Work Text:

Realizing Brownie wasn’t dead was like having a zombie walk into your house casually and pretend it isn’t dead. She’s debating on whether or not that is the case since Meat Boy and Brownie have been catching up as if it never happened. They seemed like they were having fun, minus having to ruin some cloth so Brownie wouldn’t ruin some of the furniture. Despite being made out of literal fecal matter, Brownie was somewhat polite? You’d think someone made less than a year ago wouldn’t know much about how to act, but he seems to be doing just fine. He’s also been getting better on speech! He used to be worse at it. She would complain over him being able to sit on one of the chairs since they could break (it took a while to D.I.Y for goodness sake!), but Meat Boy seemed happy. She didn’t want to be a buzzkill.

So here the three sat, Bandage Girl sitting at their little Wooden table while Meat Boy and Brownie have been talking for hours. She quietly sipped on tea while they spoke.

“I can’t believe we didn’t find you sooner!” Meat Boy chirps, gesturing with happiness, “You were basically right there for who knows HOW long.”

“Yeah! Yeah…” Brownie nods very exaggerated. “Very happy! Two good friends!” His voice sounded croaked and a little drowned out, but he sounded happy to be there. To Bandage Girl, she was surprised the two were THIS happy. It was as if they were long-time friends, and that was a shocker for her. They’ve only met twice, and yet they’re so buddy-buddy. She was honestly jealous of how fast the two even got along, even technically when they first met. She couldn’t deny, though, Meat Boy was a sweetheart. Of course he’d make a friend within five-ten minutes as soon as the two meet! That’s how he got her, anyways. If only she could have that skill. One could dream.

There was a bit of silence after a while. She was snapped right out of her thoughts. She didn’t notice she was absentmindedly staring at the inside of the tea cup, it being half full. She blinked towards the two as they both stared at her. Meat Boy raised a brow.

“You doing okay there, hun?” He shuffled his body in his wooden chair. She glanced up at him.

“Yeah. I’m alright.” She gave him a small smile. Brownie was looking down at his own little tea cup after glancing at hers.

“Sorry we’ve been blabbering.” He scratched the back of his head. “I don’t think you’ve two really talked, have you?” He shot a glance at the both of them individually. She didn’t realize they’d put a full focus on her after a few hours. About time? Maybe. Did she have anything to say? Not really. She didn’t really know anything they had in common either. She just kept giving a small smile.

“Nope, I don’t think we have.” She widened her smile. Meat Boy squinted at her before Brownie pointed at her tea cup.

“Yours not leaking?” He asked with a concerned look. She gave a puzzled face back to him.

“‘Leak’? What do you mean leak?” She raises an eyebrow before hearing a small little drip. She leaned forward to listen better as she heard another. Brownie raised his cup, showing a small crack on the side. The entire bottom was nearly snapped off.

“Eesh! What happened to it??” Meat Boy stood up, walking over to get a better look.

“Don’t know! It just break when hold! Not sure how…” He looked genuinely confused on how the cup wasn’t holding the tea inside. Meat Boy sighed, taking the teacup from him.

“Well, there’s an extra in the Kitchen. I’ll just go get you another!” He grinned. “Just make sure you’re more careful, alright?”

Brownie only nods with a smile. Meat Boy walks around the table, slipping towards Bandage Girl. “Be right back!” He hums, setting a kiss onto her cheek as he walks over to the Kitchen.

Now it was just her and Brownie.

She awkwardly fiddled with her teacup while Brownie just looked around. Every time he gave things just one glance, he always had some type of mesmerized look. Bandage Girl was the one that did all the decor, so she was kind of glad someone besides Meat Boy found it nice. For a house done with wood and cotton, along with bandages as filler, don’t ask, she was content.

Brownie continued to glance about until his body didn’t turn awkwardly to not acknowledge the weird silence they were having. It was going on for longer than she thought it would. She leaned back, trying to see what he was even looking at until she noticed the small blanket hanging on one of the drawers in the hallway (how did they even manage to make that? Loaddss and loads of attempts at carving (and splinters)). She could obviously tell he took interest in it, so she might as well say something now.

“That’s one of my favorites.” She managed to catch him off-guard as he stared at her blankly. She got up, walking over to the drawer and set it over her arm. The fabric was soft and fluffy, patterns with flowers and rabbits were covered all over it. She walked over to him so he could get a better look. She shifted it to be held in both her arms, holding it out.

“What’s that?” He squinted at it confused.

“It’s a cover!” She hummed. “It’s something you cover yourself with. Hence, uh, cover!”

He creaked forward in his chair, leaning on it in curiosity as he looked at the cover. His eyes were literally gleaming at the damn thing. She hesitated in her speech. Before she could really fill up the silence again, he hummed wheezily.

“Nice..” He grinned, his yellow corn teeth were beaming. She smiled back. He still backed up from it, keeping a distance. He straightened himself onto the chair and shook his head as he snapped himself out of the trance. “Don’t want to break.” He simply stated, waving it away from him. She looked confused again. It took her a minute to realize he didn’t want to rip it to shreds or crack it somehow. She obviously knew there were ways that wouldn’t let that happen, and you can’t even crack covers, she’d know since she made it herself, but she hesitated. She swallowed heavily. She didn’t really want to do this, but she felt like the poor guy had to at least have something that won’t break in his hands. He just doesn’t know his own strength sometimes.

“It won’t break if you just. Touch it.” She replied after a moment. She held it out more slowly, setting it right in front of him. “Just put your hand over it and see how it feels. It won’t break at all, guarantee you on that!”

Brownie hesitates himself. He shakily put out a hand, and set it on the cover lightly. He pressed very carefully incase anything could happen. Nothing did. His face lit up almost immediately. Despite not doing any damage to it, he still pet the cover very softly.

“So fluffy! Warm!” He chirped, he was grinning so wide. Her smile widened from the sight. He focused back on her instead of the cover.

“Did you make?” Brownie was leaning excitedly on the chair, waiting for an answer. He was still petting the cover.

“Yeah! I did!” She chuckles. “It was a bit tedious, but I’d say it was worth it.”

“Very.” He gives another exaggerated nod again. “Is there more?”

“Well, yea, but I might have to dig them out.” She set a hand on her chin. “They’re kind of lodged in the closet.”

“Don’t know what is, but please show when can! Is awesome!” He gives her a thumbs up.

“Will do!” She grins, giving a thumbs up right back at him. She thought it’d be awkward, or worse, leads nowhere and it ended there. Ironically, she was happy with talking with him. They found somewhat common ground, but she might need to teach him it. She didn’t really mind, though. As long as things aren’t quiet and weird, that’s fine with her. It’s better than silence snd not knowing him at all

As if it were on cue, Meat Boy came back out of the Kitchen.

“Sorry, there were no more teacups. Apparently there was just three… my bad, but I have this mug—“ He pauses at the two and immediately grins. He sets a mug for Brownie on the table filled with more tea. “I’m guessing you were showing him the blankets?”

“Only this one.” She replies. “I might have to go get the others.”

“Oh, right! We can go do that right now if you want.” He motions to the closet not too far off the hallway.

“Eh, sure. I don’t mind.” She shrugs.

“Would love to see!” Brownie grins, the wooden chair creaking at this point because he won’t stop leaning on it.

“Alright!” Meat Boy’s grin widens before he takes a look at the cover. It fades a bit. “Ah, baby… maayybbee we should give Brownie something for his hands before we do that?”

“Hm? What do you—“ Bandage Girl pauses at the sight of a brown stain on the cover. Her face drops into a blank stare at the spot. Brownie fiddles with his fingers, oblivious to the small mistake until now.

“…Oops.”

Notes:

I like to think Brownie silently communicates like in-game, and doesn’t know speech well. his voice probably sounds like a person who smokes 50 cigarettes at once. He gets better the more he talks with Meat Boy and Bandage Girl me thinks,,
