Chapter 1: A Mad Scientist’s Kidnapping

Chapter Text

June 4th, 2016

10:31 AM

Kusuo sat in the corner of the couch happily eating his coffee jelly in peace. It was early June, a peaceful Saturday morning. Three weeks ago, he saved everyone from a meteor strike and got his powers back so any given break was a relief to him. Honestly, he hasn’t told any of his friends the truth yet. He plans to… just not yet.

Time passed by slowly almost as if something big was going to happen, but it was more than likely just a slow day. Well, that’s what he was hoping for anyway. Lost in his thoughts, he almost didn’t notice his brother entering the room.

“Hey Kusuo!” Kusuo gave Kusuke a blank stare as a response to his annoyingly chirpy tone. Personally, he assumed their relationship was turning out better until a week ago when he started consistently wearing his telepathy canceler again. Not that he minded that he wanted his privacy, but he was oddly overprotective over it this time around which made Kusuo feel suspicious over it.

“Uhm, is mom around?” Kusuke asked. Kusuo took out his phone and shot him a text prompting Kusuke to check his phone.

“No, she went grocery shopping,” it read.

“I see! Well, let her know I will probably not be home for dinner and uhm, can you do me a favor?” Kusuo immediately glared at him as he sheepishly smiled at him.

“It’s nothing too troublesome! Just uh, if I don’t come home by 6:00pm can you open this envelope? Please?” The psychic took the green envelope from his brother’s hand, eyeing it. Is this one of his games? A trap? Truthfully, he thought they were both over those childish games.

“If you’re thinking this is a game of mine, I promise you it’s not. Just please do it, I’ll do whatever you want.” Kusuo sighed and reluctantly nodded at this request. He’s probably lying, anyway.

“Thank you!” Kusuke smiled immediately, wrapping his brother into a hug. Kusuo froze, immediately sensing a small hint of desperation from the hug.

“I love you! And tell mom and dad I love them too when you see them will you? I have to go now.” As he let go, Kusuo immediately felt a sense of dread wash over him. Especially over his words. Maybe mom, but dad? He always pretends to not like him. Something is wrong. The concern must’ve shown in his face because Kusuke noticed it.

“Hmm? Something wrong?” He asked almost as if everything were fine. He is so hard to read… Kusuo shook his head and Kusuke made his way to the door to leave.

“Later, Kusuo.”

5:05 PM

Kusuo glanced at the clock, noting that he had 55 minutes left to open the envelope. He had eased his worries earlier and has been waiting patiently while playing some trashy video game he found. His brother was more than likely fine and if anything was properly waiting til the last minute to come home for dinner. That’s gotta be it right? If not he is probably just playing a practical joke on him. That’s how it is anyway.

5:11 PM

Ok, maybe he wasn’t as patient as he thought. Anxiety was bubbling up inside him and each minute felt like a century. Would it be a big deal if he just tore open the envelope right now? No, no, if he fails he can’t extort his brother for desserts when he backs. He can wait.

5:21 PM

Fuck it.

The psychic tears off the envelope with swift speed and begins to read out the contents of the envelope hoping the words “Haha I fooled you” was written on it. However instead he was met with an ominous letter that sent a shiver down his spine.

Dear Kusuo,

If you’re reading this, it means I more than likely failed my mission. I know I said to open the envelope at 6:00 PM, however I already expect you to open it early anyway. Call me three times to ensure I am in danger like I suspect I will be. If I don’t answer, continue reading.

Kusuo swiftly takes out his phone and calls his brother. The ringing was agonizing and ultimately it went to voicemail.

Again.

No answer.

Once more.

….

Damn it. Kusuo looks down to continue reading.

Alright, if I didn’t answer you may now continue reading. I can’t explain in detail, but I received a dangerous mission from the government a while ago. I suspect one of my colleagues snitched on me knowing valuable information and betrayed the government agency. My suspicions weren’t confirmed until last week when I was attacked when I was completing my duties in Yokohama. I escaped then, but I had to return today for reasons I cannot say. I have been more than likely captured by the Port Mafia, an organization I was researching on.

Please help. Don’t tell mom and dad, they will only worry. Also, don’t bother with your time leap ability. It wont work.

Here’s the address of where I had to have my meeting.

Kusuo immediately teleported to the location without a second thought.

The area was quite isolated. Honestly, it was a perfect place to capture someone if anything. Why in the hell would his brother agree to meet at a location like this?

Never mind that, but what exactly should he look for? Kusuo scanned the area before feeling drawn to a small alleyway between this one odd building. The psychic slowly made his way, feeling a sense of dread overwhelming him. Kusuo felt his whole body freeze when he saw what he saw.

There were three notable things he noticed on the floor of the alleyway.

  • Kusuke’s telepathy canceler.
  • A cracked smartphone.
  • A pool of dried up blood.

Blood. Kusuo felt sick.

Ok ok, maybe it wasn’t his blood..

The paranoid bastard carries multiple firearms and various weapons on him. It could’ve easily been his attacker's blood. Or it could’ve been already there when he made it there. Kusuke was fine. He has to be.

Kusuo picked up the telepathy canceler and the smart phone before pausing and looking at the blood again.

He can’t stop thinking about it.

Kusuo swiftly took off his transparent glove and put his hand on the blood spot. Sadly, it seemed to be recent considering he felt some of the moisture rub against his skin.

Psychometry. A memory flashed through his head.

“I won’t give up my information so easily,” Kusuke said glaring at his attacker, pointing a gun at him. The attacker had black hair with white streaks at the bottom. He looked at Kusuke as if he were a bug.

“You should appreciate the fact that I have to take you in alive. Rashoman.” The ability stabbed Kusuke’s leg as he let out a yelp.

“Shit!” Kusuke tried shooting at him to no avail before the mysterious figure knocked the gun out and wrapped his ability around him, essentially tying him up. The telepathy canceler and phone fell out as they left the premises.

Well, at least he’s alive.

But that’s not what’s important…

Who was that guy and what the hell was that ability? This won’t be as easy as he thought.

Kusuo sighed before teleporting back home to continue on with his investigation on what to do next.
