Work Text:

The morning sun streamed through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow on the worn wooden floor. The scent of freshly brewed coffee hung in the air, mingling with the faint aroma of lemon. Laura and Cora stood near the kitchen island, identical grins on their faces. Derek, her somewhat grumpy brother, leaned against the countertop and eyed them suspiciously.

"So, Derek," Laura said, crossing her arms in front of her chest, "we have a challenge for you." Derek raised an eyebrow. "What kind of challenge?" Cora stepped away from the fridge, her expression mischievous. "A fun one. Are you in?" Derek's gaze traveled back and forth between his sisters. "That depends. What's the catch?" Laura's grin widened. "You have to eat those lemons. All of them. No twitching, no complaints."

"Lemons?" Derek snorted. "Seriously?" "And that's not all," Cora added. "After you've mastered the sour, you have to kiss Uncle Peter." Derek choked on his coffee. "What? Why?" "Tradition, Derek," said Laura. "'Family bonding. Besides, it's probably going to be hilarious." Derek stared at her. "You two are crazy." "Cora shook her head. "Not crazy, just creative. So, do we have a deal?"

Derek looked at the lemons. "All right, then. But only if you do the same." "Agreed," Laura agreed. "We'll each eat a lemon and then all line up for Uncle Peter." Cora winked. "And if he survives the sour attack, maybe he'll finally smile." Derek grumbled. "I don't know why I'm doing this to myself for you guys." "Because we're your sisters," Laura said. "And we know how to make life interesting."

Cora added, "Besides, it's not every day you get to challenge your broody older brother." Derek took a deep breath. "Okay, let's get this over with." "On three," Laura said. "One... Two..." "Three," they all finished together. Together they bit into the lemons, their faces contorted by sourness. Derek's eyes watered, but he didn't give up. "And now the kiss?" Cora asked, wiping her mouth. "Right," said Derek. "Let's find Uncle Peter."

They found Peter in the living room of their newly renovated house, where he was sitting in his favorite armchair, engrossed in a thick book. His brown hair framed a face that had seen too much, but his deep ocean blue eyes still sparkled with mischief. " So what's this about?" asked Peter, looking up. "Family bonding, Uncle Peter," said Laura. "Derek's about to kiss you."

Peter raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah?" Derek leaned forward, his lips brushing Peter's cheek. "Just close your eyes and think about something less sour." He then kissed him gently. Derek didn't know what he had expected Peter's lips to taste like, but he was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. "That was unexpected." Said Peter with a deadpan expression on his face.

His nephew cleared his throat briefly before turning back to his sisters. "Yeah, well," Derek said, wiping his mouth, "I survived the lemons. This one was a piece of cake compared to that." Cora snapped a picture. "Priceless." Laura giggled. "And now we have another photographic evidence of the infamous Hale challenges that I can file with our other evidence photos."

"These kids are definitely crazy," Peter said, grinning slightly after getting a kiss on the cheeks from his two nieces. "But we're family," Derek said. "And family sticks together, even when things get sour."
