Work Text:

Charlotte blinked.

“What are you talking about, Serenity?” She asked, feeling the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Serenity swallowed.

“I’m not from here, Charlotte.”

“Well yeah, I know that–”

“The fort, Charlotte. I’m not from the fort,” Serenity said, her smooth voice soothing her ears. She wished it soothed her anxiety.

“I’m from the outside,” Serenity continued, “I’m from Liberta. Me and my comrades are going back after we take Cain and Sylvia.”

Charlotte’s mouth fell open. She was genuinely baffled – she guessed that Serenity wasn’t native, but she thought she was from a different sector, maybe even the castle. Not from the outside. Not from Liberta.

“Rom– I mean, my comrades aren’t going to be happy because I told you, however, I can talk them into bringing you.”

Charlotte remained silent.

“You’d do great over there– They don’t take too kindly to Avalonians, but I have influence, at least I still hope I do,” Serenity blabbered nervously. Charlotte sighed.

“Serenity, how can I believe you?” Charlotte asked. Serenity paused.

“Have I lied to you before?” Serenity responded.

“I mean, kinda,” Charlotte said, “you know, when you told me you were from the fort.”

Serenity dropped a shade. Charlotte didn’t think that was possible, considering how pale Serenity was. Charlotte reached her arm up, grabbing Serenity’s forearm.

“I’d follow you to the end of the world,” Charlotte said, “you’re my best friend, Serenity.”

Serenity’s skin returned to normal, and Charlotte smiled. Serenity smiled back, but something was off. Charlotte couldn’t place it, but she felt a lingering feeling in her chest, which she couldn't name either.
