Dazai realized something now.
He should have realized a long time ago.
Mori, of course, wanted him back in Yokohama.
But he knew now… how could he be punished if nobody at the mafia knew where he was?
Now, Dazai had wanted to stay at Hogwarts. It felt silly to admit to himself, but it was true.
He wanted Snape and Pomfrey and their remedial lessons.
He wanted the Hell’s Hounds and their organized pranks.
He wanted the magic. He wanted the life he could have had if he’d just been more like them.
But that wasn’t going to be the case, obviously. It was clear that Mori meant business— and with the port mafia being involved in the “government” of the wizarding world now, they’d find Hogwarts easily.
If Dazai stayed here, everyone would die.
He couldn’t let that happen.
As weird and gross as it was, Dazai had— yes— gotten attached. Too attached to stay with them.
Attached enough to know that.
Dazai took one last glance at the towering castle, and looked into his bag. He’d managed to nick one thing off of everyone— the World’s Okayest Professor mug from Snape, and various trinkets from everyone else. Dazai hoped they wouldn’t miss those items too much.
He hoped they wouldn’t miss him too much, too, but he probably didn’t have to worry about that too much.
Dazai squeezed the strap of the bag, and mouthed a silent “Good-bye.”
He began to walk.
