Work Text:
Porky was sitting on a familiar blue sheeted bed, in a familiar blue and green painted room. He knew immediately where he was - he was in Ness’s room, a place he hadn’t seen in a while but could remember clearly. Next to the bed was a lamp, which dully illuminated the room. There was one open window that filled the warm house with a nice cooling breeze.
Even with the sparse amount of light, Porky could tell what the room looked like. In fact, he probably knew Ness’s room better than his own. His room had white walls and… was it a purple carpet? No, the beds were purple, as Picky wanted. Yeah, if Porky got to choose, he’d choose a blue blanket just like Ness’s bed. There was no bookshelf either - Aloyisius said kids like Porky don’t need to be reading, so Porky always had to borrow Ness’s comics. Of course, he didn’t always return them. Or ever. There might’ve been a flower or something next to his bed too, he wasn’t really sure…
“Did you forget to bring pajamas? You can borrow one of my pairs.” Offered Ness, who was now standing in front of Porky. He held a pair of blue and white striped pajamas, identical to his own.
“I didn’t forget! I like sleeping in my normal clothes.” Said Porky.
“Well okay, if you want to be uncomfortable and lose your circulation,” Ness shrugged, dropping the extra pajamas onto the floor and plopping onto the bed next to Porky.
“At least I don’t look as stupid as you do,” said Porky, pointing to Ness’s silly button-up. “And don’t put your clothes on the floor, your mom will get mad!”
“Says you,” Ness teased, scooting up. “I’ve seen what a pig sty your room can be.”
“Psssh, Picky cleans it up for me, mom and Dad never find out!” Porky then shuddered. “Except for that one time.”
“Yeah, whatever,” Ness rolled his eyes, smiling. “Also, don’t hog the bed sheets when we sleep this time.”
“Hey, I can’t control what my body does while unconscious!”
“If you say so. Goodnight, Porky.”
“Wait, no!” Ness clicked the lamp off.
“Ness, I don’t want to go to bed yet, I want to talk more!” Porky continued, taking a moment to pause and acknowledge the sticky blue paint splatters now on his skin and clothes before looking back at his friend.
Ness was facing the other way now - Porky saw him flinch slightly, but not respond.
“We’re still friends right?”
“...”
“Please just say something.”
“...”
Porky turned the other way, arms crossed. “Fine. I don’t want to waste my time on you anyway.” And now he was wearing his glossy red and black suit, custom-tailored and tight on him, uncomfortable.
Ness spoke, his voice softer but more strained than usual. “We could be friends again if you let us.”
“Then why wouldn’t you talk to me?”
“I thought you’d learn something! I didn’t think you’d become worse!”
“I’ve always been like this! That’s why I wasn’t in the prophecy and why I didn’t want to be. This is who I was meant to be and who I was always gonna be! You… you can’t hate me just because I was made this way!” His voice broke at the last word from his heart beating so fast, so he stopped talking and started hyperventilating, hoping that somehow Ness wouldn’t notice his ragged breathing.
“You weren’t always like this.” Said Ness who was now facing Porky - his eyebrows were furrowed and his eyes were squinted, he looked as if he needed to cry too. “And you didn’t have to be in my story. You could’ve just stayed home and when I got back from my adventure I would’ve been happy to see you.”
Porky swallowed. “Would you forgive me if I apologized now?” He asked, voice shaky.
The darkness of the room greeted Porky as he jolted awake. He stared ahead at the wall in front of him, taking a moment to process his dream and then touching his cheek. ‘Why’s it wet? I don’t care.’
“Would you forgive me?” yeah right. I don’t need Ness’s forgiveness or his pity. I’m better off now. I don’t need him. Stupid dream, and stupid Ness.’
I don’t care.’
Porky didn’t sleep for the rest of the night.
