Work Text:

"In this world there is a phenomenon called soul mates.

Soulmates are something that every person has and connects them to the person who fits them perfectly and will love and cherish them forever.

Everyone is fated to meet their soulmate when the people who are soulmates meet but it is not known when they will meet their soulmate in childhood or perhaps shortly before their own death

However, the fact is that people meet their soulmates without exception.

Soulmates have a so-called soul mark either on their arms or on their chest

The soul mark has been on a person's body since birth and cannot be removed

Soul marks are usually in the form of words or sentences but can also be shapes. The most important thing to know about soul marks is that the same pattern only exists twice in the world.

Soulmates are a blessing for every human being, they work better than any medicine and make the partner feel more comfortable and familiar with their soulmate than with anyone else.

However, if your soulmate is unwell, in danger or showing any other negative emotion, the person automatically feels protective or worried and wants to try to make their soulmate feel comfortable, but these signs only appear when you meet your soulmate.

Isn't that a beautiful concept? Having a person outside who loves you and would do anything for you, don't you think A5158?"

A small child swimming in a tank just stares at the person in front of him and cannot speak or react in any other way.

The man giggles to himself at the reaction and then the man contorts his face into an ugly shape as he grins.

"Oh I'm sorry if I gave you false hope A5158 you see only humans have soulmates but you're just an experiment."

The child didn't react and stared blankly at the man in front of him, which made the man giggle even more.

A small eight-year-old child stood in the middle of a large hole and just stood there, staring blankly around him.

He felt nothing, as if there were no real emotions in the eight-year-old boy's body.

Then the boy blinked, looked around and hobbled on his way with his little legs.

The boy remembered almost nothing, but several phrases had burned themselves into his head, even if the boy didn't know where he had heard them or what they meant.

The boy came across a group of children, they were all weak and so easy to hurt.

The boy knew that he had to protect them, after all, he owed them something, they had helped him.

Something inside the boy told him that this was the first time anyone had helped him.

But that was ok, the boy was strong and could even control the things he touched.

The boy had even been given a name by the group.

They all called him Nakahara Chuuya and the boy really liked this name.

Chuuya learned things quickly, he didn't know why, but he only had to be told things once or twice and he understood them.

Sometimes it was enough for Chuuya to watch people from a distance.

Chuuya was also a very curious child and there was a small place near her called the "library".

Sometimes when Chuuya wasn't with the sheep, he liked to go there and teach himself to read.

The group of children who had saved Chuuya's life was called Sheep.

After Chuuya had learned to read, he read his first book about "soulmates", the word that had been running through his head since Chuuya was eight years old.

When he finished reading the book, he was confused. Chuuya didn't have a soul mark like every other person should have.

Chuuya almost wanted to ask the adults but decided against it when he realized that it would be strange if someone knew that Chuuya didn't have a soulmate.

In the book they said that every human, no matter what kind, always had a soul mark, even the Sheep had some.

One sentence went through Chuuya's mind as he thought about it.

"Oh I'm sorry if I gave you false hope A5158 you see only humans have soulmates but you're just an experiment."

Chuuya was sure he was human! He was just like the other kids!

...No that wasn't true Chuuya was much more emotionless than the other children, Chuuya learned much faster than the other children, Chuuya fought better than the other children, Chuuya didn't have a beautiful smile like the other children and Chuuya didn't have a soul mark like the other children.

Chuuya knew it all the time as he watched the others they looked so much... More human.

Chuuya shook his head quickly. He couldn't think like that, so what if the others could be like that by nature? Chuuya could just copy them and then no one would be able to call him an experiment or not human.

Chuuya had made a name for himself on the streets and had been given the ridiculous name "king of the sheep".

But Chuuya couldn't do anything about it now, it was already too late Chuuya would have to live with it.

Chuuya had better things to do anyway, he had to find out several things about Arahabaki.

Chuuya still remembered how, as an eight-year-old child, he stood in the middle of a hole as the only survivor without a scratch.

Arahabaki is said to have made this hole, but Chuuya was not stupid, he could manipulate gravity so it was not so far-fetched that he could create a black hole.

Chuuya couldn't help but keep going to the library even if he had to do it secretly, he wanted to learn things and enjoy poetry.

Chuuya also wanted to find out who he was before he was eight years old.

Did he have a family? Did he have siblings? A nice older brother? A loving sister? Did he have friends maybe only one best friend? Did he have a cute dog? What was his life like? Had his parents sent him to this horrible place? Did he even have parents? Was he even human?

Chuuya kicked an annoying-looking mafia member against a wall and stared down at him.

The boy was about his age, too self-confident so he definitely had something up his sleeve, looked like someone who thought he was better than everyone else and like someone had taken all his life energy.

Chuuya kept his conclusions in mind and easily slipped into the role of the arrogant gang leader.

Chuuya's goal was simply to ensure that he could be "kidnapped" so that he could seek information about Arahabaki.

And Chuuya's plan actually went as planned, but even Chuuya couldn't have expected to have an annoying mission partner at the end of the day.

Chuuya should have expected Sheep's betrayal, it had been so obvious but he had never thought of it, maybe it was the foolish hope of his eight year old self that the Sheeps would be his lifesavers.

At 15, Chuuya knows that without Chuuya, Sheep would never have come into existence and they would all have died years ago.

So Chuuya decided to join the mafia and leave Sheeps behind, leaving behind his naive hopes of finding someone he could feel comfortable and safe with.

The mission itself was a success Nakahara Chuuya had obtained information about Arahabaki and nothing else was important at the moment.

"Chuuuuuuuuuuya where are you? I beat you honestly and fairly that means you have to be my dog and not just run away from your owner."

Dazai made Chuuya sick and was the only reason why Chuuya sometimes regretted joining the mafia.

Dazai was an asshole, but Chuuya always knew that, especially Dazai's way of talking to Chuuya and Dazai's curiosity got on his nerves.

Chuuya wasn't a damn object or "dog" to possess and especially not because of such a badly manipulated victory by Dazai.

Chuuya let out a defeated sigh as a moment later the door swung open and Dazai entered the door to their shared office.

Chuuya still didn't know why Mori didn't complain about the repair costs they gave him per day or why he had put Chuuya and Dazai in the same office in the first place.

"You, you chibi are finally going to show me your soul mark today, I really want to meet my dog's unhappy partner."

Chuuya was not an emotional person, in fact, Chuuya was sometimes even more unemotional than Dazai, even if nobody would believe him, because Chuuya could adapt well to the role of an angry teenager.

But whenever he saw Dazai, he had the feeling that his emotions were boiling inside him and wanted to strangle Dazai passionately.

Even if it wouldn't do him much good because Dazai is looking for death, he definitely needs a glass of wine along with the flags.

Chuuya slaps Dazai's hands away without looking and looks at him annoyed while Dazai innocently stares at him.

How innocent a teenager can be who shoots at an inanimate corpse and has no respect for death.

"For the last time, damn waste of bandages, I'm not going to show you anything, so please sit down to your report."

Chuuya's voice is an angry hiss that would definitely have affected any resonable person.

Unfortunately for him, Dazai was far from the word reasonable.

"But Chuuya, what's so bad about it? I just want to have a quick look and then I'll leave you alone."

Big words from a hypocrite who hides his soul mark like a obsessed man.

Chuuya types in the last letter, sends it off and stands up.

"Shut the fuck up you idiot, I'll never show it."

Chuuya closes the door behind him and quickly sprints off, not naive enough to believe that Dazai won't come after him.

Chuuya just wants to have a glass of wine with his friends.

"Cheers" says Chuuya as he raises his wine glass next to the Flags' grave.

Chuuya has found out that he is actually human but was used as an experiment.

Chuuya still doesn't feel human with Arahabaki crawling through his blood, Chuuya knew that he would die soon and that his death would be painful.

Corruption will eventually become too much for him and his weak body will become a failed experiment.

"Oi slug you don't look so emotionless it's my job I'm the smart one and you're the force behind my plans without the other we're both useless."

Chuuya looks at Dazai who makes himself comfortable next to a tree.

Chuuya had no strength to put on a mask right now, he would blame it on grief later.

After all, Chuuya's best friends were killed by his brother and he got the confirmation that he will only be remembered as a failed experiment.

Chuuya could never have been so selfish as to talk to his "parents" - they had a good life without him and Chuuya would just be an unwanted parasite.

Dazai frowned as he realized that Chuuya had no intention of responding.

Chuuya saw Dazai approaching but didn't object, watching him from emotionless blue eyes just like his eight-year-old self did.

"Shut up Dazai I don't need you here and above all I don't need to listen to your advice"

Chuuya was just laying out the facts as Chuuya knew he would die from corruption or Arahabaki that was a fact but Dazai was seeking death and was in a much worse position than Chuuya.

In the end, they were still the worst duo in the mafia except that Chuuya had just gotten out of the dance he and Dazai were doing and had no strength left.

"Stupid Chibiko I know exactly what you're thinking "I'm not human" or "I'm just an experiment" or even better "I'm going to die soon anyway" and your stupidity annoys me more than usual you're painfully human Chuuya the whole mafia isn't even remotely as human as you."

Chuuya opens his eyes, even if they are still a little emotionless, you can see the confusion and hesitation in them.

Dazai almost breathes a sigh of relief when he sees that he's on the right track from here on out or he wouldn't see the liveliest dog he knows again.

"I always wanted to see your soulmark and I never thought anything of you not wanting to show it, there was just this one selfish voice inside me that said "what if Chuuya was your soulmate?" And it made sense the day you kicked me against the wall I felt like I could feel my mafia black blood turning a shade of red."

Dazai grabs Chuuya by the chin and looks him close to his face and looks Chuuya in the eye he had taken off the bandage around his eye because he already knew he couldn't talk to Chuuya if he saw Dazai hiding himself.

"You are painfully human Chuuya and I don't care if you have a soul mark or not I will just kill my soulmate."

Dazai presses his lips to Chuuya's even though he hates human contact he feels that he and Chuuya both need this moment of humanity.

Chuuya freezes for a moment but then the will to live returns to him, his blood relaxes and he gently closes his eyes as he softly returns Dazai's kiss.

It wasn't a wild fight or an expression of lust, it was a sign of trust and comfort.

But when Chuuya's car explodes two years later, he knows it was Dazai.

Chuuya looks at the flames and then averts his eyes, feeling the burning in his blood as he walks the streets to his apartment
