Kiss Me Like You Hate Me (but you love me)

Summary:

5 times when Katsuki and Shouto resolve their conflicts by angry kissing.
+1 time when they don't.

Notes:

I have no idea why I wrote it but... well, it just happened, I guess?

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Both Kacchan and Shouto-kun are really straightforward people so Izuku shouldn’t be probably surprised by their getting together as soon as they go through their respective feelings denial phases. Besides, he wasn’t surprised by the same fucking date me, you half’n’half asshole incident but more by the fact it concluded without explosions, excessive expletives or death threats. It was rather peaceful (much to everyone’s relief), much more peaceful than anything that came later.

Kacchan and Shouto love each other and it’s not a secret to anyone who was blessed with witnessing them for like a five minutes. They love each other and, to be perfectly honest, Izuku never saw two people being so much in love.

They tend to have some problems though. It’s nothing that could make them break up but it’s… quite spectacular. Izuku isn’t really convinced by this euphemism – actually, he thinks there are plenty of better descriptions: horrifying, deadly dangerous, hazardous for world peace… He could go on, probably, but he doesn’t think semantics are that important.

The thing is that Izuku is extremely happy for his friends and their relationship. He just wishes they could resolve their occurring quite regularly conflicts in a little more civilized way. By talking, maybe.

But maybe talking is a little too much to ask for. Izuku’d be fine with other solutions as well: harmless hugs (note: not every hug is harmless!), spontaneous dates, or even sparring sessions. It’d be fine, really.

Because aggressive kissing these two practice on an almost daily basis isn’t.

1

The first time Izuku has the dubious pleasure of witnessing Kacchan and Shouto’s way of resolving arguments, he’s not quite sure what’s even going on. The whole situation seems to be rather trivial but apparently, it is a big problem and it escalates way too quickly.

It happens on Saturday morning which makes the whole ordeal much worse. Because Izuku likes, he’d even say loves, Saturday mornings and he’d love to enjoy them in peace. And not accompanied by chaotic yelling and dangerously low-temperature levels. Unfortunately, the universe isn’t too merciful to him today.

“Don’t even start,” Kacchan spits out through gritted teeth. It’s no use though because there’s a pout on Shouto’s pretty face already. “You can’t…”

“I can,” Shouto interrupts which makes Kacchan even angrier. He hates being interrupted, especially when he thinks he’s right. So he hates being interrupted in general. And Shouto may be an exception to many positions on Kacchan’s I hate when people list but interrupting him isn’t one of them. “And you,” Shouto continues, completely unfazed by the murderous look directed at him, as he points the finger into Kacchan’s chest, “can’t tell me what to do.”

“That’s so, princess?” Kacchan asks, grabbing both of Shouto’s hands and pinning him to the counter. He definitely doesn’t waste time today. Shouto shoots him an unimpressed look but Kacchan simply doesn’t care. Izuku just hopes they won’t have sex in the kitchen. Again.

“Yes,” Shouto responds, firmly and with the confidence no one else could find in themselves in such a situation. Izuku’d probably faint at the spot.

Then, Kacchan narrows his eyes and Izuku can see something changing in his look. His grip on Shouto’s hands gets tighter (judging by Shouto’s expression, at least) and Kacchan leans in, closing the distance between them. They’re really close and their breaths must mingle at this point, but none of them seems to mind. Katsuki smirks and it looks feral. Izuku should probably start to worry about Shouto but the only thing he can focus on is the firm whisper leaving Kacchan’s mouth:

“You can’t eat these fucking noodles all the time.”

Izuku blinks once, twice, thrice… Is this all about noodles? In this particular matter, about the cold soba? Izuku shakes his head, smiling fondly. He already started worrying it was something important and they’re just arguing about the food! Before he has the chance to sigh with relief, Shouto snorts (note: it’s a really, really bad sign!) and suddenly the temperature in the room drops dramatically.

“You little fucker.” Kacchan exhales, almost furiously, and Izuku doesn’t know which of his friends should he feel more sorry for. Kacchan is mad, of course, but Izuku’s pretty sure Shouto won’t appreciate such a compliment.

He doesn’t. “What did you just say?” He asks as the temperature in the room drops even more. Izuku sees the frost running through his right arm. It’s bad, it’s really bad.

Then before the situation can escalate even more and before Izuku finds in himself enough courage to intervene, Kacchan grabs Shouto’s by his neck. Izuku’s eyes widen and he expects the worst already. Nothing explodes though.

Instead of this, Kacchan kisses Shouto hard. It has to hurt because Shouto lets out a small and not-very-pleased grunt. It doesn’t stop Kacchan though and after a quick glance at Shouto’s annoyed face, he deepens the kiss. From this moment, it takes Shouto exactly eighteen seconds to close his eyes and kiss Kacchan back.

It’s loud and wet, and Izuku feels like he shouldn’t look. But then he remembers, they’re in the kitchen. That’s Saturday morning and Izuku came here to make breakfast. And he can’t because his best friends make out on the kitchen counter. When he focuses his sight on Kacchan and Shouto again, he notices, with sheer horror, that Shouto isn’t pinned to the counter anymore. He’s sitting on it – his legs wrapped around Kacchan’s waist and his fingers gripped into blond locks.

Kacchan pulls away but his face remains just inches from Shouto’s. “You fuckin’ idiot,” Kacchan breathes out. Once again, Izuku’s sure Shouto doesn’t appreciate the sentiment. This time though, there’s no change in the temperature as Shouto settles for diving into another kiss.

“Please, not again,” Izuku whispers to himself then, observing absently as Kacchan’s hands roam through Shouto’s chest, one of them disappearing under his shirt. Well, not actually Shouto’s shirt but that’s not the point. That’s not the point at all.

Then they pull away again, both panting and their breathing laboured, and (on the good side) they don’t seem angry anymore. The bad thing is they look… Well, they look excited.

“No soba for the breakfast,” Kacchan says against Shouto’s lips. Shouto wants to argue back – Izuku knows it, he can even see it. However, he doesn’t and Izuku is positive it’s related to Kacchan doing… Izuku doesn’t know what exactly he’s doing but judging by broken noises leaving Shouto’s mouth he shouldn’t do it in public. “Understood?” Kacchan asks and Shouto, panting even more than before the moment, nods weakly.

2

The second time it happens, Izuku’s just terrified. He’s pretty sure Kacchan’s ready to murder someone (or actually anyone) and it’s the miracle no one gets hurt in the process. The correction: no one gets severely hurt in the process.

It’s a quiet, nice evening actually. Izuku sits on the couch, Ochako on his right and Tenya on his left. They talk about training schedules, some school appointments and things that don’t really matter that much in comparison to the troubles of hero students’ lives. It’s perfect.

It’s perfect until the door to the dorms doesn’t open loudly and then slams shut. Tenya’s head whips around and he quickly retreats his sight.

“I’m not going through this again,” he states firmly, standing up. “I wish you good night,” he adds but none of them believes it’ll be a good night. It’ll be a terrible night, probably.

Izuku and Ochako exchange worried looks and Izuku turns around just to see the absolute fury on Kacchan’s face and evenly irritated look on Shouto’s.

“Don’t drag me,” Shouto hisses, trying to free himself from Kacchan’s grip. It’s a futile effort though as Kacchan doesn’t express any interest in letting him go. He turns around to face Shouto and the tension is almost visible. “What do you think you’re doing, huh?”

Kacchan glances at Shouto, his eyes narrowed and he looks really, really angry. They exchange looks for a while, and then Kacchan yells, “What do I think I’m doing?!” He’s not just angry, he’s furious. “I should ask you that!”

Shouto doesn’t like yelling in general and everyone is well aware of it, so it doesn’t surprise Izuku when he demands, “Don’t yell at me. It’s not my fault you can’t control yourself!”

“Can’t control myself?!” Kacchan repeats, chuckling darkly. Izuku tenses, sensing immediately this one isn’t just a small disagreement about Shouto’s eating habits. “And you fucking can, huh, princess?!”

In lieu of a response, Shouto glares at Kacchan – his look is challenging and Izuku quickly deduces it’s probably the worst possible scenario. Unfortunately, he isn’t wrong.

When Shouto doesn’t reply verbally, Kacchan speaks up again and it leaves Izuku (and not only him) stunned. “I fucking wonder what you two would do if I wouldn’t stop you! Probably would let him fuck you, wouldn’t you?” Shouto stills and just stares at Kacchan who doesn’t seem to notice that and just goes on with his rant. “Or maybe you already did, huh?”

“What the hell you’re talking about?!” Shouto asks and Izuku feels really miserable just because of seeing his friend so devastated. He immediately stands up, aiming to stop the situation from escalating before it gets out of control completely.

“Wouldn’t be even so surprised, ya know?” Kacchan continues and by the time Izuku appears next to them, he adds, “You’re fucking desperate for it.”

Then Izuku opens his mouth to say something, anything, but Shouto’s quicker. “Yoarashi’s just my friend,” he says, and after pulling Kacchan by his shirt, he hisses coldly, “And you’re a possessive freak.”

Izuku holds his breath without even realizing it as his eyes alternate between his friends. Ochako appears from nowhere and grabs him by the arm, dragging him away. He should probably thank her for it because seconds later, Kacchan’s hand lands on the wall with a loud exploding sound, right next to Shouto’s head.

“Kacchan!” Izuku exclaims but neither Kacchan nor Shouto seem to acknowledge his presence here.

“What did ya call me?” Kacchan asks, his voice dangerously low, as he leans in.

“You heard me,” Shouto shoots right back and Kacchan has an odd expression on his face. He’s angry, he is, but there’s something else as well. Izuku doesn’t think he ever saw Kacchan like that.

Before he manages to do anything, Kacchan growls something Izuku can’t decipher and he pulls Shouto into kiss. In a sense, it’s similar to the soba incident, but at the same time, it’s so different. Shouto whines at the sudden contact and Izuku thinks his friends actively try to kill each other through kissing, which to this moment wasn’t something Izuku’d classify as possible. But it is, it most definitely is.

It looks like it hurts and it has to hurt because, after a moment of this oddly specific fight, Izuku sees the blood dripping from Shouto’s chin. He doesn’t know if it’s Shouto’s blood but someone’s bleeding. Because of kissing. Very aggressive kissing.

Shouto and Kacchan pull away eventually and Izuku doesn’t think he could be more surprised today but Kacchan proves him wrong when he licks his lips seductively and whispers, “You’re lucky I fuckin’ love you.”

Shouto snorts then and he whispers back, “I think you’re the lucky one, Katsuki.”

Kacchan hums, kinda thoughtfully, but Izuku doesn’t think he reflects on this at all. Probably because of the fact his lips land on Shouto’s neck and he seems to forget about the whole world, too focused on… Marking Shouto up, Ochako supplies.

“Yeah, that,” Izuku mumbles and he decides to ignore the fact that Kacchan lifts Shouto’s leg. It’s easy – he just needs to look away and pretend nothing happened here at all. Ignoring the noises made by Shouto – his whimpers, soft grunts and quiet pleads – is much more difficult so Izuku decides he should just leave and go to sleep. He’s not gonna witness whatever in hell is going to happen here in the next couple of minutes.

Deciding to not wait for the lift (too much risk), he hears yet Kacchan saying, “I might be a possessive freak.” Then there’s a short break and judging by the sounds, some more kissing, marking and other unholy activities accompanied by filthy sounds before Kacchan continues, “But I’m your possessive freak.”

The third time it happens, Izuku has officially enough. However, Kyouka has enough even more because, unfortunately, she can hear much more than him. It appears that she doesn’t like to suffer alone so she shares details.

This time it’s kinda unexpected. Nothing should happen but life likes to be unpredictable at times.

Kacchan is cooking and he even offered to make some more food for Izuku and others. It probably is related to Shouto whispering something to Kacchan’s ear (which made him smirk, blush and smile softly, in this order) and his overall good humour. His good humour is also probably related to Shouto. At this point, Izuku thinks, everything about Kacchan seems to be related to Shouto.

Then, things go south, when Shouto says out of the blue, “I went to meet Sora yesterday.”

“Again?” Kacchan asks and Izuku doesn’t see him but he knows Kacchan rolls his eyes.

“Mhm,” Shouto hums, and then hell opens right before them, when he adds, “You should go with me next time.”

Kacchan stills suddenly and glances at Shouto with a stern look. “No way,” he blurts out.

“Why?” Shouto asks as he leaves his place on the couch and goes to the kitchen.

“Why would I?” Kacchan asks, his glare intensifies as he sighs. “It’s bad enough I have to come with you to these fuckin’ cat cafes.”

Have to?” Shouto asks and Izuku is forced to fight his urge to hide somewhere. Anywhere. Kacchan seems to notice the problem as well because he leaves the food and turns around to Shouto. “You said you liked it,” Shouto accuses.

Kacchan frowns as he speaks up, “Liked what? Furballes nagging me all the time?” It’s Shouto’s turn to frown now but Kacchan doesn’t stop. “Couldn’t even drink my coffee without the fur in my cup.”

Shouto reconsiders for a moment, and then he says, “So you lied to me.”

The accusation isn’t very appreciated by Kacchan though as he replies, “The fuck? I didn’t lie to you. Never said I like these annoying assholes.”

The note: never call cats annoying assholes in front of Shouto Todoroki. It’s a bad idea. Very, very bad idea.

“They’re not assholes. And they’re not annoying,” Shouto argues, circling around the counter to face Kacchan. “They’re cute,” he adds and his voice indicates this information is essential.

“As if,” Katsuki shoots back, rather not convinced. Well, Izuku understands why Kacchan… doesn’t exactly like cats. After all, he had some interesting interactions with them when they both were kids. “Fuckin’ hideous,” he adds and he probably understands his mistake the moment these words leave his mouth.

Shouto gasps loudly and Izuku knows what’s coming next. Kacchan knows too. “You did not.”

“I fuckin’ did,” Kacchan responds because of course he does. Then, he approaches Shouto and asks, with his mouth inches from Shouto’s ear, “What you’re gonna do about it, huh?”

Shouto, to say the least, isn’t very happy with the attitude so he… kisses Kacchan, obviously. They whisper something to each other in the short moments between the next kisses and Izuku is really glad it’s too quiet for him to hear them.

Until he isn’t glad at all. “I’m not gonna suffer by myself,” someone states and Izuku turns around to see Jirou standing next to him. “He called him a kitten,” she adds, a face and voice completely neutral. Izuku chokes on the air.

“Please don’t,” Izuku manages to say. Jirou glances at him and when Izuku meets her sight, he can say immediately she hears too much on a daily basis. Before he can stop himself, he asks. “You okay?”

“No. I’m not.” Jirou replies. “No dinner for us today,” she informs. Obviously. Then she leaves but not before she adds, “There’ll be collar involved.”

4

The fourth time it happens, Izuku witnesses pettiness in its prime and it’s such a revelation. He also discovers that oh, shut up can be also interpreted as I’m sorry, kay.

For some reason, unknown to Izuku, everyone he knows and the whole universe, Kacchan and Shouto always argue in the common area. Izuku even starts reconsidering if they just like the audience. Is it an exhibitionism already?

This time, Izuku is sure it’ll end with an argument even before Shouto appears in the common room. One quick glance on Kacchan and he knows. The thing is he and Kacchan have known each other since they were kids so Izuku can recognize a lot of faces Kacchan makes. Maybe even most of them.

The look Kacchan currently has on his face says clearly: danger! stay back! run! and it’s a problem. Most of their classmates don’t know the look and Izuku’s suggestions to not approach Kacchan don’t work too well.

By the time Shouto appears in the common area, with messy hair and in Kacchan’s favourite shirt, some things already happened. Kaminari lies on the floor, without any movement while Jirou and Tokoyami debate if he’s still alive. The three kitchen stools are damaged beyond repair. Sero is injured and Izuku’s pretty sure Kirishima was on fire just before the moment.

Shouto completely ignores the utter chaos around him and goes to the kitchen. He kisses Kacchan on the cheek and normally it’d go like that: Kacchan’d ruffle Shouto’s hair with a soft smile reserved only for one person, and then they’d debate what to eat for breakfast, Kacchan’d kiss Shouto’s forehead and Shouto’d hug him from behind as Kacchan’d make them something to eat.

Not today though. Because Shouto kisses Kacchan’s cheek and he’s gifted not with a smile but with a loud, raspy scowl. It happens quickly: he looks at Kacchan with a mix of disbelief and something Izuku can’t even describe, already pouting, which makes Kacchan sigh. Shouto narrows his eyes and with a smile that could easily kill, he says, “Good morning to you too, Katsuki.” Kacchan grumbles something not really audible back and it’s a bad idea because Shouto nods slowly and concludes, “Fine.”

Then Shouto grabs the glass and juice from the fridge and leaves the kitchen, heading to the couch. He sits down and tries his best to pretend he doesn’t notice Kacchan staring at him, somehow confused. Izuku doesn’t understand the source of the confusion though because it was obvious that Shouto’d react this way.

“What’s your fucking problem, huh?” Kacchan asks and Shouto doesn’t even grace him with a glance, opting to check his phone. He even smiles at something and it makes Kacchan’s blood boil.

It’s not that much surprise that Kacchan leaves the kitchen as well and approaches Shouto who still ignores him. Kacchan, not known for his patience, grabs Shouto’s chin and lifts it to make Shouto look at him. It doesn’t work very well as Shouto averts his eyes, deciding that the floor is much more interesting than Kacchan’s face. “You deaf or what?” Kacchan asks but he’s being ignored again. “Oi!”

Izuku sighs. He deduces it’ll take them some time so he moves to the kitchen. He’s hungry. While he chooses some vegetables, he hears Kacchan saying, “Don’t fuckin’ ignore me.”

Then Shouto sighs, a little dramatically, in the manner that Aoyama taught him and that annoys Kacchan to no end. Izuku turns around with some greens and proceeds to chop them. He should probably look at the veggies he’s chopping to avoid losing his fingers but his eyes naturally gravitate to Shouto and Kacchan.

Kacchan apparently decides it’s time to end this argument and leans in to kiss Shouto but Shouto isn’t so sure about ending this there and now so he moves his head, escaping the kiss. Kacchan glares at him with a look everyone except Shouto is terrified of and growls lowly. Shouto, on the other hand, isn’t very impressed and leans more into the couch.

“Stop being an asshole about that,” Kacchan says and Shouto raises one of his eyebrows as if he’d like to say you’re the one being an asshole. Kacchan gets the message because he grimaces, catching Shouto’s hand in the process. Izuku barely avoids losing a thumb.

Shouto glances at his hand for a moment with a stern look but he lets Kacchan hold it. “You’re being mean,” he says and Kacchan smirks at him.

“You like me mean,” Kacchan replies and he looks like he’s going to try to kiss Shouto again.

“I like my morning routine better,” Shouto shoots back and Kacchan huffs. “You should work on your manners,” he adds and Kacchan shakes his head, visibly amused.

Then, they kiss eventually and Izuku initially thinks it’ll be a rather family-friendly kiss. It isn’t because Shouto is angry and he doesn’t like being denied of his morning dose of affection. Kacchan is being grabbed by his nape as Shouto presses his lips even closer. Usually, Kacchan is the one who takes control of the kisses and other activities but right now Shouto shows Kacchan what exactly he thinks of this kind of treatment.

“You gonna behave now?” Shouto asks, parting them away. Kacchan is panting, he looks exhausted but there’s a wild grin on his face as well.

“Oh, shut up, princess,” he replies as he leans into the next kiss. Shouto lets him.

The fifth time it happens, Izuku has no idea what it is about. And he doesn’t care. He has enough. They need to stop.

In the contrary to the well-known pattern, it takes place in Gym Gamma, so Izuku concludes it’s somehow related to training, quirks combabilities and an enormous explosion that almost made him deaf. Not like it matters. It doesn’t.

And today Izuku decides to not care about it at all. He’s here to train (because it is a training ground and not a place constructed for bizarre foreplay) so he focuses on his quirk and Kirishima who agreed to spare with him. It isn’t an exactly easy task if you hear constant yelling and expletives. Explosions too. Too loudly and too close. Izuku wonders if he should worry about being an accidental victim of Kacchan’s anger-infused quirk overuse. Probably yes.

“You goddamn idiot!” Kacchan yells and Izuku forces himself to not look around. Kirishima smiles at him nervously.

“I’d appreciate it if you’d watch your mouth,” Shouto spits out and he sounds annoyed. Izuku sighs.

It’s none of Izuku’s business. It’s none of his business. None of his business. None.

“I’ll fuckin’ kill you,” Kacchan declares and Izuku thinks he actually turned off his brain for a while because there are a couple of missing sentences here. For sure.

Kirishima laughs nervously in front of Izuku and it makes his thoughts come back to the matter on the hand. “I’m kinda scared here,” Kirishima admits as he looks at something over Izuku’s back. Or at someone. At two people. One of them currently calling the other one a spoiled princess. The usual thing, the usual day. Let’s pay them no mind.

Then, the explosion. Loud one. Izuku sighs as he reminds himself quietly: do not look, do not look, do not look. He doesn’t look. Kirishima does though. “He pinned him to the ground.” Izuku doesn’t ask who pinned who. He doesn’t want to know. “Oh,” Kirishimas says then, and a moment later he adds, “Bakugou flipped him over.”

“Fantastic,” Izuku mutters.

“They’re kissing,” Kirishima informs then.

“Of course they do,” Izuku replies, sighing. Of course, they do.

“It looks dangerous,” Kirishima adds, concerned about whatever in the hell he sees. “But at least they won’t fight anymore.”

Well, that’s a good thing, Izuku supposes.

+1

Izuku was ready for the worst. Instead of a complete catastrophe, he got the most heartwarming scene he ever saw. He hopes someone recorded it because this stuff has to make it to the wedding reception.

It was one hell of a fight, to say the least. Most of Izuku’s classmates are injured less or more and he is fine only thanks to his Danger Sense. Shouto and Kacchan, on the other hand, aren’t in the best condition. They’re alive and it’s a miracle considering today’s events.

They’re currently listening to Aizawa-sensei’s lecture. Well, Aizawa isn’t exactly happy with them because they just set a new record of recklessness. Kacchan and Shouto have enough decency to not interrupt him, at least. The lecture ends faster than Izuku expected which apparently is related to villains they fought earlier.

Their teacher leaves, sighing and murmuring something about problem children, and Kacchan wastes no time. “You could fuckin’ die, you goddamn idiot!” He stares at Shouto and it’s the first time when Izuku sees so much intensity in his red eyes.

Shouto snorts, averting his eyes. “I’m not the one who got shot,” he replies, unamused. He looks upset and Kacchan seems to dislike it as much as Izuku does. No decent person likes to see Shouto Todoroki sad.

“I didn’t have a fuckin’ choice,” Kacchan argues, but his voice is much quieter now.

Shouto glances at him as he asks, “And I did?”

Kacchan bites his lips, but he doesn’t say no. Instead, he repeats, “You could die.”

“You could die too,” Shouto says then and they just look at each other for something that feels like an eternity.

Kacchan is the one who stops the silence. “You fuckin’ idiot,” he says but there’s no real bite to it. He moves closer and grabs Shouto in his arms. Shouto sighs softly and lies his head on Kacchan’s shoulder. “Don’t you dare do it to me again,” Kacchan whispers.

Shouto lifts his head and looks at Kacchan. Izuku thinks he’s about to say he can’t make such promises but Shouto doesn’t say anything. Instead, he traces his fingers across Kacchan’s cheek. Izuku observes with absolute amazement as Kacchan’s expression softens gradually and he seems to even smile a little.

Their looks meet again and it takes only a few seconds before their lips meet in the gentlest and sweetest kiss Izuku ever saw. (most of the kisses Izuku saw were nothing like this) Shouto’s fingers land on Kacchan’s hair and he pets them tenderly while Kacchan moves his hands to Shouto’s waist. Izuku thinks he shouldn’t be watching them. It feels too intimate.

They part away after a very long moment (Izuku couldn’t stop observing them) but they’re still very, very close to each other, their mouths barely separated. “I love you,” Shouto whispers and Kacchan kisses him again, smiling lovingly.
