Work Text:
Quiet had settled over the Gummi city of Ursalia. A handful of Barbics were patrolling the area, but on the whole most of the abandoned city's new inhabitants were asleep already. Ursa, the leader of the Barbics, had allowed the Glen Gummies to stay the night. It was the least she could do for the trouble she wound up causing them.
In fact, it had been Ursa's own actions that caused sleep to allude her tonight. She had been blinded by her own pain, the loss of her home. She had been angry. Hatred, such a poison in itself, had taken hold of her soul and driven her to think things that could have had disastrous consequences.
Ursa had not been quite aware of where her bare feet had carried her, her thoughts flowing and ebbing. She had come to this City in the wake of the fall of Barbic Woods, looking for a weapon. She had come here with the intent to cause harm, to incite war. To put an end to the human race. Great Gum, what had she been thinking? Her anger had gave her a rather narrow case of tunnel vision. The Barbic clan itself was dying already. Ursa herself was the only remaining female, her son, Buddi, was their last remaining cub. That hurt to think about but its none the less true. If they did not find outsider Gummis to mingle with, her Buddi would potentially become the last of the Barbics.
As Ursa walked through the silent streets of Ursalia, her thoughts churned with regret and self-reproach. The weight of her actions and intentions bore down heavily upon her. The quiet of the night seemed to amplify her inner turmoil, reminding her of the gravity of her choices.
She remembered the destruction of Barbic Woods, the once vibrant home of her clan, now reduced to ashes and memories. The pain of loss fueled her anger, leading her down a path she now saw as fraught with peril. The desire for vengeance against the humans who had brought ruin upon her people had consumed her, blinding her to the consequences of her actions.
But now, amidst the stillness of the city, Ursa found herself grappling with the reality of her situation. The Barbic clan was dwindling, teetering on the brink of extinction. Her anger and hatred had clouded her judgment, threatening to seal the fate of her species.
That was why, initially Ursa had been happy to have come across the small clan of Glen Gummies. To find other bears was to find hope. There were cubs too! Ursa remembered the small light that had pierced through her heart when Buddi was drawn to the Glen girl. The future of her clan was briefly clear. And surely the Glens would understand her plight. There was so few of them already, surely they were succumbing due the same reasons? Human cruelty.
That hope had shattered the moment Ursa made her intents clear.
Because the Glens hadn't understood. They argued against her ideas of vengeance. Spoke of friendships, of peace with humans. That way of thinking - it was dangerous. Humans were working to destroy their very way of life and the Glens would rather stand to the wayside? Inexcusable! What had she been thinking, entertaining the idea of letting that girl anywhere near Buddi?
As Ursa wandered the deserted streets of Ursalia, her mind continued to wrestle with conflicting emotions. The encounter with the Glen Gummies had left her feeling even more isolated in her anger and desire for retribution. The hope she had briefly glimpsed in the possibility of solidarity with another bear clan had been shattered by their refusal to embrace her vision of vengeance.
Ursa had pressed on. She had found her ultimate weapon. And she was going to take it! However, a struggle had broken out between the Glens and Barbics. The Glens had intended to destroy the horn. It was annoying - and perhaps she had underestimated these human lovers. They had put up a decent fight that took the Barbics all afternoon to overcome. But Ursa and her bears had emerged victorious.
How had she not noticed, in the scuffle for the horn, that Buddi had gone missing?
The next Ursa saw her child, he was in the hands of an enemy of the Glens. A human as rotten to the core as any she ever saw. And against her better judgement, Ursa had used the horn.
How COULD she? That blast would have hit Buddi no matter what! And Sunni...the Glen girl had been captured with him. The lives of the two cubs were nearly on her hands - and Ursa chose to use the horn anyways, despite the plea of the Glen leader, Gruffi, trying to stop her.
In her quest for revenge, Ursa had nearly ended any chance of her clan flourishing again herself. Gruffi had been right. The horn was much too dangerous. Her anger had blinded her to the truth.
As Ursa continued to walk through the silent streets, her heart weighed down by the burden of her actions, she realized the depth of her mistakes. The consequences of her anger-fueled decisions were clear now, illuminated by the quiet introspection of the night.
What happened had been a stark reminder of the dangers of letting anger and hatred dictate her actions. Their refusal to embrace her desire for vengeance had left her feeling even more isolated, but in hindsight, she saw the wisdom in their words. Vengeance only led to more suffering, more destruction.
The moment when she had used the horn, heedless of the potential harm to Buddi and Sunni, was a stark realization of how far she had strayed from her values. In her desperation for revenge, she had endangered the lives of innocent cubs, including her own son.
The weight of her mistakes pressed heavily upon her shoulders as she wandered through the deserted city, each step a painful reminder of the path she had chosen. But amidst the regret and self-reproach, a glimmer of hope began to flicker in her heart.
Perhaps it wasn't too late to change course, to seek redemption for her actions. The Barbic clan may be dwindling, but there was still a chance to rebuild, to forge connections with other Gummi clans, to find a path forward that didn't lead to further destruction and despair.
With a newfound determination, Ursa resolved to make amends for her mistakes. She would seek forgiveness from the Glen Gummies, offer her aid in rescuing Buddi and Sunni, and work towards a future where peace and cooperation prevailed over anger and hatred.
As the first light of dawn began to break over the horizon, Ursa's steps became lighter, infused with a sense of purpose and hope. The journey ahead would be difficult, but she was ready to face it with humility and resolve. For the sake of her clan, for the sake of her son, and for the sake of all Gummi-kind, she would strive to be better, to choose love and compassion over anger and vengeance.
Indeed, Ursa recognized that changing her way of thinking would not be easy. The Barbic way had been ingrained in her for so long, shaped by the pain and loss her clan had endured at the hands of humans. Trusting humans again seemed like an insurmountable task, but she knew that holding onto her anger and hatred would only perpetuate the cycle of violence and suffering.
Making amends with the Glens was the first step towards forging a new path. It would require humility, openness, and a willingness to listen and learn from those whose perspectives differed from her own. Ursa understood that rebuilding trust would take time and effort, but it was a necessary step towards healing the rifts between their clans.
As she continued her journey through the deserted streets of Ursalia, Ursa resolved to approach the Glens with sincerity and honesty. She would acknowledge her mistakes, express her remorse, and demonstrate her commitment to finding common ground and working towards a future of peace and cooperation.
Though the road ahead would be challenging, Ursa was determined to walk it with courage and perseverance. For the sake of her clan, for the sake of Buddi, and for the sake of all Gummi-kind, she would strive to overcome the barriers that divided them and build a better, brighter future for generations to come.
