What could she give to someone who had everything?
Mafuyu did not attach much importance to festivities between couples because she was busy with the affairs of the royal guard. She only received gifts from single women and men kindly. But now she has a wife. A woman she loved and wanted to make her happy every day of her life. She gave her several objects considered ideal for ladies, but Ena did not seem so excited when she held them in her hand. She showed more excitement when Mafuyu kissed her than at the expensive bijouterie stored in her wardrobe.
Her wife was a mermaid. A creature belonging to the rulers of the ocean, owners of everything in the world. Their treasures surpassed human quality. The most conclusive proof was the mirror that accompanied Mafuyu everywhere. This object allowed her to observe others or to communicate if the other person was near another mirror. For Valentine's Day, Ena gave her scales from her tail to improve her sword which became capable of cutting steel. Everything her wife gave her had some everyday use, even that painting she made of the two of them that hung in the dining room of their home, Mafuyu was just copying the gestures of the other couples.
"How about giving her something that reminds her of home?" Kanade nodded at Mizuki's suggestion who started sketching something in her notebook.
She wandered around the shopping district for several hours. She checked out all the shops and talked to all kinds of merchants, but she couldn't find something enough for Ena. She felt frustrated. Kanade noticed this during the meeting and waited until the end to ask her about the problem. That's why the three of them were sitting at the usual table drinking tea while looking for a solution. Mizuki was the one who came up with more solutions that were rejected because Mafuyu felt they were not enough.
"I don't know much about mermaids, but if you buy a bathtub of her size so she can feel comfortable being at home. It's been a while since she's used her tail, right?" Mafuyu nodded interested, "It's time to spoil your wife, besides, she surely didn't expect such a gift. You'll kill two birds with one stone."
"The whole point of a gift is to surprise."
"That's why! It's also to show your interest in the other person. If you didn't have that interest, you wouldn't even have got married."
"That doesn't make sense."
Accepting Mizuki's suggestion, she looked for the one who could have a large-sized bathtub. Two months have passed since their marriage and one since they started living together in Mafuyu's house. Adventures happened, but in order to take his wife home she had to get a trident as well as several treasures coveted by pirates. Everything was hidden in her basement. Ena, thanks to the help of a sea witch and the trident she got, managed to have legs for an unlimited period of time. She spent most of her time in an empty room which she took to concentrate on her paintings. A passion she couldn't enjoy in the ocean because of her difficulties.
She imagined Ena enjoying the bathtub with her tail wagging back and forth showing her excitement. It was perfect. She just had to find a way to get Ena out of her house to surprise her on White Day. Mizuki helped by taking her to the castle with the excuse that she needed company during her surveillance rounds or to pass the time in her free time. There was only one day left to surprise her and Mafuyu was walking home to check that everything was finished to perfection, but she stopped in front of a street shop.
She had found the perfect gift.
"It's a thousand times more comfortable than the last one!" Ena lay down inside the empty bathtub with a feline smile full of enthusiasm. "I feel like a high society lady. Oh! Let's be able to bathe together now. Thank you so much, Fuyu, I love the gift."
She sat up to pull Mafuyu's face close for a kiss. She smiled with red ears and she kissed her repeatedly.
"Actually, that's not your gift. At first I thought it would be more appropriate, but I found something you'll like better." She looked curiously at the bag she pulled behind her back and handed it to her.
"How cute!"
Marshmallows shaped like kittens. That was the gift she thought appropriate for someone who enjoyed cute things. Ena kissed her again, thanking her for the gift.
"The man said they go well with hot chocolate or coffee. Do you want to try them now?"
"I want hot chocolate. I'm tired of drinking coffee every night to keep me awake." She made a new one of disgust that made her laugh.
"Don't overexert yourself and remember to take care of yourself, Ena. I'll go make the chocolate." Mafuyu moved Ena's fringes so she could kiss her forehead. "Bring the kittens when everything is ready."
The only thing she could give to someone who had everything was the love she felt for her.
