Work Text:

The music echoed around the ballroom, two figures dancing in the empty space. Their hands were intertwined and their bodies moving in sync with each other. Call it bittersweet for this was their last dance, yet they still enjoyed it all the same. They each had a smile on their face, even as the knowledge of this never being able to happen again was in the back of their minds. They both knew this was their last dance, their last chance to show their love for one another as the water was slowly rising. The city of Fontaine would be nothing other than an underwater city in less than twenty-four hours, making it out of the prophecy would be next to impossible. They both had accepted that only one would come out alive by the end of this whole ideal, only one, and it would be the one leading the dance. His long, white hair with the two blue streaks flowing behind him elegantly, one hand wrapped around the other’s waist and the other holding the other’s hand as they twirled and danced around the empty room.

“You’ve always been good at dancing, my love.” The white haired man said softly, his smile never once leaving his face. He lifted his arm and twirled the other person around before bringing them back close to his body, his free hand going back to their waist.

“Only the best taught me.” The other person chuckled, his (e/c) eyes staring adoringly at the white haired man. He followed the dance effortlessly, looking at his partner the whole time, only rarely looking away when he was twirled around. “Maybe we can dance together again in my next life, Neuvillette.” He hummed, his smile never once leaving.

“Maybe, Y/N.” Neuvillette answered, his own little smile growing slightly as he continued to dance around the ballroom with little care on if anyone might’ve been watching. All he cared about right now was having one last dance with his lover before everything was over, just enjoying and moving with the notes of the music. Neuvillette had chosen his and Y/N’s favourite song to dance to; he wanted their last proper show of love to be memorable.

This prophecy was bound to come true, Fontaine would be left underwater, and the hydro dragon was to be left alone again. Y/N could try as hard as he might to deny he would be leaving his beloved, but he knew deep down that it was all inevitable in the end. He would be gone, just as everyone else in Fontaine would be, and Neuvillette would be the only one left. Neuvillette would watch everyone he knew and grew to love disappear in a mere instant, the rising waters of Fontaine was a constant reminder of such a fact. He’d be watching Y/N, the love of his immortal life, go.

“We’ll find each other again, you just have to believe we will. It might not be for another hundred years, but don’t think I’ll be leaving you forever.” Y/N reassured, resting his head down on Neuvillettes chest and closing his eyes as the rest of the dance continued. He could hear the music slowly coming to a stop, how the instruments slowly started to fade out into nothingness until all that was left was Neuvillette and Y/N standing still in the middle of the ballroom, breathing slightly laboured from all the movement and smiles still on their faces.

“I love you,” Y/N began, opening his eyes again to look up at Neuvillette. “I always will.”

Neuvillette smiled down at him, his head tilting and eyes becoming somewhat half lidded. “I love you too, my love.” *He whispered, leaning down to place a chaste kiss onto his lips. “I’ll see you in another life, and we can do all of this again.”
