Work Text:
Laying in bed had never felt so comfortable before. Rest had always felt short lived when his busy schedule had taken absolute priority of his time, but now things were different.
Byakuya slowly fluttered his eyes open, beams of light lighting up the messy brunet bedhead nestled on his shoulder. The blanket they were covered with when they had fallen asleep had long been pushed down to only cover below Byakuya’s knees. Makoto had nearly fully abandoned it, instead choosing to wrap himself around Byakuya for comfort. Byakuya looked down to watch Makoto’s arm rise and fall on his chest as he breathed, providing a comforting weight he wouldn't have been able to describe to his past self.
Despite his poor vision, he could see a slight glisten on the golden band displayed on Makoto’s ring finger, sending a warm feeling stemming from Byakuya’s heart that spread throughout his being. Never in his life did he ever expect to be able to settle down with someone he could love. It all felt so serene, as if time itself had decided to stop for just a little while to allow him to bask in this moment.
The coos of mourning doves sound out from outside, yet even they couldn't disturb his sleeping husband, who hadn’t so much as stirred this whole time. As carefully as he could, Byakuya brought his hand that Makoto was laying on to stroke his hair without disturbing him. It felt soft to the touch as he combed his fingers through it, feeling every tuft roll along his skin. It grounded him even more to the reality of this unexpected outcome.
Growing up a Togami, he fully expected his life to carry no emotion towards others, strictly business. The only act of affection was purely for the purpose of reproduction, he was expected to strip even that of its intended emotions. Things looked bleak, what he onced worked for now seemed so depressing. But it was Makoto Naegi of all people who showed him that, showed him that he was worth more than to be the mold they shoved him into. He could still be Togami without being forced into a life of purely function over experiences. When he had first gotten that invite to Hope’s Peak, he agreed only to attend to make business connections or find talents he could hire to grow the Togami conglomerate. Never did he think he would walk out instead with a new perspective on his life, nor did he expect to befriend the Ultimate Lucky Student and one day devote his life to him.
Now that brought him to this morning, basking in the morning sun with the love of his life acting as his voluntary weighted blanket. Byakuya brought his other hand to rest on his husband's thigh, which was currently splayed over his waist. It felt so perfect, everything did. He felt completely at peace, the most he’s ever felt in his life. While the world outside was springing to life to begin its day, Byakuya leaned his head onto Makoto’s as his eyes fluttered back shut. Life now feels so comfortable, there’s no longer a need to be afraid to rest. Before Makoto’s luck would have him wake up and doom this quiet moment, Byakuya let himself drift back off to sleep, the sounds from outside fading away as his consciousness slipped away.
