Chapter 1: Silence and Solitude

Chapter Text

A night, awfully quiet, spread over every brick and tile of these streets which Joke named home. Each creak and tap of the foot was noticeable to even the farthest ears. In this silence, dread enveloped the black spy. Not the suspense of his rival’s violence, but fear. Truly, one would find his path, and notice his weariness. He would be overcome as swiftly as he was sighted, or so he thought. Still, he had to keep moving, despite his body’s cries for rest.

After a walk which seemed to last hours, Joke found his destination, the humbling doorsteps of a house differing from his own. Breaking the stillness of his position, he briskly rung the doorbell. A minute passed with no answer. Another ring. This wait only panicked Joke further. Finally, footsteps could be heard from the other side. The door creaked as it opened, almost as a sudden greeting to him. The person inside was his adversary, Dagger.

Without a word, Joke was welcomed in. His eyes wandered, searching for a moment of solitude. Dagger would have to break the silence.

“You do realize you’re allowed to lay down, right?” He teased, closing the door behind him while still focused on Joke.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll get to it.”

Joke’s voice had been reduced to a disoriented mutter. He trudged his way throughout the living room, eventually finding rest on Dagger’s couch. As the thought reached his mind, Dagger spoke once more.

“Should be thankful that I’m even up this late. At least tell me beforehand if you’re going to wander up here at 3AM of all times.” His eyes scanned the fatigued man. “You’re all suited up and everything.” He ribbed, just as Joke set his hat down.

His tone of voice became calmer, still questioning. “Look, as much as you aren’t saying anything, I know something’s up.”

“…I only wanted to see you again; that’s it.”

“Did you even get any sleep?”

Joke had no response, only staring at Dagger with blank eyes. He watched as the white spy moved closer towards him, taking a seat beside him. Dagger had caught sight of Joke’s surrender, as his body quivered. There was no need to say another word.

Dagger grasped Joke’s hands, cold compared to his own. Rather than make another move, he kept a still state, his thumbs occasionally tracing the top of Joke’s hands. Joke felt his body lose its stiffness, his gaze softening. His voice quaked once again.

“Thank you.”

Dagger merely shrugged. “No need to thank me. Still confused by everything, though.” He peered back at Joke’s face, noticing his struggle to keep himself awake. He simply paused. Shifting himself towards the black spy, he gave him a small kiss on the forehead. His recipient murmured in exhausted glee, attempting to reciprocate. In this attempt, he only rammed into Dagger’s chin. This small movement resulted in a giggle, Dagger watching as Joke slowly slipped out of consciousness. He fell asleep just as he laid, enraptured by the love of his peculiar partner.

The simple sin of being with him was his alone, but one he would stay with until all else falls apart.
