Chapter 1: The End & The Beginning

Chapter Text

"Kat! Hurry up, we have to go find good seats." Kaiya Hamada yelled to her sister, Katsumi, who was lagging behind.
"Geez, Kaia, relax, the teams haven't even started warming up yet," Katsumi said as the two girls made their way past the volleyball court, where the teams were warming up for their games. The girls made their way to the staircase leading up to the seating area. Kaiya and Katsumi walked down the steps of the upper-level seating area towards the railing, getting a good view of the courts.
Kaiya spotted a group in light green uniforms. "Hey, look, they're here," she said to her sister excitedly, a smile growing on her face.
"SHOYO!" Katsumi yelled down toward the small group of boys. A small boy with orange hair looked up at the sisters and waved to them with a wide, close-eyed smile.
"Hey, Katsumi! Hey, Kaiya!" He shouted; glee crinkling the corners of his eyes. The girls waved back giggling at their small friend. Suddenly a group of much taller boys walked in behind Hinata.
"Hey, that's Kitagawa First. I heard that they have a pretty good setter." Katsumi said as she and Kaiya watched them walk onto the court.
"Hey, Hamada!" a voice yelled from behind the sisters.
Three boys in matching black jackets and pants waved at them.
"Oh hey guys. Are you here to scout out some first years for next year?" Katsumi asked with a smile.
"Yeah. Oh, who's this, Hamada?" the brown haired one asked as the group made their way to the girls and stood next to them at the railing.
"This is my little sister, Kaiya. She's coming to Karasuno next year to play on the girls team. She's an amazing setter, ya know." Katsumi said, pushing Kaiya a little bit in front of her. Kaiya smiled up at the three boys in front of her.
"Well it's nice to meet you Kaiya. I'm Daichi Sawamura." Said the brown haired one with a smile as he held out his hand for Kaiya to shake. "This is Koshi Sugawara." he pointed to the gray haired one with a kind face, to which he held his hand out for Kaiya and shook hands. "And this is Ryunosuke Tanaka."
Kaiya shook his hand as well. "It's nice to meet all of you. Hopefully, I'll see you around school next year," she said with a small smile as the three high school boys smiled back at her.
Katsumi and Kaiya decided to stand with the three boys during the matches. Kitagawa First and Kaiya's school were warming up and doing a few practice plays. Kaiya was watching her friend, Shoyo, when something caught her eye. The setter on Kitagawa First was practicing quick attacks with one of their spikers. He had amazing technique and a lot of speed but as she watched she noticed him get frustrated with his spiker and yell at him. Katsumi noticed her sister watching the tall boy and nudged her, smirking, "He's kinda cute, huh?"
Kaiya pulled her attention away from the setter, "What? Ew, Shoyo is like my brother! You know that!" She said with a scowl on her face.
"I'm not talking about Shoyo. I saw you staring at that setter from Kitagawa First." Katsumi smirked, wiggling her eyebrows.
Kaiya blushed and looked back at the court, "Oh shut up."

The score was 24-8 with Kitagawa First in the lead. Shoyo's team had just gotten a point when Kitagawa's setter started yelling at one of his teammates. Kaiya shook her head looking down at the boy. Now it was Hinata's turn to serve the ball. They sent it over to Kitagawa where they made an error giving a chance ball to Hinata. Hinata's setter went to send the ball but made a miss set. Hinata ran around to the other side where there weren't any blockers. The setter from Kitagawa noticed but it was too late; Hinata hit the ball back over to their side. The ref blew his whistle calling the ball to be out, ending the game.
"Wow, that was amazing." Katsumi said proud of him.
"So that's the King of the court." Sugawara said.
"Yup, he'll be a force to be reckoned with once he gets to high school." Daichi said as he watched the teams bow.
"The short kid seems promising too." Sugawara added before they turned and said their good-byes to Kaiya and Katsumi.
Kaiya and Katsumi walked out of the gym building looking for their orange haired friend.
“So what do you think that whole King of the Court thing Sugawara was talking about was about?” Kaiya asked her sister as the two of them walked around.
“Not sure. First time I’ve heard of it.” Katsumi said shrugging. After walking around they found Hinata at the bottom of the steps, standing in front of the setter from Kitagawa First.
"-So if you want to keep playing, you're going to have to become stronger!" The setter finished harshly. This caused Kaiya to run into view at the top of the steps, and shout.
"Shoyo!" The setter looked up at her, they held eye contact for a few seconds as Kaiya glared at the taller boy as he turned to walk away.
After that day, Katsumi and Kaiya helped Shoyo become better and better over the school year. They ran, practiced and eventually Shoyo and Kaiya graduated middle school together. The first day at Karasuno was intimidating for both of them. Kaiya had gotten to the school early with her sister to meet the girls volleyball club. They greeted Kaiya with open arms and even played a practice game, Kaiya being the setter for one of the teams. The girls were shocked with her level of skills, how quickly she adapted to her new teammates' skill sets and how smooth her quick sets were. Luckily, the girl's setter had just graduated; without a second thought they made Kaiya the first string setter of the girls team.
After getting settled in with the team, Katsumi showed Kaiya around the school and where her classes were. At the end of her tour, Kaiya's phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw it was a message from Shoyo telling her that he just got to the school and was heading to the boys volleyball court. “I’ll meet you there in a bit. I have to take a few things to the clubroom.” and with that the sisters parted.
Kaiya met up with Shoyo right as he slid open the door to go to the gym.
"Hey, Shoyo! Are you ready?" she asked him as they both ran onto the court.
"Heck yeah!" he shouted gleefully before stopping in his tracks, Kaiya peered over his shoulder not knowing why he suddenly stopped.
"WHAT? YOU'RE HERE TOO?!" they both shouted in unison.
