A Warm Welcome

Summary:

Wednesday is back after being on a trip for work

Work Text:

Wednesday was barely in through the door when she was ambushed.

“Mama!” Dean cried, hurling himself at her. Wednesday had to let go of her suitcase handle so she could grab him and stabilize them both.

“Yes, hello, Dean,” Wednesday said. Dean was jumping, hoping she’d pick him up. She obliged him, grunting with how heavy he’d become. Immediately, he wrapped his small arms around her neck, happily hugging her.

She’d been gone for a week and a half, away on a trip after being instructed by her boss to go a few states away where either suspect had committed two more murders. Dean had missed her immensely; he’d been unhappy when he found out she was going and by the morning of her departure, he’d held her by the leg in the hopes that she wouldn’t go. Tyler had to pull him away, making sure to hold on tight so he wouldn’t escape and try again.

During her trip, Tyler would call in the evenings, and so she would speak to Dean before it was time for him to g o to bed. It seemed to help a bit, him hearing her voice. She was told many, many details during each phone call until Tyler would instruct him to go and take a bath.

“Missed you,” he mumbled.

“I missed you too,” it never occurred to Wednesday how she might feel hugging her child after time apart. She didn’t think it would matter much to her, but being here  now made her rethink things. “Did you behave for your father?”

Uh-huh! ” He pulled away from her neck, and started to chatter. “Guess what? Guess what? Me and Daddy went to the park and saw ducks and geese and I tried to catch one but Daddy said no and-”

Wednesday placed one hand over his mouth. She was far too tired to listen to him talk a mile a minute right now. Dean thought this was very funny and giggled. “Wait until I’ve had a proper rest before you tell me everything, Little Bat.”

The plane ride left her jet lagged. Before they even took off, there’d been a six hour delay, this was after she and the colleague, who’d accompanied her on this trip, woke up early to make it to the airport on time. All day she’d been yearning to get back home so she could lay in bed, rather unproductive of her but she needed a way to recuperate from this long day.

“Hey,” Tyler came around the corner, breaking out into a wide smile at the sight of her. “I thought I heard Dean talking.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. He could have been talking to himself,” Wednesday accepted a kiss from him, allowing him to hold her- his head on the top of hers.

They would have kissed again, but Dean was trying to push them away, which made Tyler laugh.

“Eww,” their son declared.

“I don't have to wonder where he got that from,” Tyler teased her.

Wednesday huffed, adjusting her hold on Dean. Now that he was getting older, there was a reason he was picked up less. “Dean, I'm going to put you down.”

He protested all the way. “No! I wanna hug!”

“But you’re getting a bit big, Buddy,” Tyler said, trying to placate him. Dean struck his lower lip out, pouting.

“Come here, Dean,” Wednesday motioned him to follow her to the living room. “Sit with me on the couch.”

Honestly, she didn’t particularly feel like climbing up those stairs to get to her and Tyler’s bedroom. She’d just stay down here for the time being and rest for a few minutes.

“Okay!” Dean agreed easily. “Daddy, can you get the card for Mama?”

“What's the magic word?” Tyler smirked.

Pleaseee ?” Dean begged.

Tyler ruffled his hair. “Alright.”

“There's a card?” Wednesday said.

“Uh-huh!” Dean said enthusiastically.

“Dean wanted you to have something when you came back,” Tyler said over his shoulder as he went to retrieve the aforementioned item.

Wednesday closed her eyes as soon as her body hit the soft couch cushions. It felt very nice to be here like this and not back in those stiff airport chairs.

Dean wasted no time in climbing into her lap for proper cuddles. Wednesday didn't try to move him. She laid back while he made himself comfortable. He would be clingy for a couple of days, accumulating to her being back.  He was making up for lost time, all curled up and holding one of her braids in his grasp. Her hair had been a source of comfort for Dean since he was very young.

“Are you gonna leave again?” Dean suddenly peeked up at her, chewing on his lip.

“No, Little Bat,” she assured him. “I'm staying right here.”

“I've got it,” Tyler returned with a folded piece of black construction paper. He noticed their positioning and smiled warmly at the sight, taking a seat on the arm of the couch.

Wednesday took it from him. There were little drawings that were clearly done by Dean, including one that she interpreted as her arresting somebody.

“That's you,” Dean pointed, “catching the bad guy!”

“I see,” she noted.

“And that’s you choking the bad guy!” Dean said with a big grin. “And there’s Daddy making you coffee, and Nimbus sleeping and me helping you catch a bad guy!” He peered at her with big, hopeful eyes. “Do you like it?”

“It is very thoughtful,” she said. “Thank you.”

Dean beamed. “I...I told Daddy he had to keep it a secret.”

Though she couldn’t see it, Tyler nodded seriously. “He made me swear I wouldn’t tell you.”

“So it would be a surprise!” Dean exclaimed. “Was it a surprise?”

“It was,” Wednesday confirmed. Their son was very pleased to hear this.

Distantly, they all heard a heaving noise.

“Nimbus!” Dean gasped and ran out there. Seconds later, he announced, “Nimbus got sick!”

“Then I suggest one of you clean it up,” Wednesday changed her positioning now that Dean was off of her.

Tyler decided to poke his head out in the hallway. “I don’t know about that, Wen.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Wednesday was instantly annoyed by his cryptic  tone.

“Looks like Nimbus left a little Surprise of his own on your suitcase.”
