot answer.
