That one number

Summary:

Ashton needed ONE number. Just one. Is luck on his side?

Notes:

Anyone who has ever played bingo would understand this. A very common occurrence.

Work Text:

“I need a B9”, Ashton said over a table of cards set to be marked on the right numbers. He needed only one number, just one and then he would win. Gyroro and Ururu perched on his back, as usual, but they were quiet. “This time, I’ll get it! I have to win! Luck has to be on my side at least some of the time!”

Especially since his friends had no issues with winning at least once. Dias won at least three times. Ashton lost count in that case.

/Everyone else has luck! Everyone except for me/.

Yet he is told how fortunate he is to have the constant dragons with him. He thought of that as bad luck. Well, at first, at least. His swordsmanship came with hard work, discipline and skill. In that sense, he made his own luck, just like he was trying to do now with as many papers as his table would allow.

”B10!” The caller announced. “B10!”

”Damn it! NO!” Ashton grit his teeth. Dias was close too, but he already won, so Ashton hoped that some of the luck would come down his way for once.

”G49!” The announcer called.

”NO!” Ashton again grit his teeth. Sure, he had G49, but it wouldn’t lead to the necessary pattern. The dragons chuckled because they’ve seen this many times.

He heard the rumblings from the crowd now. People were close. Tension filled the air, but that was nothing new in a game like this. No one has called, but he knew that in one or two numbers, someone will.

“Hopefully me,” Ashton muttered.

“B…The caller began, drawing it out like a torture blade.

”Come on! Come on! Come on!” Ashton’s breaths came out in gasps, his heart pounded like a drum. “B9…come on!”

”8!”

”BINGO!” Someone called. That someone was not Ashton. Worse, that someone only had one sheet of paper, according to the comments.

“NO!” Ashton fell on his arms, not knowing or caring what happened to the papers. He didn’t bother figuring out who won either. Fol exchanged, happy cheers, and an announcement from the caller.

”Next number was B9!”

”AAAAAGH…” Ashton groaned, waiting for the new set of papers to arrive. “The story of my life! If I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck!”
