Eye Smiles

Summary:

Taking Jimin dress shopping might turn out to be more useful than you'd think.

Work Text:

“Would you stop goofing around?” You rolled your eyes as Jimin disappeared amongst the racks of clothing again, inspiring a loud groan from yourself. Normally you wouldn’t rely on Jimin to come on a shopping trip with you, but considering your best friend was still a little too busy getting all tangled up with Hoseok (you didn’t even want to think about what those two were probably doing all alone at the apartment), you didn’t really have many other options. “Jimin, I swear to god – we came here just to find a dress, and so far you are doing anything but…” You trailed off, realizing you had no idea where the red-haired boy had gone. “… And I’ve lost him,” you muttered to yourself, finally deciding he was going to be of no use and that you were better off just working on your own.

All you wanted was a dress for New Year’s – Suga had offered to open up his apartment to you all for the celebration (he insisted it would be the last time for the coming year, which you all knew was a lie), you hadn’t been shopping in a long time, and all you’d wanted was to find a pretty dress. Except then your friend ditched, now you were here with Jimin and while he was supposed to be helping you out, instead he was just… Being Jimin and disappearing, reappearing only at the most inconvenient times in order to take crappy pictures of you.

It took you another twenty minutes of going through the racks (silently cursing Jimin the entire time for ever agreeing to come on this shopping trip with you) before you finally picked out four dresses that you were pleased with. “I don’t know where you are you loser, but I’m trying on dresses!” you called out, ignoring the chuckles of the sales clerk who opened up the dressing room for you.

“Lost boyfriend?” she teased, and you quickly shuffled into the small space before she could say another word, your cheeks having turned a faint pink color. Your relationship with Jimin was… Complicated to say the least. Ever since he’d strolled into town with that cocky smirk (or his deceivingly innocent eye smile), you two had been drawn to each other like magnets… Except these two magnets were kinda broken. Whereas Hoseok and Y/F/N had just avoided the facts for as long as they could, you two were well aware of your conflicting feelings. It just always seemed that when you two were ready to finally make that commitment, someone would back down, wouldn’t be ready, would claim feelings for someone else. It had nearly ended your friendship a couple times, but somehow you two always fell back together.

Today wasn’t the day to start another one of those fights, you told yourself as you wrestled yourself into the first dress, frowning as you looked yourself over in the mirror. It was too loose in the wrong places, too tight in even worse places, and you shook your head, slipping it back down over your frame. The next dress was just a hideous color – while it had looked nice on the rack, it just did not suit your skin tone, and you let out an annoyed sigh as you pulled the dress down, placing it on the ‘no good’ hook. The next two weren’t any better – weird sequins had you scratching at your arms on the third, the fourth… Well, considering you could barely pull it up over your thighs, there was no point in even trying. Tugging your sweatshirt back over your head, you unlocked the door, ready to give up on this trip altogether – and then you found yourself face to face with Jimin, his face half hidden by a large furry coat. Your eyes met, and even though you couldn’t see his mouth, you knew from the squint of his eyes that he was grinning. “What’s got you all smiley…” you mumbled, arms crossed over your chest as you leaned against the doorframe of the dressing room, trying your hardest not to smile in return.

Rather than answering you with his words, he pushed something into your hands. You looked down, eyes wide as you took in the black, slinky material that was now between your fingers. “Nuh-uh – no way, do you see this thing, Jimin?” you asked, frowning as you held it up, letting it fall so you could see the whole dress in all its… Shimmery… Shiny glory. It was stunning, you had to give him credit for that. It almost reminded you of starlight, the way its glitter seemed to shift as the material swayed. “This dress is probably…” Your words died in your throat as you met his eyes again, swallowing hard. He raised his eyebrows, pointing for you to head straight back into the room. You nodded slowly, about to turn – then paused, your own eyes scanning over the giant coat he’d clothed himself in. “… Where did you even find that?” you asked, just barely managing to hold back a chuckle.

“Like it?” he asked, spinning around eagerly, the coat flapping around his sides. “It’s big and fluffy and it’s sooooo warm.” You rolled your eyes, closing the door in his face, ignoring his whine of annoyance as you repeated the motions of trying on the dress… And watching your jaw drop as you stared at yourself in the mirror. The dress seemed to cling to you in all the right places, and the color brought out a sparkle in your eyes that you had never seen before. “So – how does it look?” Jimin’s tone was a little more serious – the length of time you were taking in that room had him a little worried that maybe he’d screwed up royally. It was only once the door opened that his eyes widened, his smile reappearing instantaneously.

“Teach me your magical dress picking ways,” you insisted, spinning around once in the dress for him, your eyes meeting once again as you stopped. The dress stopped at mid-thigh, fluttered about your frame perfectly, and emphasized the good points of your body that you didn’t even know you had. Your grin was permanently fastened to your face, and Jimin was pretty sure that the magic was in your eyes rather than in his dress choices. Stepping forward without a word, his hands suddenly grabbed your cheeks, and you found yourself frozen, not sure how to react.

“You’re gonna get it. Yes?” You nodded slowly, noting the determined look in his eyes, and even though you weren’t sure what exactly had changed between you in these brief moments of eye contact, it was almost as though you could feel the pieces of some years-long puzzle finally falling into place.

“Holy shit, Y/N, you look hot!” You could hear the shriek from across the room, and you rolled your eyes, raising your beer bottle at your tipsy friend, quickly turning your expression to Hoseok, mouthing ‘look after her’. He nodded, his gentle grasp on her going tighter, and you smiled – thank god Jimin had gotten them together. And speaking of the devil… You glanced around the room, searching for the bright red hair, finally noticing him out on the fire escape out back. Making your way through the party goers, you climbed out the back window to join him, slinging an arm around his neck and kissing the top of his head.

“Y/F/N approves of the dress,” you mumbled against his hair, earning a small laugh from him as he tilted his head back to look up at you. “I mean – not that that’s all that important.” He rolled his eyes, his hand reaching up to gently grasp your cheek, his thumb running across your skin.

“It isn’t, cause you’re beautiful regardless of what anyone else thinks. Not to say that Y/F/N would disagree with me, but – I’m just making it clear.” You laughed softly, moving around the boy so you could sit yourself on his knee, his arm winding loosely around your waist. You sighed softly, looking out into the bright lights of the city before finally turning your attention to the boy you were sitting on.

“Any New Year’s resolutions?” you asked, handing him your bottle of beer so he could take a sip. He made a face after taking a swig, shaking his head at the taste.

“Resolution number one – teach Yoongi that just because the beer is cheap, doesn’t mean he should buy it.” You raised the bottle in agreement to that, but proceeded to take another swig because it was New Year’s and you felt like it. “Resolution number two… Be a better boyfriend.” You couldn’t help but smirk at those words, glancing down at him.

“Have I ever told you how much I love it when you use that word?” you murmured, leaning in and grasping his chin, pulling his lips up to yours. You were pretty sure he murmured a response of ‘oh yeah’, but it was distorted by your mouths moving together. The weeks between that purchase and this moment had admittedly been rough, but you two were still learning. You were used to games, to teasing – it would take time to adjust to steadfastness, to speaking your minds. But love? That was a sentiment you both knew well, and between the two of you, you wouldn’t let it die.
