“... Jacks. ” The name said in a mixture of a sigh and a huff of laughter.
“What?” The man in question replied, the singular word dripping with feigned innocence.
“Don’t you think this is too much?” Evangeline laughed, placing her book face-down on her chest.
In response, Jacks leaned further into her. His face hovered above hers; he was knelt beside her, who laid on the chaise. His forearm rested by her head, supporting his weight.
“Staring at you? No, it’s never too much,” Jacks teased, just to see her lovely cheeks pinken. She was the most fun to tease, after all.
“Scoundrel.” She muttered, trying to hide her smile. Failing. She sank deeper into the chaise, as if to hide. He followed her.
“Stop! I’m trying to read!” She giggled again, and in that moment he knew that that was the sound that would greet him if he ever entered heaven.
He frowned. She wasn’t tricked. “But I’m trying to look at you.”
“You already know what I look like.”
“It’s never enough.”
Her face really reddened then. She brought the book up to hide her face. He just as easily pulled it down with his free hand, making sure to slot his index finger and imbue a little magic to mark the page. Heaven knew his Little Fox would kill him if he made her lose her page.
Ignoring her protests, he set the book aside, then promptly went back to gazing at her, just to see her squirm.
“You drive me crazy.” She muttered.
“Good. So you know what you do to me.”
Her narrowed gaze dropped to his lips. He didn’t miss it.
The corner of his lips tugged upwards. “Did you want something, Little Fox?”
“I think you want something. You stopped me from reading!”
“Perhaps we want the same thing, Little Fox.”
“You want it more than me.”
“Is that so?” Maybe I should just leave you here then. His voice taunted in her mind.
It would be your loss.
A standstill. Evangeline was stubborn in love. Jacks was dominating. Both made strong forces in this game between lovers.
“You win this time, Little Fox.” He whispered, finally capturing her lips with his own.
