As soon as it strikes 9 a.m, Jaehyun gets out of his car and into the bakery to grab the birthday cake that he ordered for his birthday boy, Mark. He went up the counter, excited to see how it turned out. Jaehyun tells the cashier his name before waiting for the baker to grab the birthday cake and hopes that the cake will turn out alright.
See, Mark’s a perfectionist, and every year for Jaehyun’s birthday, Mark had always made sure that everything would be perfect for Jaehyun. He’d plan Jaehyun’s birthday months before; he’d book the cake, send out the RSVPs to their friends and buy him his perfect birthday present. Every detail of his celebration always had something that he knew Jaehyun would absolutely adore.
Mark’s endless efforts and attention to detail had always made Jaehyun fall deeper and deeper for his amazing boyfriend. It never fails to amaze Jaehyun how well Mark knew him and exactly what he liked. He always wanted to show Mark that he knew him just as well and return the favour for his birthday celebrations.
Jaehyun knows that Mark hates surprises, so he told Mark last year that they should have a celebration for his birthday with his friends as well, invite all of them over, and just have a chill time together. However, Mark wasn’t quite fond of the idea and said that he would prefer it if it was just them.
He held Jaehyun’s hand when he asked, looked him in the eyes and said, “I don’t need a party or fancy dinner, Hyunnie. If my friends want to celebrate too, we could always go to lunch together but other than that, being with you is all I want, really.”
Mark’s words had been playing in Jaehyun’s days after that and he thought that; if being together is something that Mark wanted for his birthday then he would do everything in his power to make it a perfect day for them.
Jaehyun snaps out of his thoughts when he hears the cashier calling for his name, looking up at the girl standing in front of him with the cake in hand. The moment he saw the cake, Jaehyun felt instantly dizzy.
“Uh, is that my boyfriend’s cake?” Jaehyun asked, looking at the cashier with a confused look.
“Yes… Is there something wrong, sir?”
“Yes. I asked for pastel green. This is as neon as the colour green could possibly be.” Jaehyun lets out a sigh, his disappointed and frustrated gaze now stuck on the cake.
Jaehyun looked up at the cashier again, rubbing his forehead and letting out another sigh before he asked again, “Can you get this fixed?”
“Uhm yes but it’d be ready in two hours instead now. We’ll fix it as fast as possible.”
Jaehyun sighs and nods, showing the girl the type of pastel green that he wanted the cake to be before he leaves the bakery with heavy steps and sighs.
Jaehyun just shakes his head to get rid of the disappointment and drives back home, wanting to execute his other plans for his little Mark that he will make sure works out.

Jaehyun is in the kitchen, cooking Mark’s favourite breakfast menu: scrambled egg, homemade english muffin, sausage, and bacon, with hot chocolate on the side to wash it all down.
Jaehyun plates the food as pretty as he can, making it look like a personal chef had created and plated it. He’s very satisfied with his work, smiling to himself and humming a soft tune while cleaning up the kitchen.
Jaehyun thinks that the day is going to be fine after all; the cake is going to get fixed, the gifts are all wrapped up, and breakfast is made and served. All he needs to do now is wake Mark up from his sleep, so he turns around but the sight he sees in front of him makes his heart stop.
Jaehyun’s eyes are stuck on their cat, Bobby, sitting on the stool, reaching over and eating the scrambled egg and bacon that he had prepared for Mark. To make things even worse, Bobby starts licking up everything on the plate as well, as if he was marking his territory, making sure that the food is all his.
Jaehyun could only stand there, watching the food that he made Mark getting eaten by their devil of a child. They both know Bobby is a menacing cat but he wasn’t expecting him to eat all the food on Mark’s plate.
Bobby only ever strictly eats expensive cat food and occasionally the expensive fish leftovers that his parents cook for their own dinner. So he definitely thinks that Bobby targeted him by eating Mark’s breakfast.
Jaehyun just sighs while getting the plate off the counter and onto the floor, letting Bobby eat the rest of it but after a few more bites, his loving devil child decides that it’s enough for him and leaves.
Jaehyun takes a few deep breaths while he stands there, looking down at the half eaten breakfast, picking the plate back up to throw the leftover into the bin. Right when Jaehyun goes back to the stove to cook the second batch of Mark’s breakfast, he hears footsteps walking towards the kitchen that makes him pout.
Jaehyun is just a tad bit disappointed that the breakfast won’t longer be a surprise, but he has to prepare the food in front of Mark instead which doesn’t have to be a bad thing because Mark had said before that he finds Jaehyun attractive in the kitchen.
So Jaehyun finds his new motivation and doesn’t give up just yet, quickly taking the ingredients from the refrigerator, ready to make another batch of breakfast for Mark. He brings the ingredients back to the counter, smiling softly while he cooks as he hears the familiar footsteps of his boyfriend entering the kitchen.
Jaehyun feels a pair of arms around his waist and Mark’s face planted into his back, whining softly against his skin, a habit that Mark does when he wants to complain about something. He knows whatever that comes out of Mark’s mouth would make him adore his boyfriend even more.
“What is it, baby?” Jaehyun asks, waiting to hear what his boyfriend will complain about even though he thinks he already knows what Mark will say.
“You weren’t in bed when I woke up. What’s up with that?” Mark says in a soft whine.
Jaehyun just laughs because his thoughts were right, his Mark always loves waking up with Jaehyun by his side.
Jaehyun likes to wake up early to get his day started; he works out, cleans Bobby’s litter box and gives him his breakfast, makes himself coffee and checks his schedule for the day. However, no matter how long he has woken up, he will always go back to bed, not to fall asleep again but just to be there when Mark wakes up.
That has always been their routine and if Jaehyun ever wakes up and does not go back to bed to Mark, he’d have a sulky boyfriend that would require so many kisses to make him feel better.
“Sorry, pretty boy. I was making breakfast for you, but…” Jaehyun stops his words, turns off the stove that he uses to cook the scrambled eggs and turns around to look at Mark, arms wrapped around his waist.
“Our devil of a child ate half of your eggs and bacon. So I’m cooking a second batch now.” Jaehyun says; his words making Mark laugh and shake his head.
Jaehyun stares at Mark, looking at all of his features and admiring his beauty before leaning in to press a soft kiss on his lips which earns a little surprise squeal from his boyfriend.
Jaehyun pulls away from Mark and pats his cheek. “Now do me a favour and keep our child supervised while I get this done.

After feeding Mark the second batch of breakfast he made and discreetly calling the bakery to get Mark’s cake delivered, Jaehyun prepares a bath for the both of them to enjoy.
Jaehyun gets the bath filled up with warm water that he knows Mark would love and throws in a lavender bath bomb and some lavender flowers as well. He tries his very best to make the bath perfect for Mark before he goes and fetches his boyfriend.
Jaehyun walks out of the bathroom and walks over to Mark who is on his phone, cupping his face in between his fingers and lifting his chin up to look at him with a smile.
“Happy birthday, my birthday boy.” Jaehyun says with a smile that has Mark rolling his eyes but Jaehyun can still see the blush creeping on his pretty cheeks.
“You already said that, honey but thank you.” Mark replies, standing up and taking Jaehyun’s hand in his and squeezing it gently.
“I just wanna say it so many times today that you’ll get tired of me.” Jaehyun guides Mark into the bathroom and to the bathtub.
“That’s impossible, I won’t ever get tired of you,” Mark says, looking at Jaehyun before his eyes shift to the tub and a soft smile appears on his lips.
Mark turns back to Jaehyun and wraps his arms around him and pulls him close, pressing a kiss on his cheeks, “Thank you, baby. I love it.”
Jaehyun pulls away slightly to press a short kiss on Mark’s lips, his lips lingering on Mark’s a little longer and goes in for another kiss, getting a pleased sigh from Mark that makes him feel warm. Jaehyun’s about to move his hand up to Mark’s covered hips when they both get interrupted by the sound of his phone going off from the bedroom, making Jaehyun sigh in disappointment while Mark laughs it off and caresses Jaehyun’s hair.
“Get in the bath, love. I’ll see what it is.” Jaehyun says, even though he can guess that it would probably be the delivery person for the cake.
Jaehyun goes to the room to get his phone, pouting to himself from having to be apart from Mark for even one minute. He takes his phone and picks up the call, and sure enough the delivery guy is at their door.

After getting the cake, Jaehyun goes back to the bathroom and turns on some music, letting Laufey’s Bewitched (their song that Mark loves to put on before they go to sleep at night) play on repeat in the background. He slips into the bath with Mark, wrapping his arms around his waist and starts pressing soft kisses on his wet shoulder which has Mark smiling and running his fingers into Jaehyun’s locks.
“My boyfriend is so clingy today.” Mark says, turning around to look at Jaehyun with a soft but teasing smile.
Jaehyun leans in and steals an opportunity to kiss Mark’s lips, a soft and long one this time that has Mark leaning in for more, so Jaehyun pulls Mark’s back closer to his chest.
Mark pulls away from the kiss to catch his breath which has Jaehyun whining, chasing for Mark’s lips again, “Hey, I want more, Markie.”
Mark sticks his tongue out at Jaehyun and shakes his head, patting his cheeks gently and giggling at Jaehyun’s protest, “I just wanted to say thank you for everything that you planned today. Being with you just like this feels nice.”
“I mean, it really isn’t a perfect day, y’know? Like I got a few disappointments but I’m glad you like it.” Jaehyun returns Mark’s smile, leaning in to press a kiss on his cheek.
“I don’t need it to be perfect, Jae, I just need to be with you, okay? So despite knowing that you were probably stressed out with whatever that went wrong, you’re doing great and you being here and pampering me like this is more than enough, okay?” Mark asks, looking at Jaehyun with a raised brow.
Jaeyun just pouts at him and lets out a soft groan, hiding his face on Mark’s shoulder because his boyfriend knows him so well, knows that he was stressed out and knows that he wants everything to be perfect.
Jaehyun hears Mark’s pretty laugh, feeling his boyfriend’s finger poke his cheek, so he looks up at him with the pout still on his lips.
“Okay?” Mark asks again and Jaehyun nods this time.
Jaehyun sighs and trusts that Mark will love anything they do and Jaehyun feels the same, so that’s enough for him.

After their bath, Jaehyun orders lunch for them, too relaxed and clingy to cook. He will cook their dinner anyway, so he might as well relax with Mark and Bobby.
Jaehyun had put on all of the High School Musical movies while they ate their lunch, enjoying the food, the movie and each other’s company. Mark seemed so relaxed and happy that Jaehyun didn’t mind that the food was a little too spicy for them and they had to keep refilling up their waters.
Jaehyun watches as Mark sings along with one of the songs in the third movie with Bobby snuggled up on his lap. Jaehyun leans over to press a kiss on Mark’s cheeks, taking all the cutlery and dirty take out containers off the table to the kitchen and putting it all in the sink, planning to do the dishes when he cooks later.
Jaehyun goes to the guest room and takes a paper bag filled with boxes of gifts and tries his best to hide it from Mark’s eyes and he succeeds due to the fact that Mark is too focused on the movie.
He places the paper bag on the kitchen counter, takes out the cake from the refrigerator and places numbers 2 and 5 candles on the cake, lighting up the candle. The cake looks better now with the pastel green cream instead of the neo green cream.
Jaehyun brings the bag in one hand while his other hand holds the cake, “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to my Markie. Happy birthday to you.”
When Jaehyun starts to sing the song, Mark turns to look at him with wide and tearful eyes as he stands up and helps Jaehyun to put the cake on the table, the paper bag on the floor.
“Oh baby, this is so much. Thank you, thank you so much. I love you.” Mark says, wrapping his arms around Jaehyun’s neck and pulling him close to his chest, Jaehyun rubs his back to calm Mark’s small sobs down.
“I love you too, baby.” Jaehyun pulls away from the hug and presses a few kisses on Mark’s face until his boyfriend is a giggling mess.
Jaehyun lets go of Mark and lets him cut the cake but takes the slice and feeds it to Mark, watching as he hums happily at the taste.
“Do you like it? They made it neon green this morning, so I got frustrated with them and told them to fix it.” Jaehyun’s words with his deadpan expression have Mark laughing loudly and shaking his head.
“I love it, baby but if it was neon green, it would be awesome too.” Mark says and Jaehyun just rolls his eyes at his boyfriend’s teasing words.
They eat more slices of cake while Mark pulls the paper bag to himself and looks inside to see two wrapped big boxes and one wrapped medium sized one. Jaehyun watches Mark’s eyes widen with excitement and takes out the medium one out first, unwrapping the first gift and gasping when he sees the Tiffany blue coloured box.
“Honey? Jung Jaehyun?” Mark lets out a soft scream while he opens the box, covering his mouth when he sees the silver necklace with the heart pendant that Jaehyun knows he always wanted.
Mark turns to look at Jaehyun who is already smiling at him, taking the box and taking the necklace out, “Come here, baby.”
Mark has his hand covering his mouth and leaning in close to Jaehyun while he helps put the necklace around his neck, pressing a kiss on his forehead when their faces are inches apart.
Jaehyun pulls away and caresses his hair, “Check the back, baby.”
Mark wipes his eyes and sniffles, taking the heart pendant in his fingers and turns it around, his eyes turning soft when he sees Jaehyun’s name engraved on it and pressing his thumb on the engravement, bringing it to his heart and pressing it against it.
“I love you, Jung Jaehyun. As long as there’s you and me, nothing else matters.” Mark looks up at Jaehyun with glassy eyes, the pendant still pressed against his chest.
In a few years, when they stand at the altar, Jaehyun will repeat those words in his vows as a promise that he will love and hold Mark for the rest of their lives, as long as it’s them. But for now, Jaehyun’s proud to call the boy in his arms his boyfriend while he holds Mark close and calms him down.
Mark pulls away after a while and starts to unwrap his two other gifts, one of them being the Simone Rocha ballerina sneakers that has been in Mark’s wishlist ever since they were released. Mark’s other gift is also something that has been in the cart for months but he hadn’t checked out, a big black backpack from his favourite local brand that he planned to use for work.
Both of Mark’s gifts have him squealing in excitement and jumping to hug Jaehyun, squeezing the daylights out of him until they both fall onto the floor, laughing loudly together.
Jaehyun’s happy that Mark loves the gifts and so happy to see the way he reacts and how content Mark is with everything he has prepared. Mark is elated that his boyfriend knows him so well that he knows just what he wants for his birthday from his breakfast to his gifts.
They were both distracted by being in each other’s embrace and hadn’t noticed that Bobby had been licking the cream of the leftover cake still on the table. They’ll panic later and Google if frosting is safe for cats, but for now, they’re in their own bliss in each other's arms, breathing in each other’s air and thanking God for the love they have.

Jaehyun walks into their bedroom later that night after he has done all the dishes from both lunch and dinner. Jaehyun smiles when he sees Mark sitting on bed, toying with the new necklace that he gave him while scrolling on his phone.
Jaehyun slips into the bed, wrapping his arms around Mark’s waist and looks up at him with a soft smile. “Hi baby. Happy 25th birthday again.”
Mark turns to look at Jaehyun and smiles, laying down on the bed and leans in to press a kiss on his lips. Mark opens his spotify, clicking their shared playlist and putting Laufey’s Bewitched on repeat.
The dreamy intro plays, Jaehyun stares into Mark’s eyes and brings him closer into his arms, kissing his lips as Mark whispers another ‘thank you’ and ‘I love you’ against his lips.
While they fall asleep in each other’s arms that night while listening to Laufey’s soft and gentle voice, Jaehyun thinks that as long as there’s them, nothing else matters.
