Chapter 1: A normal night. I hope.

Chapter Text

Reni Brekker.

She was an interesting girl, only fifteen, but scarred and tired. Her upbeat facade was kept up though, the people she cared about desperately needed a little 'ray of sunshine' friend and she was determined to be just that. No matter how broken she really was. Only a few times the nightmares really got to her. Images of a young Kaz staring wide-eyed at Jordie's body, the cold of the sea, the rotting smell of reaper's barge, they only haunted her at night -sleep was a rarity- but she got by. Today was like any other, colleting debts and giving a good beating to those who can't pay. Reni did feel bad, but this was survival. There isn't time to pity some poor sob who couldn't pay on time. She was *the* Kaz Brekker's sister, after all. They expected her to be as ruthless and cunning as her brother. She was heading back to the Slat, wrapping her bruised knuckles in bandages, when-
"What the hell?"
Reni immediately spun around, seeing a few Dime Lion thugs standing behind her.
"Shit."
Reni sneered at them, putting a hand to a small pistol strapped to her hip. She was always more of a fist type of lady, though.
"What business?"
The night was bound to end in violence.

Chapter 2: A normal night. (Baz Krekker edition)

Chapter Text

Kaz Brekker.

Kaz was tired. That was the usual, but now especially. His little sister, Reni, was out longer than usual and Kaz was having none of it. Who does that child think she is, keeping him waiting like this? Kaz sighs and finishes tallying up the Crow Club's profit for the night. It'll be dawn soon, where the hell is she?! Kaz's mind started wandering, it couldn't be helped, he was a man on edge. He started assuming the worst, though it was highly unlikely. She was probably just off beating some client who's severely in debt. Or she was beating someone for fun, one could never tell with that girl. As much as Kaz hated to admit it, he was worried. Ha! The bastard of the barrel, coldest snake in Ketterdam, *worried*? And about a fifteen year old at that! It was laughable, really. Kaz still couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong though.

He stands up, ignoring the screaming in his leg, and makes his slow, painful descent down three flights of stairs. Once Kaz finally gets to the bottom floor of the Slat, he takes a look around. Everyone is either passed out or incredibly hung over. Seems like the party last night didn't do them any well. Kaz gives a few hungover Dregs a good glare, that should straighten them up. He briskly opens the door and walks out of the Slat, his cane lightly thudding against the ground as he walks.
"Saints, where is that girl?" His muttering came out in a frosty white breath that contrasted the dark, damp street.

He can't help but feel that something has gone very, very wrong.

Chapter 3: Shit.

Notes:

TW!!!! Blood and gore and (kinda) suicidal thoughts!!!!

Chapter Text

Fuck.

Reni drifts somewhere between consciousness and pure oblivion, and she'd be damned if she passed out before getting back to the Slat. Dragging her bloody, broken body through alley after alley, she curses the Dime Lions.
"Fucking cowards."
She held her own against the bruisers from Pekka's crew as long as she could, but in the end she was still a fifteen year old girl. A broken, lonely little girl. Pain shoots up her left leg as she drags herself through a dirty back alley, her leg was at a gruesome angle and the pain was so consistent that she had almost gotten used to it. Fucking hell, what did those Dime Lion grunts do to her anyway? Reni lets out a giggle as she mutters to herself.
"I guess Kaz and I will be matching from now on."
She pauses, holy fucking shit, the pain is making her delirious. Did she actually just *giggle* after getting her ass handed to her? With a quick shake of her head she keeps moving, half crawling-half dragging herself through the streets. Thank the Saints it's dawn, everyone was either minding their own business, not bothering to notice the corpse of a girl, or was passed out from whatever escapades they had the night before. Reni sees the Slat in the distance and relief pours through her, ice cold water over the heat of her pain and fear.
"Finally. Home."
The girl had been running on pure spite and adrenaline, the sight of the crooked ugly house provided her with an indescribable comfort, but her energy was running out. It was still a good fifty meters away and Reni could feel herself losing blood, adrenaline, and her will by the second. Reni was broken, bloody, on the brink of death and ready to give in. The ice cold of the sea, the smell of rotting bodies, it all came flooding back to her. Maybe death was a better choice than this. All hope seemed lost, Reni was prepared to go give the grim reaper a handshake, and she saw him. Right before everything went black, one blurry, grey figure in the distance made it all worth it.

"Kaz."

Chapter 4: Saints

Chapter Text

Kaz felt nauseous. The all-too familiar feeling creeped up his throat, threatening to make him vomit.
"No."
His rock-salt rasp was barely a whisper. Though selfish, he silently prayed to whatever bastard of a Saint that no one was around to see this. To see the infamous Dirtyhands break down. His sister's bloodied body lay before him, and he was back. Back on that damned barge, and through some sick, twisted way, he knew she was there too. It takes everything he has, but Kaz manages a step forward, another step, a third. And soon, his cane is bashing against the ground as he fully sprints to where his sister lay. Ignoring his throbbing leg, he kneels beside her body, stifling a gag. He had seen bodies before, gruesome, rotting, bloodied but seeing his sister like that sent him reeling. No, he'd already lost one sibling, he'd be damned if he lost another. Kaz put two gloved fingers to her wrist, feeling her pulse. A flood of relief rushed through him as he felt steady heartbeat.
"Rotty, Pim, get over here!" He yelled behind his shoulder.
The two Dregs came running and seemed to flinch when they saw the siblings. One disheveled and panting, the other walking the brink of death.
