“Hey Dev, do you ever worry that we won’t be good parents?” Jake's voice was soft, carrying the weight of uncertainty as he gazed into Devon's eyes, seeking reassurance in the dimly lit room. The pair of them were laying on the bed with their heads nestled in each other's shoulders, but had yet to drift off. Devon's hand paused in its comforting motion through Jake's hair, his expression turning serious, ‘what do you mean?’ he said simply, ‘why ask all of a sudden?’
“I don't know… it’s just this Chucky white house mess has me thinking about the future, if we even make it anyways.” He turned his head slightly to look into Devon’s eye. There was such a tenderness in his gaze that something twisted painfully in Devon’s chest.
“Hey, don't say things like that, we're going to be fine and kill him for good. That's a promise.” Devon murmured, kissing his temple and gently stroking through Jake’s hair in an effort to comfort him.
“I just want him gone, I refuse to bring a child into our world where we always have to watch our backs 24/7 because of a killer doll terrorizing our lives. Also my dad wasn't exactly the best father figure so I’m scared of messing up.” Jake sighed closing his eyes again trying to find some sort of solace. The feeling of being helpless, knowing that he couldn’t save someone no matter how hard or fast he tried, made him feel so sick. “It's just a lot to deal with sometimes.”
“It is, that's why we should probably focus on what we can control now. In the present.” Devon answered, hoping to lighten the mood a bit, “Though to answer your question, when the time comes, you’ll be the greatest dad. I know that for a fact.” Devon finished with a gentle kiss.
“Thanks babe,” Jake smiled softly kissing him back as he opened his eyes again, “You’ll make a great dad too. You know I’ve always wanted to ask if you would be okay with naming the kid after my mom.” He paused briefly before finishing. “I just want to honor her in some way. If we ever have a girl that is.” Devon could tell by his tone that this was a touchy subject for Jake. He reached out, intertwining his fingers with Jake's, a silent reassurance passing between them.
"I'd be more than okay with that. Naming our child after your mom would be a wonderful tribute. She must have been an incredible person, just like you," He said softly, his eyes full of love and admiration for his partner. “Now go back to sleep before you start talking about marriage.We have a busy day ahead of us, and it won’t help anyone if we pass out while driving.” Devon added playfully nudging his boyfriend.
“We’re definitely getting rings after all this is over.” Jake yawned out, letting his body fall limp against his partner. “I love you.” He whispered softly as sleep began to overtake him. Devon stayed awake for another few minutes looking down at his sleeping partner and smiling lovingly before deciding to join him. “I love you the most.”
