Work Text:
"Have you seen Poe?" Rey asks for what feels like the millionth time in the twenty minutes she's been searching for him.
He doesn't seem to be anywhere, which is frankly ridiculous.
She feels like she's searched the whole place three times.
Just as she's about to give up, she stumbles into the kitchens, finally finding the man she was looking for. He is a little occupied with Finn at the moment and Rey can't help smiling to herself.
~~~
Rey remembers meeting Finn well.
He was a stranded soul on Jakku, his ship having crash landed and he had a little droid that he wanted nothing to do with because he was a runaway from the Dark Side, trying to avoid participating in war.
She remembers distinctly how he hated anything to do with the war, how he wanted to just settle down on some outer rim planet and relax.
The only reason that he worked with her was because he felt some obligation to the pilot who helped him escape, the one who gave him his name.
The one that sank in the dunes of Jakku with the burning wreckage of the ship.
As they spent more time together, she realized that Finn's entire life was part of this war, taken at a young age and raised to become a Stormtrooper.
The guy, Poe she later learned, had been taken prisoner and in a desperate play at escape had trusted Finn who wanted nothing more than to leave after watching his best friend get murdered to satisfy the whims of one Kylo Ren.
Poe had, fortunately, been a pilot and they'd made a hasty escape with Poe helping give Finn his name.
As a thank you, Finn decided that he'd go on one last mission to deliver the droid to the Resistance and Rey had decided to help.
She watched as his heart sank and he got closer to the android, BB-8, and they became some sort of odd family. She had a feeling that they would stick together after all of this.
~~~
Rey watches an X-Wing land and the door opens revealing a young man wearing a thick helmet. She remembers watching as BB speeds past them, straight towards the pilot exiting the ship, a series of chirps and beeps expressing his excitement.
The pilot takes off his helmet, revealing a rather dashing young man. A huge smile overtakes his face as he leans down to reunite with the android.
She remembers how stunned Finn seemed to be for a second and it clicks.
This is the pilot.
This is the guy who helped him escape, gave him a name and a purpose and he was somehow still alive.
This was the guy who saved Finn's life and he was so excited.
She remembers the moment that a grins breaks out across his face and he takes off towards the man, running faster than she thinks she's ever seen him.
The two embrace tightly, so close for having only met each other once in the middle of a fight.
She watches as they converse, Finn more animated than she's seen for the entirety of their trip. She's amazed with how much love there seems to be between the two as BB looks up at them, rolling around like a child excited to see his dad again.
She watches as Poe bites his lip, a slight flush on his cheeks and Finn ducks his head and she suddenly understands why Finn seemed to miss him so much.
It was so clear to her.
~~~
She remembers watching fight after fight.
She remembers going to check on Finn when he's in a coma after Kylo attacked him, wanting to thank him and apologize to him and pray to whatever gods are listening to save him.
She remembers stopping just outside of the doorframe, watching as Poe grabs his hand, tears in his eyes as BB lays his head on Poe's thigh, a sort of comfort.
She remembers the quiet whispers and desperate pleas and she decides to give him some space to grieve.
~~~
These thoughts keep playing through her mind as she walks the opposite direction, smiling, as she leaves the two of them to their own devices, to finally explore their love for one another.
