Work Text:
The two girls sat in the field of flowers together, one born of an older hare, the other lines of code granted physical form. Both were little girls, allied with opposing sides of a battle that went on for what seemed like forever.
Cream was happy to make a new friend, and was incredibly pleased to realize that Sage, the new girl, was around her age. It would make sense that she would want to be friends because of this. What didn’t make sense, however, was Cream’s willingness to trust someone who allied themselves with Dr Eggman. Not even Sage understood why. Perhaps a child’s innocence knows no boundaries.
“Look, Sage!” She points to the flowers. “Aren’t they pretty? These are called flowers!”
“Yes… I am aware of them. They look… beautiful.” Sage said, a small smile forming on her face.
Cream giggles, her smile almost as bright as the sun. “Can you smell them, Sage?”
“I… do not possess a sense of smell. I apologize, Cream.” Sage said sadly. “I am a being of digital code, rather than carbon, like you. So I do not possess any facilities that you have to feel things such as smell or taste.”
“Oh…” Cream said. “You don’t need to apologize. You can’t help how you were made.” She said, offering a hug to her friend.
“What… are you doing?”
“I want to give you a hug, silly!” Cream said, her face beaming with joy. “It’s what you do with someone you care about.”
“Ah… a hug… like how father does.” Sage opens her arms, only for Cream to wrap hers around Sage and squeeze, Sage following suit.
“Cream… I would like to ask you a question.”
“Of course, Sage!”
“Why do you choose to associate with me? I am the daughter of Dr. Eggman, a man who has caused you, your family and your friends so much harm for years. Logically, you should be sacred of me.”
“Because you’re nice! You helped Mr. Sonic save the world from The End!”
“That was a necessary act. It was required to save our world. Nothing more.” Sage said blankly, not sure what Cream was getting at.
“True… but it was still a good thing! You’re capable of doing good, Sage. You aren’t entirely like your father and I hope that our different origins don’t mean that we can’t be friends.”
“Friends…” Sage said. “I’d like to be friends with you, Cream.” She said with a smile on her face.
“Yay!” Cream jumped joyfully, her pet Chao, Cheese making chirping noises to show how happy they were too.
Sage could not help but smile. “Hm…” Cream thought for a moment, and got an idea. “Hold on, Sage. I want to make something for you to show you how much I care for you and value your friendship!” Cream started to pick some flowers and she immediately got to work. Puzzled, Sage looked at Cream as she weaved each stem of the flowers together. After some time, Cream turned around and showed Sage her finished gift.
“What is it?” Sage asked. “It’s a flower crown! I make these for people I care about! Go ahead, put it on!” Cream giggled as she handed Sage the flower crown. Sage hesitated, only to admire the beauty of what Cream had made for her. She then carefully placed it on top of her head. “This… feels lovely. Thank you, Cream.” Cream giggled and gave Sage a hug. “You look lovely too!” Cheese babbled in agreement and floated in, joining Cream in giving Sage a hug. Sage could not help but feel joy and gratitude as she received her hugs.
“Thank you… my friends.”
