Booting up came naturally to him. Everything that came after, however, was not so simple. Seeing was hard. There were too many things to look at. Hearing was overwhelming, so much happening at one time. The slightest touch felt like fire. Speaking felt impossible. Had he known who God was at the time, he would have thanked Her for his lack of a nose. Choosing a display color was far easier to focus on than the world around him, so that's what he elected to do.
He made his choice and his screen blinked on, bright green.
Sudden loud noises, voices. He tilted his head to the side, staring out at the people. What were they doing? He had no words to attribute to their actions, no way to know what an emotion was. Not yet, at least. He would come to learn, those people he saw were cheering. They were excited. Angels, like him, comprised of organic materials, unlike him.
"Welcome to the world, Cyrix."
Cyrix? Was that him? They had been looking at him when they had said it. But that may not have meant anything. Was it him?
"Yes, that's you."
Oh! How did they know his name?
"We have been working on creating you for quite some time now. A name was decided long before construction began. You were quite the difficult creation."
"Oh. Sorry." What was that? Did that come from him?
"You've found your voice rather quick, impressive."
"What is a voice?"
"A voice is the sound living creatures make."
"Am I a living creature?"
"Not a creature, no, but you are very much alive."
He tilted his head to the side again, blinking at the person speaking to him. "Is that good?"
"Yes, being alive is very good."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Astrophel. I programmed you. I didn't realize you would be so...curious, when you first woke, or I would have programmed you with more knowledge."
"Oh. ...Sorry."
"Do not apologize, learning is part of life. It would be cruel to deprive you of that. Come, we must test your balance, teach you to walk." Astrophel stepped back, leading Cyrix off towards...somewhere, watching him struggle to figure out what to do.
"Uh..." He said, taking slightly unsteady steps forward. He stumbled and nearly fell a few times, but soon enough he was walking like a pro.
Astrophel smiled. "Celia did a good job on you."
"Thank you?"
"Thank her, when you meet her. You will soon. You have a lot ahead of you."
Chapter 2: Learning. (Unfinished)
Summary:
In which Cyrix has his first lesson about being an angel, his first encounter with a demon, and his first experience with fear.
This chapter is unfinished, but I didn't want to leave you guys with absolutely nothing else when I still have something left to give before I vanish lol. Just know, this was supposed to be far more information and exposition than it ended up being before I lost interest in it. Might come back eventually, might not. But until then, here's, like, half a chapter.
Chapter Text
“Come, come, we have much to do,” Astrophel said, leading the new”born” robot through the vast halls of AZICorp headquarters, through doors and around corners…many stops, gathering, giving, seeing, hearing, learning, “Now that you are awake, we need to teach you the “way of angels”. Right and wrong. It is customary for angels to be born with this knowledge, however we thought that it would be best to teach you ourselves.”
In the future, Cyrix will look back on this memory and understand all the red flags that those words carried. This is not the future, though, and Cyrix is naive. “Where are we going?”
”We have created a “classroom” of sorts. Effectively, you will learn their…our…ways, the same way humans teach heir young. You will be the sole student of this “school”.”
”Oh, okay!”
Once they reached the "classroom", Cyrix felt as Astrophel pushed him inside and locked the door behind him. The room was dark, except for a projector sending light to one side of the wall. There was a single desk in the center, with Cyrix's name on it...literally.
All this should have made him uneasy, but it barely registered to him. He just thought this was normal. Besides, he still had yet to conceptualize fear.
“Welcome to class, new kid.” Someone said from behind him, and he turned around, only to find no one there.
“Hello?”
“I’ll be your teacher today.” Behind him, again. He turned around, again, only to find no one, again.
“Who’s there?”
“My name’s unimportant. Just know, I’m not one of your angel buddies. I’m a demon, straight from Hell.”
“What’s hell? What are demons?”
“Oh my fucking god, you really don’t know shit, do you? Guess we’d better get started.” Cyrix could practically hear the grin on the demon's face without even having to see her.
”Oh- Okay?”
“How-To-Angel Intro Lesson One: You need to know who God is. God created life, and death, and light, and dark, and good and evil and yadda yadda yadda, all that jazz. She made everything. She also planned out every single event to ever happen. Directly and indirectly, she’s the reason you exist, the reason I exist, the reason anything exists at all. She’s real important to you and yours.”
The projector finally displayed an image.
A glowing mass, incomprehensible, no features, only light.
"What's that?"
"That's God, you dumbass. You know, God, the creator of all, the reason you exist, and the reason I was put into this stupid classroom to teach you what you should have already known the second you woke up!” Cyrix flinched at the tone of the demon’s voice, finally feeling fear for the first time. He shrunk in on himself a little as he listened to the demon mutter to herself for a moment, before she continued on, “Anyways! This is the closest thing we have to a picture of God. It's said she made humans in her image, but that's actually false. God has no physical form, therefore he has no appearance. She just kinda...is."
"H…How do you know if she's there?"
"She always is, or so its said. You and yours all seem to think so, at least. We demons think she doesn't pay attention, or just doesn't care enough to be here at all."
"Who is right?"
"Nobody knows. Best to behave just in case, feather-brain. You don't want to fall , after all."
The earlier sense of fear grew, and Cyrix made a nervous sound before speaking up again, "..What is...falling?"
"Falling is what happens when an angel does too many bad things while God is paying attention. Which brings us to our next lesson, vices and virtues. Virtues are good, and vices are bad. You know what good and bad is, right?"
"...." Cyrix shook his head.
"Ugh, okay. Do you know what morals are?”
“Sorta?”
“Sorta is good enough. Good is considered things that are morally right, approved of by society, things that benefit everyone. Bad is the opposite, morally wrong, disapproved, so on and so forth. Bad is also considered the absence of good, but that also leads into neutral territory, which is something that’s neither good nor bad. Angels are always morally right, so angels are always good, unless they’re corrupted angels, which typically tend to be morally in the wrong, so they’re bad. Demons like me also tend to be morally in the wrong.”
“So demons are bad?”
“Right. Gotta hand it to ya, you catch on pretty quick, kid. Though, just like angels can be bad sometimes, demons can be good sometimes. It’s rarer for that, though.”
