Work Text:
Buck is still processing last night’s kiss. He tossed and turned all night overthinking all his previous friendships and relationships. Did he really miss all those signs for so long? Did he have feelings for all his male friends or was that just friendship? Did he even like women or was he just performing? No, he definitely likes women too.
As the sun was rising, he came to a conclusion, he finally understood he was missing a part of himself and what it was. All the pieces fell right into place. This day felt like the start of the rest of his life where he’d figured out who he was and accepted himself. All these years he felt like trudging water when it came to his relationships, now he is out of it and for the first time in his life he can breathe easily.
At 8 in the morning, he is knocking on Maddie’s door.
“Really Buck? I get one day off and I want to spend it with my baby and not listen to how my brother is jealous-” Maddie says in an annoyed voice as she opens the door. But the look on Bucks's face stops her mid-sentence. “What happened last night?” she asks as she lets him in.
Buck cannot control his emotions. There are soo many thoughts running through his head he doesn’t know how to put them into words. “I kissed Tommy” he blurts out. “Or rather he kissed me and I kissed him back”. He knows his sister loves him and will accept him no matter what but he still has knots in his stomach. He doesn’t know how she is going to respond.
“I don’t remember telling you to kiss and make up” is what Maddie says. Buck laughs and lets out the breath he didn’t know he was holding.
As they settle on the couch, Maddie turns to Buck her face serious “So do you want to talk about it?”
“I think I’m bisexual” Buck says. “And I’m going on my first date with a man this Saturday”
Maddie starts tearing up “Oh my god I love you and I’m so proud of you” she says while enveloping Buck in a hug. Buck is ecstatic and relieved as they both hold onto each other. As they let go and wipe their tears off their face Maddie is back to teasing him “So I was right all those years back when I told you about your crush on Eddie” Buck just laughs it off. He doesn’t want to open that box yet, he already has many other things to figure out. He just feels like he can’t stop smiling, he feels like everything is aligning for him and he finally has control over his life.
Just then they hear Chimney moving around in Jee-Yun’s room. “Do you want to tell him now?” Maddie asks Buck. He hesitates, he feels this whole thing is precious and wants to keep it for himself right now, obviously except Maddie.
As Chim comes out with the baby confused, Maddie changes the topic, “So you are good for babysitting Jee-Yun on Sunday?” “What is Sunday?” Chim is still confused as to why Buck is in their house at this early in the morning when their shift starts in an hour.
“Yeah sure I love to spend time with my favorite niece” Buck says taking Jee-Yun from Chim.
“This Sunday we’re going cake tasting” Maddie replies. “And Buck she is your only niece.”
“Buck that still doesn’t explain why you are here now?”. “I had some errands to run before the shift and I remembered I had to tell Maddie that I cleared the air with Tommy” Buck says giving a secret smile to his sister. “Anyway, I’ll be leaving now sorry I crashed your morning” He says giving Jee-Yun back to her father. “See you at the station Chim”.
“Did Buck finally become an adult” Buck can hear Chim say as the door closes. He realizes that’s how he feels too. He is finally an adult who can choose what he wants now.
