Work Text:
Today was the day, the day that Shohei Fukunaga would become a big time chef, how did he get to that point? Yamamoto Taketora, Fukunaga's best friend and crush since their first year of high school. Fukunaga had always wondered how lucky he was to have a friend like Yamamoto, he was loud and explosive like a bomb but he was always very caring, he could tell when he or their other friend Kenma Kozume had something wrong.
Fukunaga shook his head and chuckled at the thoughts that clouded in his mind. He needed to get ready, It was about 6:30 on a Friday, which meant he had to be at work a bit sooner since it was always busy on Fridays. As he changed into a nice black turtle neck shirt and some gray drag-on jeans a knock on the door could be heard. "Come in," Fukunaga said while fixing his shirt and turning to look at who was coming through the door, soon a male with flat mohawk walks in with a sleepy smile on his face. "Hey, Sho are you going to work soon?" He asked to which the short black haired male gave a nod with a smile. "Yes, do you need something while I'm out?" Fukunaga asked.
Yamamoto opened his mouth before closing it and walked over to the shorter male before hugging him softly before pulling away and then walking away. "Just a little hug, now get going before you're late for work Sho." Yamamoto said as he closed the door and left Fukunaga to his thoughts. His cheeks lit up a bright pink as he grabbed his things and made his way out of his room and down to the front door. "See you when I come back Tora!" He softly shouted to which a slight 'okay' was heard from upstairs. He smiled and shook his head as he then left, his legs guiding his way all the way to his family owned restaurant.

Fukunaga was walking home when he got a text from Kenma, a friend of his. What could Kenma need? He thought as he opened up his phone and soon looked at the messages with a smile that slowly threatened to faultier off of the man's face. The message read:
Kenma!
Hey, Fuks I know I haven't been in touch with you for a while but there's something I need you to know. Yamamoto and Tanaka are dating, Tora wanted me to tell you since he's out right now buying things. Sorry again, I know how long you've loved him for but you need to give up on him now, it would be good for you.
Fukunaga's brain didn't register the tears of his that fell down from his eyes as he walked and put his phone away. His mind was going insane with thoughts that shouldn't be in a person's head at the moment. "Why didn't Tora tell me? Why does he always leave me in his shadow like this.." He muttered to himself and rubbed away his own tears, he looked pathetic crying over a man who has probably been dating someone for years. This wasn't right, how could he have high hopes of actually dating Tora? It didn't matter.
As it seemed like hours Fukunaga reached his home and stepped into his home while taking off his shoes to then leave them by the front door on the mat as he went straight to the bathroom and locked the door as he looked at himself in the mirror. He looked like he was crying for hours, his eyes were all puffy and red as there was dried tear streaks down his cheeks. He took in a deep breath and slapped himself in the face. "You're an idiot! Shohei! You're an idiot!" He shouted at himself through the mirror as he then rolled up his sleeves and grabbed his razor to which he then dragged it across his arm in the symbol of a big X. "Look at you, how could you be so pathetic.. So damn pathetic.." As he was saying those words he started to cry more before he slid down from off the counter and down onto the floor, his arm was leaking with blood like crazy as he cried.
Fukunaga doesn't remember blacking out, but once his eyes opened it seemed like he was in a either an all white room or in a hospital. But it didn't look like anything Fukunaga thought a hospital room would look like. He slowly sat up and looked around, the room was lightly dimmed and there was no one but him in the room, when he got out of the bed his arm started to sting more as he moved around. He winced and looked down at his arm to reveal his patched up arm with a bunch of words on it.
Wake up Fukunaga
As on command Fukunaga gasped and woke up. The room he was in was the bathroom, he couldn't tell what time it was or how long he was there on the floor for. But all he did for the moments he sat there for was look up at the ceiling before then noticing all the blood that pooled out from his arm. He jumped a bit before finding some bandages and quickly patching up his arm and the started to clean up his puddle of blood.
After he was all done he walked out of the bathroom to see Yamamoto on the phone as he carried a suitcase down the stairs. Soon the other male turned to Fukunaga and stopped what he was doing. "Ryu, I'll call you back later." He said before hanging up his call and putting his phone in his pocket. "Hey Sho, how was work?" He asked to which Fukunaga turned away from the other male and walked off to his room.
Yamamoto's mouth opened as he tried to reach out to Fukunaga before the short haired male disappeared off into his room. He sighed and rubbed his head, he knew this news wouldn't come easy to Fukunaga since he did housed him for a while but it was time to go to someone who he loved. It wasn't like he wasn't going to miss being in Tokyo with Fukunaga but it was just that he didn't love him as he did in high school. He would miss the hell out of Fukunaga, but not as much as he would if he'd left in their high school years. He shook his head, maybe Fukunaga was just jealous of how well he had a relationship, yeah that was it, he was just jealous.
Saturday, the day Yamamoto Taketora walks out of my life for good. Fukunaga stood still as Yamamoto packed the rest of his bags and put them by the front door. "I'm sorry Sho, it's not anything about you but Ryu has a place for me and him." He said softly while hugging the other. "I'll miss you so much," he told the shorter male to which he gave a nod. "Do you want me to help you load up your car?" He asked Yamamoto who just shook his head and let go of Fukunaga and took his suitcases down to the car before closing the front door with a slight wave. A few minutes later, a car could be heard speeding off which was the sign to Fukunaga that his life was coming down to it's end.
He fell down onto his knees and sobbed loudly into his hands, just like that his reason for living had just packed his things and left him like he was nothing. How could Yamamoto just leave with no sort of remorse for how Fukunaga felt about it. That just set Fukunaga off, he stood up still crying and started to take down all the photos of Yamamoto and put them all into a big box, soon he started to put all the things that reminded him of Tora into the box.

It's been a week since Tora had left the house but Fukunaga couldn't shake the feeling of him still being there. Some nights he'd have dreams of a shadowy version of Yamamoto that taunted him about how he had lost his reasons to live, it was giving him options and ways of how he should kill himself. It was insane, it was making him lose his mind. He stopped going out to his work place because the shadow told him to. The shadow was like a shield to Fukunaga but it stopped him from doing a lot of things, many times he thought he saw the shadow outside of his dreams made him crazier.
Fukunaga had been trying not to sleep this night so he went to watch tv to which he saw Yamamoto- no the shadow of Yamamoto laughing at the screen before turning to Fukunaga with a frown on his face. "Hm, Shohei, you're still alive? I have gave you so many options but whatever, it's come for you sooner or later." The shadow said before chuckling and disappearing. Fukunaga's heart rate started to race as his head started to pound, he couldn't feel his legs and his arms but he could see himself walking to his room and digging into his closet to the find himself with a large noose and a pill bottle in his hand. Before he did anything else he started to write something on a piece of paper before then setting up the noose and throwing the pill bottle against the wall when his hands were too shaky to open it. Soon he put the noose around his neck and then kicked the chair out from below him. He gagged and choked around as he whispered some words before soon going limp.
Kenma had been worried about how Fukunaga was doing for weeks now once he stopped answering his calls or texts so he went down to the black haired male's house but once he got there the door was cracked open. That sight scared him a bit as he pushed the door open more to reveal a living room that had been turned upside down. everything impacted but this box that Kenma could assume was all the photos of Yamamoto since there was a photo sticking out from it. But that wasn't the point, as Kenma searched all of the first floor he went up to Fukunaga's room to which the sight had made him gasp loudly. There, in the middle of the room was Fukunaga's lifeless body, hanging from a noose that hung from post in the ceiling. Soon Kenma had called the cops and they had found Fukunaga's little slip note. They handed it to Kenma and he started to slowly cry as he read it to himself.
When you took it all you forgot
Your shadow, Tora, your shadow...
