Work Text:
Lucy wakes up curled into Tim. It’s her favorite part of the day, when her husband didn’t have to leave before her at least. She nuzzles into Tim’s chest. After a lot of things went down, they decided life was short and didn’t want to waste anymore time. They got married on a whim and bought their own home. The wedding was at city hall, but they had a small celebration at their home. All their friends were there. Angela, Wes, Nyla, James, Grey, Luna, Nolan, and Smitty. Yes, Nolan and Smitty finally confessed their feelings. It came out of nowhere, but they were happy for their friends.
It has been nine months since she placed seventeenth on the detective’s exam. Lucy was still sad, but she knew she would get there.
“You’re thinking too hard.” Tim says, his voice husky from just waking up.
“Just thinking about you, of course.” Lucy tells him cheekily. “Can we just stay home today? This is better than work.” Tim chuckles.
“I wish, baby. I’d rather be with you all day.” Tim rolls her in her back and hovers over her body. He kisses her hard as she snakes her arms around his neck.
“We both need to shower.” Lucy tells him. Tim picks her up, eliciting a squeal, and goes into their bathroom. They take an extra long shower and have just enough time to stop for coffee and breakfast at Nevin’s. They get to work with ten minutes to spare.
Lucy runs into the locker room and quickly changes into her uniform. She’s become a pro at putting her hair in the right bun with all the bobby pins needed. As she exits the locker room, she sees Metro headed to roll call.
“There’s my favorite Bradford.” Mad Dog is immediately by her side. “Running late?” He smirks. Lucy rolls her eyes.
“I have two minutes to get to roll call.” Lucy says pointedly. They head to the room and Lucy sits next to Aaron. They’ve been riding together more and she is glad that it’s him at her six since it can’t be Tim.
“Okay everyone.” Grey bellows out. “Settle down. Metro is here today for a very important reason.” Grey lets Tim take the floor. Lucy wonders what the case could be. She doesn’t remember hearing anything, but it is Metro and they move fairly quickly. Lucy’s eyes fall to Tim and seeing him in that gear makes her mouth dry, even at work.
“Listen up everyone.” Tim tells the room. He explains the case, Lucy barely focusing. “Officer Chen.” Lucy is brought out of her thoughts by his loud voice. Tim has a strange look on his face and Lucy is confused.
“Yes sir?” Lucy tried to say sweetly.
“Why are you here?” Her face goes to one of confusion.
“What? I’m scheduled to be here.” Tim gives a look, one she is truly confused about. Has something happened since we got here? It was such a wonderful morning.
“Office Chen, roll call is for patrol officers. So I will ask again. Why are you here?” Now Lucy is beyond confused.
“I, uh, what? I’m a patrol officer, so I’m where I’m supposed to be. Did something change for the day? No one told me differently.” Tim’s face softens and she’s even more confused than she was before.
“Please join me up front Lucy.” Now she’s really not sure what’s going on because he rarely calls her Lucy in front of everyone at work. It’s a slow walk and every single pair of eyeballs is on her. Lucy almost feels sick trying to comprehend what is happening.
“What’s going on?” Lucy asks quietly when she gets closer. Tim shakes his head and moves her to the side.
“You’re in roll call because you’re a patrol officer? Are you sure?” Lucy’s eyes go wide.
“Well, last I checked I was. Unless something happened I don’t know about.” She says nervously. It’s true, she’s almost shaking trying to understand what’s happening.
“You are not a patrol officer. You are actually in the wrong uniform altogether.” Lucy looks at him confused, but he has the biggest smile on his face. “I believe this belongs to you.” Tim opens a box, one that houses a detective’s badge. It’s shiny and brand new. Lucy lets out a gasp and tears form in her eyes.
“I’m pleased to announce you are no longer Officer Chen. You are now Detective Lucy Bradford.” Lucy’s hands go to her mouth as Tim engulfs her in a hug. She told Tim she wanted to go by Bradford when she was able to move out of patrol.
“What? I made detective?” Tim nods as he brings her in for a kiss, not caring they are in front of their colleagues. Everyone is cheering around them. Lucy pulls back and Tim wipes a few tears from her eyes.
“How?” She asks because she truly doesn’t understand how she got promoted. Lucy thought she’d have to retake it. Grey cuts in.
“Primm has been investigated. He’s been fired. You are not the first one he’s done dirty.” Lucy is surprised. “You scored third Lucy and it just so happens there is an open position here. Congratulations detective. You have earned this.” Everyone cheers loudly before disbursing for the day. Tim looks at his wife.
“I am so proud of you. I knew you did amazingly.” You’re going to be the best detective there is.” Lucy kisses Tim once more.
“I couldn’t have done it without you.” Lucy tells Tim as their foreheads touch. Tim looks at his wife and she sees nothing but love.
“We’ll be celebrating later. Now go kick ass like I know you will.” Angela and Nyla are grinning at the door.
“You have her all day, every day. She’s ours for now.” Angela tells him. Lucy rolls her eyes.
“Go change.” Nyla tells her. “Your badge doesn’t match your uniform.” Lucy scampers away to put her street clothes back on. This whole thing feels surreal. The day flies by and Lucy cracks a case they’ve been working on for two weeks. Everyone is impressed and Lucy can’t believe her dreams have become a reality.
Later that night, after Tim has shown his wife how proud he is of her, Lucy is curled into him once more.
“I am so proud of you Lucy. So damn proud. You deserve everything good. It’s your time to shine.” Tim takes a deep breath. “I’m taking over as Watch Commander.” Lucy goes to speak but he stops her. “I want this baby. We will have a family soon. It’s your turn to shine in your career. I’ve done so much, baby. I want better hours for when we have babies.”
“Tim, are you sure you won’t regret it?” Lucy feels unsure yet again.
“I’ll never regret anything when it comes to you. You’re the best thing in my life. The risk was the best one we’ve ever taken. I love you.” Once again, Lucy is speechless.
“I love you Tim. You surprise me everyday. I’m so glad we took this risk.” Tim rolls them over and celebrates his wife once more before drifting off to sleep.
