Work Text:
Luz seems kinda nervous on this date. I wonder why though; it's not like my concealment stone blocks my magic or could fall off, so I can still defend us if necessary, and otherwise look like any other human. Maybe it's because this is our first time having a date outside of Gravesfield. I'll try to get her more relaxed, I know how high-strung my girlfriend can get sometimes.
Strange, the waiter in this restaurant is rather unfriendly. She's maintaining an air of professionalism, but I can tell she's looking at us with disdain. Perhaps she was born into a rich family, and is now being forced to work a low-level job to learn work ethic or because they went bankrupt? Then again, I'm also noticing some nearby people looking at us the same way... how strange.
We were eating our meal in peace when the manager of this establishment suddenly came up to our table and asked us to leave because we were making people uncomfortable.
"We'll leave when we finish eating," I told him. He left, but I got the feeling this wasn't the end of it.
It wasn't.
I heard a golden-haired lady around my mother's age sitting at a nearby table yelling at the manager. I'm not sure what she was saying, but it was something about "deviants" and "sinners". I could tell Luz was trying really hard to ignore it.
"Luz, are you ok?" I asked Luz. She assured me she was fine, but I knew that almost always meant she wasn't fine. I also knew it meant she wasn't ready to talk about whatever was troubling her, so I let it go. She'll tell me when she's ready.
Suddenly, a hand slammed on our table. It was the lady from the nearby table, staring at me with a piercing glare and burning anger. How strange, perhaps I resemble someone who offended her. I put on the professional persona I'd honed throughout my childhood.
"How may I help you, madam?" I asked her, completely unprepared for what I was about to unleash.
"There are people who are trying to eat their meals in peace here, so take your disgusting sexual behavior and leave this place!" she snarled.
I was completely confused. I'd been doing nothing but eating my meal, just like everyone else here.
"Madam, my girlfriend and I are also trying to eat in peace. So if you would please do whatever you're trying to do elsewhere-"
She slapped me. She fucking BACKHANDED me. To hell with diplomatic, I'm kicking this bitch's ass tonight.
I stood up, towering over her. Rolling up my sleeves, I grabbed the woman by the collar and raised her to eye level. One last chance.
"Explain yourself."
She scoffed. She fucking scoffed, like I wasn't literally a moment's notice away from tossing her all the way into the kitchen. "You are in an unholy relationship with another woman. You and your so-called 'girlfriend' are sinners in the eyes of God and are destined for damnation."
I guess I'm missing some context that humans are supposed to know about. "Suppose I'm from out of town, who's this 'God' you speak of?"
"He is the creator of the heavens and the earth, the all-knowing Almighty Lord of All Creation. And he forbids homosexuality."
This woman is a fucking idiot. "Right, I've heard enough. Now fuck off and die."
I threw her all the way across the restaurant, put payment for our meal on the table, and carried Luz out of there.
"Wow batata, you were so awesome back there!"
I sipped my wine. "That's because I was defending my girlfriend."
We'd gone to another restaurant, and luckily the people there were nicer about our relationship. Little did I know, it wasn't over yet.
After finishing our second dinner to make up for the previous unfinished dinner, Luz and I were walking down the street when she just so happened to be kissing my cheek as we passed by a preacher.
"Excuse me, misses," he said as he walked up from behind us, "but I noticed you were partaking in sinful behavior. As it so happens, our church is holding a camp to help people like you purge yourselves of the evil spirits causing you to behave this way."
He held out a pamphlet, seemingly expecting us to take it. Luz had already explained everything I needed to know about Christianity and homophobia, so I knew exactly what this was: a conversion camp. I took the pamphlet, tore it up, and held up a middle finger at the old man.
"Fuck off."
As I walked away, he shot back with a "God bless you!" as he bent down to pick up the shreds of paper.
Luz looked at me, a little worried. "You know, Amity, you didn't have to be so mean to him. I mean yeah, he was completely in the wrong for the conversion camp and all, but he wasn't being all shouty like the woman from earlier."
I sighed. "Yeah Luz, you're right... as always."
She kissed me and we went home, silently promising each other to never have dates in the human realm ever again. Years later, when we got married, Luz moved to the Boiling Isles permanently and we built our family here.
