Chapter Text
It was ten at night, the time when Kunikida’s alarm went off, reminding him that it was time to head to sleep. As someone with a strict schedule, it was important he head off to bed at this exact time, needing things to be neat and orderly, that being normal for the man who loved his ideals.
With a sigh, he set down the book he was reading on the end table, standing up from the couch with a groan, stretching his back a bit with a few small cracks, sighing contentedly at the feeling, though still feeling a bit sore from the muscle pains in his shoulders.
He clicked open the door to his room, closing the door softly behind him, not wanting to wake anyone since the dorm walls were practically paper thin, having learned that from experience, living right next to Ranpo, who was currently dating Poe, hopefully he wouldn’t have to go through that tonight and could just get some sleep.
Kunikida fell back onto his bed, arms and legs splayed out for a moment while he stared up at the ceiling, watching the shadows from the leaves and moonlight reflect onto the walls and ceiling, in which it casted a soft glow over the room, not needing a lamp on in the moment.
He then picked at his glasses, sliding them off his face and setting them down onto the nightstand, sitting up a bit in bed as his hands reached behind his head, tugging at the ribbon that held his blonde hair in a ponytail, letting that fall out and his hair fall straight, draping over his shoulders and on the pillow.
Laying back down, he grabbed at the blankets that were folded neatly at the edge of his bed, tugging them upwards and over his body, feeling the warmth consume him in his surprisingly cold room, his eyes fluttering shut while he tried to let sleep overtake him.
He lay there for a while, his body still for a bit before he started shifting a bit, normal for him if he couldn’t fall asleep within the first few minutes of closing his eyes, but then it got slightly easier once he started to hear the rain pour outside, tapping against his window, creating soft background noise.
Except it didn’t, not after someone texted him that is. It was surprising to have someone text him this late, unless they were in an emergency, which he didn’t understand why someone would be in that situation since no one was on duty at this point, but since it was most definitely one of his coworkers, he hesitantly picked up his phone, staring at the screen for a bit.
Dazai 10:14PM: hey
Dazai 10:14PM; i cant sleep
Of course it was Dazai, why wouldn’t it be? And of course he had to be texting for the most dumb reasons, why couldn’t he text anyone else? Why did it have to be Kunikida? Unless he probably knew his schedule and was just trying to get on his nerves, which was most definitely the case.
Kunikida 10:17PM: I can, goodnight.
Dazai 10:18PM: you should let me share your bed
He responded almost instantly, and with that comeback as well? Kunikida could feel his cheeks growing warm, his heart skipping a beat. He stared at the text a bit longer, quickly snapping himself out of whatever that was, looking away for a quick second before responding.
Kunikida 10:20PM: No, I’m trying to sleep.
Dazai 10:20PM: please
Kunikida 10:20PM: Why do you even want to share my bed, Dazai?
Dazai 10:21PM: because its comfortable sleeping with someone else and its cold in my dorm
Kunikida 10:21PM: And what exactly do I get out of this?
Dazai 10:21PM: someone to cuddle with, to share body heat with, and i wont annoy you for the whole day :)
It was a very tempting offer to say the least, which Kunikida would hate to admit, but seeing as how Dazai would get off his ass for the day if they cuddled one time wouldn’t be so bad, as long as no one found out about it of course, so with whatever dignity he had that night, he very hesitantly and probably regrettedly accepted the offer.
~~
Around five minutes had passed since he accepted the offer, about thirty minutes past his bedtime at that point, making him a bit more irritated now that Dazai was taking forever to come over, wasting more time that he could be sleeping.
So he just lay there, staring up at the ceiling while waiting for Dazai to come over, a strange feeling to him since he never waited on Dazai in moments like this, and it was also weird to him that he was slightly excited to have Dazai coming over, and to cuddle for what it’s worth.
Just thinking about it made his heart race a little faster, groaning that just thinking of Dazai was doing something to him, something that he’d prefer not to find out, scared and worried at what the answer could possibly be, but also slightly intrigued.
Finally, after what felt like hours of waiting, he heard the door to his dorm open along with the slightly heavy footsteps along his flooring, the door to his dorm closing after the sound of rain falling.
He didn’t feel like getting out of bed to greet Dazai, knowing he’d most definitely just head right to his room, plus he was too tired to get up since it was now around thirty five or forty minutes since he was supposed to be sleeping, but Dazai was there to ruin it.
“I’m very surprised that you allowed me here, Kunikida-Kun, that’s so unlike you.”
Dazai announced once he walked into Kunikida’s room, jumping directly onto the bed, not caring that Kunikida was currently lying in the middle of it, meaning that Dazai would land directly on Kunikida, causing the air to be knocked out of his lungs.
“Dazai, get off of me.”
Kunikida groaned, trying to push him off, in which he didn’t budge at first, keeping his body draped over Kunikida, but he did eventually fall off of him, laying at his side with his body sprawled out, taking up all of the room on the twin bed.
“Listen, I’m already allowing you to sleep here, but that’s doesn’t mean you have free will in what you do.”
Sitting himself up, Kunikida moved off to the side, pressing himself up against the wall, staring down at Dazai who was currently looking at him all dismissively, hands now placed behind his head as he still took up a ton of space, his brown hair all messed up and spread against his wrists.
“And what does Kunikida-Kun mean by that?”
Kunikida sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, closing his eyes as he tried not to loose he cool, taking a few deep breaths as he opened them once again, crossing his arms over his chest, still staying a decent amount of space away while he talked to Dazai.
“It means that you’re going to stay on one side of the bed, not taking up any more space than needed too.”
Dazai, who had actually been listening that time around, shrugged with a smirk, his smirk, plastered across his lips, shifting himself over to the side closest to the floor, moving his body so he was laying on his side.
Finally, Kunikida could lay down, keeping his body pressed against the wall, his eyes closing again as he tried to drift off into sleep again, which it did work for a bit, until he noticed something else, something that slightly irritated him more, and that was spacing.
See, it’s not easy to share a twin bed between to grown men, so that meant that their bodies were pressed together, no matter how much Kunikida tried to squirm away, their backs would always be touching, which was slightly uncomfortable for Kunikida since he was used to sleeping alone.
But Dazai didn’t seem to mind it one bit, actually, he kind of enjoyed it, but that’s was just because he was more of a cuddler when it came to sleeping next to someone, meaning he liked to be touching the other person that was in bed with him.
Neither of them budged though, trying their hardest to keep to themselves, especially Kunikida, who was doing a decent enough job at it, but it didn’t help the slight pounding in his chest, or the warmness that crossed his cheeks, which he didn’t know why he was feeling that.
They stayed like that for a while, until Kunikida, who still wasn’t able to sleep, so desperately needed to help himself actually manage to sleep, so what he did, while slightly unethical and unexpected on his end, was he decided to flip his body and wrap his arms around Dazai.
Now their positions were Kunikida, who had his chest pressed against Dazai’s back, arms wrapped around his sides and his head resting on the top of Dazai’s head, and Dazai, who was currently being spooned by Kunikida, his face flushing over in a soft red tint.
They both fell silent for a bit, both faces painted over in a soft glow of red, hearts pounding rapidly in their chests, both of which who could probably hear each others, only hearing the sound of rain outside, before Dazai had to break the silence with one of his remarks.
“Wow Kunikida-Kun, I guess you do like cuddling?”
Kunikida’s face flushed a bit more, keeping his eyes shut while he sighed, not talking for a bit while he kept himself pressed up tightly against Dazai, feeling how warm he actually was despite the slightly more frail and thin body, talking after just a tiny bit longer.
“Just for the night, Dazai.”
Dazai nodded, smiling to himself softly as he pushed himself back more into Kunikida’s grip, letting his legs curl up to his chest, feeling contented being held like that, finding it comforting, they both did.
It was a nice feeling, one that brought them both comfort and peace, falling asleep in each other’s arms, the warmth of their bodies, the soft pounding in their chests, soft breathing echoing through the room, leaving them in a world that felt like it was only them.
Just for that one night.
