Work Text:

Denji had been staring at this girl, this pretty girl, for a while now. He didn't know her name. She walked around the school, always seemed so bothered. That's what he saw in her face. And while it didn't bother him that she was that way around others, he didn't want her to be bothered by him. He was going to get on her good side. Of course he was!

And he wasn't going to tell Yoshida. He was always so annoying. He just simply pissed him off. Insisting on “protecting” and “keeping” his privacy. But what did he know? He could do whatever the hell he wanted now that he was free. So, he was going to talk to this girl and hopefully become her boyfriend. He was confident. Man, he was chainsaw man.

But, the first time he approached her, she stared at him blankly. But it was quite mean. Like she was annoyed even feeling his presence.

“Can I help you?” Her tone sounding blank as well.

And here he was, dumbfounded at the sudden rudeness towards him. They didn't know each other, why was she moody?

“Yeah, what's your name,”

She scrunched her nose a bit. Just a bit. But still, she stared at him. “Why.. do you want to know that?” Her voice wavered, though not too noticeable.

He put his hands in his pockets and tilted his head to the side. “I just thought yer’ were pretty so..”

Almost immediately, her face flushed, eyebrows furrowed, and her lips turned to a straight line.

“What.. So? What..?” It looked as if she wanted to run away, and it looked like she was ready to do so. But she didn't. She stood there and stared at Denji. Now, she was dumbfounded.

“Yeah, so, what's yer’ name?”

She was pretty hesitant. Actually, very hesitant. But, this was the first time a boy had talked to her. He wasn't exactly her type, but he wasn't ugly either. So, she nodded.
“Asa. Asa Mitaka.”

“Denji.” He flashed a toothy grin at Asa.

And then the bell rang, they had to part ways. But before he had left, he told Asa one final thing.
“We could see each other after school, y’know?” And then turned away. Hands still in his pockets, he walked away slowly.

Asa touched her cheek, she was heating up. ‘Ohmigosh!!!!’ She squealed on the inside. Her lips now in a pout. She couldn't believe that had happened so quickly. And how easy it was for her. ‘He said I was pretty!! He wants to go on a date!!’

She started walking towards her class, people, couples, passing by. But as fast as she was annoyed, as fast was she in a good mood. Both her hands were in fists, she looked down, her face still a bit flushed. She even smiled, sheepishly, but she smiled.

As soon as she got to her classroom, she retorted back to her original self and sat down. And luckily for her, she sat in the back and next to a window. No one paid attention to her though, so it didn't really matter. When the teacher wasn't asking her to participate, she was daydreaming the whole period about Denji.

Usually things like this didn't get to her. Or well, she didn't let it get to her. But years and years of not having someone even talk to her out of genuine interest hurt and changed her. So she taught herself to be alone. Taught herself that she was better off this way and that she shouldn't ever let someone change that. But.. why was this boy.. person different?

If she was being honest.. his aura felt off. Was it good or bad? She didn't know. But what she did know was that she wanted to be in the Devil Hunter Club badly. She wanted to fit in. And so, she was going to investigate Denji. This was her other plan as well. Anything could be life changing.

And Denji approaching her meant something right? It should.. she was pretty darn cute after all.

‘...Why don't more people ask me out?’

She went through the whole day thinking about that particular thought. But, it didn't matter anymore, Denji was waiting for her by the school gate.

He looked relaxed. Hands yet again in his pockets, a toothy grin plastered on his face, and leaning next to the gate. Bag hanging from his left shoulder.

It kind of pissed her off.

She walked towards him and stared up at him. Though she now saw him as a bit too cocky, she couldn't help but feel flustered again. Her cheeks starting to heat up.
“W.. Where are we going?” Her voice sounding a bit more timid than usual.

He stood up straight and shrugged, “Dunno. I kinda asked you out on a whim.”

Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. ‘You can't be serious!’ Immediately her voice sounded mean again. Annoyed even! “You saw me out in the hallway and just decided right then and there that you wanted to go on a date?!”

His eyes widened as well. His mouth agape. He looked really dumb this way.
“No! What? I've been staring at you for awhile. I've thought you were pretty, okay?!” He defended himself, a bit too loud. It stunned her.

Asa stared at Denji. Denji stared at Asa. They were having a staring contest of sorts. But, there was no malicious intent in either of their eyes. Just pure confusion, shock, and embarrassment.

“Oh,” She laughed nervously, her cheeks turning a bright pink. “Thank you..”

“Yeah.. Yeah.. You're welcome..” His cheeks were a bright pink as well. A bit more than hers.

He started walking, she followed him. And as she caught up to him, he held out his hand. Nervously. He didn't look her way. She stared at him and his hand. Looking up and down. She was still hesitant.

‘Yeah, I'm charming!’

She took his hand confidently and walked beside each other, quietly. They still didn't know what they were going to or doing. But it didn't matter, they enjoyed each other's presence.
