Narcissa and Alice knew that Draco was scared of the dark. He didn't admit it anymore. He was almost eight and thanks to his father's parenting had been convinced he was too old for a fear like that. Narcissa had gotten into several shouting matches over that. Alice had wanted to join in too, but anytime she tried to comment on parenting matters in reference to Draco Lucius was an ass about it.
Draco's birthday was coming up, and Neville had insisted he get a present for Draco with his dad and not them. Alice didn't mind, neither did Narcissa really. She didn't see why Frank couldn't be involved, everything was friendly that side of things, if a little awkward at times.
They didn't know what Neville had gotten his brother, Frank assured them it was a good gift though. Draco had a boring more pureblood sort of party happening at his fathers on his actual birthday, but they had planned a more fun one at their home. Draco didn't have many friends he wanted to invite, so it was a more family focused event.
Alice made the cake, and her parents helped. They brought ice-cream too because Draco was going through a phase where he wanted ice-cream with everything. Thank god his step-mum's parents ran the most popular ice-cream shop in wizarding Britain. Andromeda brought Tonks, which was a little awkward as the age difference was so large between the cousins.
Trays of snacks were set out in the kitchen, and that was where they kept the presents. Tonks, despite being a grumpy teenager, was happy to entertain her cousins for a while in the living room. Neville insisted that his present be opened after everyone left, and Narcissa and Alice agreed.
It was mid afternoon that the extended family took their leave, and Draco was excited for Neville's gift. Neville was excited too, practically bouncing up and down as Alice brought the box through from the boys' playroom and sat it on the coffee table in front of Draco. After an encouraging nod from Neville, Draco tore into the wrapping paper.
"What is it?" Draco asked before he'd finished pulling the paper off the box.
"Unwrap it first," Neville said, bouncing in his seat slightly. Draco stuck his tongue out at him, but finished pulling the paper off. It really was just a box, and Draco lifted the lid. He peered into the box and grinned. Neville grinned as Draco pulled the thing from the box.
Narcissa recognised it. She'd seen it while she had been out shopping in Hogsmeade. The whole thing light up at night, and produced a soft glow. Just enough light to be able to see, but not too bright that it would interrupt sleep. There had been plenty of versions, but she wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Neville had gotten Draco one that was a badger and a snake on a rock.
"Wow," Draco said, holding it carefully. Neville grinned at him.
"It's like our mums," Neville said. Alice and Narcissa both grinned at that. The only person in the whole situation that didn't like both of them being mums to both boys was Lucius, but well Draco liked Alice as his mum.
"They're house animals from Hogwarts!" Draco said, bouncing slightly himself.
"And!" Neville said, still more excited than Draco. "It glows in the dark! It's so cool!" Narcissa watched Draco closely.
"Really?" he asked, still excited. Neville nodded.
"I'll show you tonight, it's so cool," he said. Both Alice and Narcissa felt pride well up in their hearts. Somehow they're very caring young son had found the perfect way to offer support to their other young son. Alice grabbed her camera from the shelf and took a picture of the boys holding the new night light and grinning at each other.
