Adelaide yelped as the large man pushed her roughly into the cell. Her hat fell to the ground as she tripped over someone else's legs. She stood up quickly, trying to salvage a smidge of her dignity.
“Oh fuck you, do you know who I am?!”
The guard grunted, before locking the door with a large rusty key, and turning to leave. Adelaide smoothed out her clothes and went to grab for her hat, before realising that the one other occupant of the cell was holding it in her hands.
“Oi!” Adelaide squawked. “That's mine!”
The other woman raised her eyebrows at her, a smirk playing on her lips, replacing the frown which had been there before.. She held out the hat to Adelaide, before pulling it away before she could take it.
“What's the magic word~?” she drawled in a smooth voice, which made Adelaide angrily blush…which also felt strangely familiar..? Adelaide shook her head.
“May I have my hat back...please.”
The woman grinned, her white teeth glinting in the moonlight, then she tossed the hat to Adelaide, who fumbled a bit catching it. The mysterious woman jumped to her feet, and bowed performatively.
“The names Harper, pleased to make your acquaintance.” she held out a hand. Adelaide huffed, before taking and shaking it gently.
For a moment when their hands touched, there was… something. A spark, a jolt of memories, pulsing from their brains to their fingertips.
At the same moment as Adelaide said. “Do we know each other-?”
Harper said. “Have I met you before-?”
“What?”
“What?”
They stared at each other for a moment, eyes searching, before bursting into uncontrollable laughter.
“W…what's happening?” Adelaide choked out between giggles.
“I don’t know!” Harper said.
At this moment they both realised that their hands were still clasped together, and a blush rose to both of their faces.
“Uh…”
“Um…”
Suddenly a crash came from the hallway, a group of people spilled through the door.
“Captain!” One of them shouted.
“Yes?” both Harper and Adelaide said, before whipping their heads to stare at each other.
Before they could say anything the people in the hallway began shouting over each other, and one whipped out the large rusty key that the guard had. Suddenly the door was open, and both of them were being pulled from the cell.
“What's going on?!” Adelaide, shouted over the chaos.
“We’re being rescued… i think?” Harper yelled back.
As they were dragged onto the ships open deck, the royal navy had realised that their captives were escaping.
Thus began a short skirmish, in which Harper and Adelaide found themselves back to back, fighting off their attackers as if they had done it hundreds of times before.
After commandeering the ship and pushing the rest of the navy men either overboard or into the singular lifeboat and setting it loose, they were off.
Harper watched as Adelaide expertly steered the ship.
“We make a pretty good team, huh?” she asked, Adelaide glanced over her shoulder.
“We do… and I don't know why.” She made eye contact with Harper. “I… know you. I know your blindspots and your weaknesses… and I feel like I should know more.”
“I think i know you too.” Harper said, walking behind Adelaide, placing her hand over where Adelaide’s rested on the wheel.
Their eyes met, and they smiled as dozens of lifetimes rushed back to them. After a long, tense moment, they collapsed into eachothers arms. They knew they didn't have long, so they were going to make it count.
