Nui (New-eh) and Streya (Stray-Ah) were a pair of lovers.
Streya of sky and Nui who spent his days down on earth. They loved each other more then anything- unfortunately Streya's father, who was King of the sky/star folk did not approve of their relationship believing that Nui wasn't good enough and had plans to wed Streya off to the Mayuri the Prince of the Moon people.
But they loved each other so that they made plans to every night meet in secret, and to avoid being found out they'd use change into different animals. Such as a pair of doves, a Hart and a Doe, Rabbits, Snakes and so on.
And for a long time they kept things up, but as the eve of her wedding to Mayuri approached the two made new plans to run away together, for she'd happily give up her life in the sky to spend her days with Nui.
Growing suspicious Streya's father watched her and when he caught her heading down to earth he transformed himself into an owl- so as to fly swiftly but silently. When he got down he found the two of them in the form of two cats curled up together. Well this caused him to fly into such a rage that upon her returned he fore bayed her from ever returning to earth and locked in her room.
So on the next night they were to meet he once again took form of an owl and this time found Nui alone in the form of a large serpent. Swooping down he picked up the unsuspecting Nui from the place where he lay in wait for his beloved pulling him high into the sky before dropping him on a large rock killing him instantly.
Upon news of Nui's death Streya wept and wept non stop for many days. Her tears collecting among the stars into a large river in the sky and she cried so much it over flowed and her tears fell to earth creating a brand new river where her Nui lay dead on the ground.
