The Angel's Shadow

Summary:

A small look into the mind of a small girl, hope you enjoy

Notes:

For a long while, I was pretty apathetic to Yoonseo. I could tell from pretty early on that she would eventually betray Yeonhwa, I just didn't expect the betrayal to take the form it did. I decided to write this fanfic as a way to attempt to better understand her character, and I am very glad I did. The first bit is right after Yeonhwa saves her from the bullies, and the second bit is the start of the schoolyear the main story takes place in.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

As she was escorted to the teacher’s office, Heo Yoonseo felt like she was in a daze.  Yang Dahye, the first friend she ever had, had betrayed her, and let the other girls hit her.  While it wasn’t a surprise that those girls wanted to hit her, she had thought Dahye liked her.  She thought she had finally found someone who would be willing to let Yoonseo lean on them, just to push Yoonseo away when she needed her most.

But it was okay now!  Yoonseo looked over at her pale savior, Yeonhwa (she thought, although she was probably wrong) with mild awe.  The way that she had stood up for her against all of those other girls had been so heroic.  And she had done it for her.  Not some random girl off the street, but Heo Yoonseo, the most useless girl in the school!  Yeah, maybe the albino was asking her to lie with her to the teachers, but lying to teachers together was very romantic.  She didn’t think she would mind lying, if it was for the Yeonhwa.  The albino noticed her staring, and flashed her a quick smile through her grimace of pain.  Yeah, Yoonseo was definitely willing to lie for her.

The start of the new school year had sent Yoonseo over the moon.  She and Yeonhwa were not only in the same class, but they sat right next to each other!  This meant that they could spend practically the entire day together!  There was one small thing that was bothering Yoonseo still though.  Why did Yeonhwa have to refer to her as a toy?  She wasn’t arrogant enough to think that she was actually Yeonhwa’s equal, but still, she didn’t want to be referred to as a toy.  A toy was so easily abandoned when the person playing with it was done, and Yoonseo didn’t want that!  She wanted to stay with Yeonhwa forever, and no matter how precious a toy was, a toy was always abandoned in the end.

She always did her best to please Yeonhwa.  Yoonseo knew exactly how the albino wanted her to act.  She melted so readily into Yeonhwa’s affection, she was always ready to apply the albino’s sunscreen when she asked, she even sometimes did the taller girl’s homework!  That thought brought Yoonseo back to a particular assignment she had had to do for the albino, when she went to the other girl’s house, and got to see her working out.  She was very glad that the essay had been submitted online, because if it was a physical paper, she would have had to redo the assignment because of the stains her nosebleed would have caused.

It was actually Lee Songyi of all people who helped her solve her conundrum.  She and Yeonhwa had been walking to the cafeteria for lunch when Lee Songyi bumped into her.  She wasn’t quite sure if Songyi intended to bump into her or not, but Songyi exclaimed something that made her realize what she wanted to be for Yeonhwa.

“Watch where you are walking, you stupid fucking shadow!”  Yoonseo had been somewhat surprised to hear Songyi swear in the hallways, but she quickly put that to the side.  “Stupid fucking shadow.”  Her lack of intelligence was of little importance, Yeonhwa didn’t need her to be a genius.  She felt her cheeks flush, she did do that with Yeonhwa, so that also wasn’t wrong.  Shadow.  She knew exactly what she wanted to be.  Forever bonded to the albino, never to part ways, it made her feel all cozy just to think about!  It didn’t matter if she, a shadow, wasn't able to stand tall next to Yeonhwa, as long as she was never abandoned, she would be content.

Notes:

I wanted to work something in about Yoonseo having a shitty home life, but I wasn't quite sure where to do that so I decided against it. Yoonseo in my mind is a massive romantic with no self-esteem. She wants to be together forever with Yeonhwa, but she doesn't believe that she "deserves" to be in an equal relationship. She is fine being Yeonhwa's belonging rather than her girlfriend, as long as Yoonseo is her only belonging. Yoonseo is much more emotional than Yeonhwa or Dahye, so I put a lot more exclamation marks in her POV. I wasn't sure about Songyi dropping an F bomb at first, but upon re-reading some of her interactions in the first half of 'have no wings', its 100% in character.

Please, leave a kudos or comment if you enjoyed this fic. I have more work coming up in this fandom, with a drafted "Dahye bad end" fanfic written for have no wings, it just needs editing.
