Work Text:

Hizashi nodded to himself, satisfied with everything that was currently sitting in his cart. He had a week till his boyfriend's birthday and he was sure to get everything to make Shouta's day the best it could be.

After paying for everything and packing it into his Mustang, all he had to do was drop everything at Nemuri’s place to not spoil the surprise.

The week passed quickly and before Hizashi knew it, it was Sunday and that meant the birthday of the love of his life.

Despite usually sleeping in on Sundays, he woke up half an hour early and left the bed quietly, although not without some protests from still half-asleep Shouta. He quietly prepared the breakfast - pancakes with fresh fruit and whipped cream, orange juice and coffee they kept for special occasions, and crept back to their bedroom just in time to see Shouta rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

“Good morning, my sweet Prince,” Hizashi said softly and was rewarded with Shouta’s sleepy smile. The blond set the tray on the bedside table and kissed Shouta tenderly. “Happy birthday, baby,” he whispered when they parted and Shouta's eyes widened comically.

“You forgot again, didn't you,” Hizashi sighed with faux-exasperation.

“I was busy,” Shouta protested and it wasn't a lie. The past 72 hours he spent on stakeout and only came home the evening prior. Hizashi ran fingers through the black hair.

“I know, babe. But I hope you have energy for some celebration,” Hizashi said with a smile and set the tray in his boyfriend's lap. “Dig in, we're going out today!”

Shouta looked miserable at the news. “Can't we stay in?” He asked as he started cutting the pancakes.

“Don't worry, you'll like it,” Hizashi reassured him with a wink. “And then we can chill with some take out.”

Shouta hummed in agreement that quickly turned into a pleased moan when he took the first bite of the breakfast. Satisfied, Hizashi settled himself next to his boyfriend and started gently scratching his back. Shouta closed his eyes and Hizashi was certain that if he could, he'd be purring right now.

After the breakfast, Hizashi prepared Shouta a nice bath with bubbles, keen on making the day as pleasant for his boyfriend as possible. Shouta, surprisingly, let himself be doted on and was soaking up the attention like a sponge. It only told Hizashi how tired he must be after the stakeout, as usually the man put up even a little bit of fight before allowing himself the rest he so deserved.

Around noon, they were both ready to depart, both wearing the most comfortable clothes in their wardrobe.

“Are you going to tell me where are we going?” Shouta asked, eyeing the outfits suspiciously. They definitely weren’t fancy-date clothes.

“Nope,” Hizashi replied, popping his p . “A surprise!”

Shouta sighed but followed Hizashi to the car without more questions.

Their destination was thirty minutes by car and soon they were parking in front of…

“A shelter?” Shouta asked when he noticed the sign.

“Mmm. Happy birthday,” Hizashi confirmed and leaned to plant a kiss on Shouta’s cheek.

An understanding dawned on the man. “Hizashi, are we…?”

“We sure are! No go inside and pick us a fluffy friend,” Hizashi said with a wink. Shouta quickly unbuckled the belt and rushed into the building. Hizashi trailed after him with a laugh.

“Welcome! How can I help you today?” A girl at the reception greeted them.

“I’ve made an appointment for today,” Hizashi said as he came up to the desk. “It should be under Yamada, I’ve sent all the paperwork.”

The girl clicked something on the screen of her computer. “That’s right! Right this way.” She led them to a feline’s room, where no less than ten cats were playing around.

Shouta looked like he wanted to melt into a puddle at the sight.

“They’re all healthy and had their shots,” the girl explained. “If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me.” With that, she went back to her desk.

Hizashi opened his mouth to encourage Shouta to choose one but his boyfriend was already on his knees, extending his hand to curious cats.

“They’re all so pretty, Zashi,” he whispered, admiring a tabby that was rubbing its head against his fingers.

Hizashi carefully sat down next to him, his heart swelling with affection. “I know babe, but only one, ok?”

Shouta pouted but it was quickly replaced by a warm smile as more cats surrounded them.

They played with the kitties for some time, when Shouta noticed a calico sitting in the corner, eyeing the intruders suspiciously. Its’ body language was screaming discomfort.

“How about this one?” Shouta asked quietly, pointing to the cat. Hizashi’s eyes followed.

“Oh. Doesn’t seem friendly.”

“Exactly. The chances it gets adopted are miniscule.”

Hizashi immediately understood Shouta’s train of thought and he felt his love for the man. He was willing to give up the cuddles to give the cat the home it deserves.

“Ok, babe,” he said, kissing Shouta’s cheek and standing up to grab the girl. He explained to her on the way which cat they were settled on.

“Oh! That’s Yoko! She’s been here for the past two years and no one was interested in her but she isn’t the most social. Are you sure?”

Shouta perked up. “Yoko? That’s perfect,” he said. “We’ll have two suns in the house,” he whispered, his gaze full of affection and love when he looked at the blond. Hizashi’s heart stuttered. Eight years together, and the man was still doing this to him.

“I guess we can’t leave her, then,” Hizashi chuckled and nodded to the girl. “We’ll take her.”

The girl visibly brightened up. “Thank you so much! Should we finish the paperwork?”

Shouta stood up and followed the girl to finish the procedure while Hizashi ran to the car to take out the carrier from the truck. Soon enough, they were in the car, Shouta sitting in the back with the carrier with the newest addition to their little family.

“Thank you so much, Hizashi,” he whispered, voice cracking at the end. Hizashi shook his head. “Anything for you, Kitten, you know that.”

When they parked outside the apartment building, Shouta gingerly took out the carrier and followed Hizashi to their flat. The man went inside and quickly stepped to the side, to allow Shouta a good look at their living room.

While they were out, Nemuri brought all the stuff Hizashi bought a week prior and set it out according to the instructions. Now, in the corner next to the window stood a cat tree, there was a box with the cat toys by the tv stand and a cat bed by the sofa.

“Hizashi,” Shouta said, his voice wavering.

“Happy birthday, baby,” Hizashi whispered and kissed Shouta sweetly.
