Work Text:
Maybe he shouldn’t have left England. So much for staying and fighting for his home. Fair play. But then again, how do you fight for a city after it’s been hit by a nuclear bomb? Alfie had been through a lot, but he wasn’t going to ask Sandra to start their lives together in the midst of nuclear fallout.
So they’d finally moved to America. And for a while they were happy—the Pennyworths and the Waynes.
He didn’t give up on Pennyworth Security, not really. The Waynes needed a full-time bodyguard, and who else were they going to trust with that job?
If he’d only been there with them that night in Crime Alley, maybe they would still be alive.
Or maybe he’d have died, too, and then who would have been there to raise Sam and Bruce? Not Patricia Wayne, certainly. Not when she was in and out of rehab. Apparently after Patricia’s last O.D., Martha and Thomas had arranged for Alfie to be the kids’ legal guardian if anything should happen.
Would have been nice if they had given him a head’s up.
Mind, he loves them as if they were his own. (And he can still hear Sandra angrily asking him if Bruce is his before storming out.)
This just isn’t how he expected his life to go, s’all.
