“No?”

“No.”

Stolas’ heart once would have sunk into the depths of his stomach at the sound. Now he knew better. There was that twitch of his tail. The shift of his eyes from Stolas to the wall.

Once he would have believed this truly meant no. Maybe even he was playing hard to get. Yet Blitzo had the hardest time being honest. With himself, let alone anyone else. As much as he had promised to open up, sometimes Blitzo shut down over the oddest things.

Blitzo was overreacting. His no didn’t need to have so much venom.

It made Stolas curious.

They sat at the table, just the two of them. Loona had taken Octavia to a party with her friends. Stolas had spent the last hour between worry and excitement for her.

“Not even once?” Stolas tried.

“Ew. No. Never, Stolas. Stop asking. I won’t even kiss you after you’ve eaten that. What makes you think I’ll eat it?”

“You won’t kiss me after you know I’ve eaten it,” Stolas corrected.

Blitzo gagged. “Oh, come on!”

Stolas laughed! “I’d warn you about it darling, but sometimes you ambush me! Hasn’t turned you off before!”

With a scowl, Blitzo glared at the rats. “I’m not eating those.”

“I wasn’t even asking you to eat a whole one, but as you wish.” Stolas picked up one for himself. Blitzo had long stopped wincing or making faces when Stolas ate rats. “Never? They are quite good.”

“Never.”

“Not even with cheese?”

Blitz's mouth opened. Then he paused. Finally, he shut his eyes and shook his head. “No, no, no!” He grabbed his bowl of chips and noisily started to eat.

Ah, hesitation. Perhaps Stolas would melt some cheese on one and see if Blitzo would change his mind. If not, he would still eat it.

Nothing lost by trying.
