The sound of thunder echoes through your room as you lay curled up in bed. You’ve never been one for severe thunderstorms.
It isn’t so much the rain and thunder, it’s what it can bring with it. Hail, high winds, flooding, and tornadoes. Getting the tornado watch notification was enough for your anxiety to spike.
It’s grown dark outside now and you tried to get sleep to no avail.
Then you start to hear the undeniable sound of hail pinging against the window. The weather channel said up to golf ball size. It sounds more like pea size but that doesn’t mean they can’t get bigger and cause damage.
Lightning flashes quickly, illuminating your room. You’d get up to close the blinds but you’d rather stay in bed.
You grab your stuffed animal and hold it close, mumbling to the spirits and Satan for the storm to stop soon.
There’s a soft knock at the door that you initially mistake as thunder. You’re too worried to think it’s anything else.
Then your phone buzzes with a notification. When you look at it you see a text from Copia.
“Are you in your room?”
“Yes?” you reply back.
“Want to let me in?”
You’ve been friends with him since you joined the ministry. You met him on the first day and he’s the one who helped you adjust to life here. Things have flowed from there, creating a friendship and a bond you’ve never had with anyone before.
“You have a key” you respond back. You gave it to him after a few months. You feel safe around him and he’s the one you trust the most in your life. It felt right.
A few moments later your door opens and he’s stepping through the doorway.
“Sorry. You know I don’t like to just barge in” he jokes as he closes the door. “You doing ok?”
“Ehh” you respond, forcing yourself to sit up. You don’t exactly want him to see you like this. He’s seen you in worse situations but being afraid of something so stupid isn’t something you want him to see.
“I know you don’t storms. You don’t have to lie” he replies sternly, crossing his arms.
“Fine. I’m freaking out a little” you admit softly.
“It’s ok. Everyone has fears” he smiles. “I wanted to check on you. I knew the tornado watch alone probably has you on edge.”
“The hail isn’t helping” you reply.
“Hmm” he hums looking around your room before going over to the window and closing the blinds. You reach over to turn on the light next to your bed so it isn’t as dark.
“Let’s not think about it. Where’s your computer?” He asks.
“In the bag under my desk” you say.
You watch as he finds it and pulls it out. He plugs in the charging cord before signaling he wants to sit next to you on the bed. You nod your head yes before scooting over to make room for him. As soon as he’s seated, you curl into his side.
The hail has subsided but the thunder still booms.
“What do you want to watch?” he asks as he opens the computer and starts it up. Simultaneously he puts his arm around you, holding you close.
“I don’t care” you sigh.
“Is there a new show by that name?” he jokes.
“Please just pick something” you chuckle softly.
“The big bang theory? Something light and funny to distract you” he asks.
You nod before resting your head on his shoulder.
Suddenly there’s a loud boom and you can’t help but to tense up.
“It’s ok” he says calmly. “It’ll pass soon. The weather people just say the extreme to help cover their butts. We’re fine. You’re fine. You’re safe.”
You don’t respond as he clicks play on an episode. You try to focus on the show and what he said.
Him being here helps a lot. At least if something happens he’s here.
His hand moves slowly up and down your arm, trying to help calm you. You can’t help but notice the fresh smell of his shirt mixed with his cologne. It smells like him and it’s comforting.
However, the return of hail pelting off your window brings back your anxiety.
You can’t help but to curl further into him, your hand grabbing at the fabric over his stomach. His other hand comes up and rests over it.
“It’ll stop soon. Focus on the show. Nothing is gonna happen” he soothes.
You nod your head, trying to focus on the show. Your heart races in your chest as you try to calm down. Nothing will happen. Nothing will happen, you repeat in your head.
Soon the hail stops again and you finally start to relax again. The thunder and lightning eventually subsides as well and all that’s left is the sound of rain falling softly.
To your surprise you start to worry that he’ll leave now the storm seems to have passed. You start to think if you can stay awake, he’ll stay.
Your yawn gives you away though.
“It’s way past your bedtime, isn’t it” he laughs, knowing you like your sleep.
“And the storm has deprived me of sleep” you chuckle in response.
“Uhh, I guess I should probably go then” he sighs, sounding a bit disappointed.
He closes up the computer as there’s a soft rumble of thunder.
“Or you can stay” you rush. Something about that rumble felt oddly coincidental. Silently you thank the spirits and Satan for giving him a reason to stay other than you not wanting him to go.
“Or I can stay” he agrees before moving the computer to the floor.
When he sits back up, his lips find yours. It’s soft and cautious.
“Sorry. I’m sorry” he says, pulling away quickly.
You’re surprised but definitely not upset.
“It just felt like a good time. I mean, I know you’re stressed about the storm, but I…I don’t know. That’s not much of an excuse. I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok. Just do it again” you smile and he quickly leans back in.
His hand comes up your face as your hand finds his waist. When his tongue tries to dip into your mouth you pull away, not quite ready to go further.
He lets out a soft whine as your hand comes up to his chest. His eyes flick down to it before looking back to you.
There’s another clap of thunder but this time it’s easier to stay calm. He’s here with you. You’re safe and it’s going to be ok.
