Work Text:
Everyone dreams of living in a small town where you can walk down Main Street with no worries about who you might run into because everyone knows everybody and everyone has their routines down to a science whether it be having a meal at the local diner or catching up with a long lost friend in the park while sipping on coffee or if it’s just having a quiet night in with a pint of your favorite ice cream while watching your comfort show on Netflix. It’s the kind of thing you only hear about in books or see in the movies.
Not for Trina Robinson. This was her reality and she wouldn’t have it any other way - except maybe having her first love back in her life.
Spencer Cassadine was the love of her life and let’s be real - he still is and he always will be. Nothing will ever change that, no matter how many years have passed.
Let me start from the beginning. The Ashford and the Cassadine family have in a sense grown up together - now that doesn’t mean they were childhood best friends but Nikolas and Portia have known each other their entire adult lives so it was only natural for their children to grow up side by side and that they did. Of course by the time both of them had gotten older and developed silly little crushes, they both tried everything in their power not to give in to the feelings they both ultimately felt. They were small town meant to be and everyone knew it except for Spencer and Trina and both of their parents approved of the relationship - they had a front row seat to it all and Nikolas loved Trina and Portia loved Spencer. They both could see how happy they made one another.
Even when they were in a relationship, they always found a way to be together. Hanging out at each other's houses, the park or the diner, the both of them always seemed to be by the other's side, other people be damned. When there was another party involved, if Spencer and Trina were together they were the only people in the world almost as if the lights were out and there was a spotlight on the two of them. Spencer realized that he thought of Trina as more than a friend for some time now and he knew he had to let his feelings be known. The next time I’m alone with her.
It was a few nights later when Spencer saw her again. He missed this. The quality time he got with his best friend (which he hoped would become more by the end of the night) was something he often took for granted but not seeing her for a few days made him realize how much he needed her, her light, in his orbit. The plan was to go get ice cream at the diner and then go back to his place to watch their favorite movie - a long-standing tradition of theirs.
Trina got to the square earlier than the agreed upon meet up time - they always walked to the diner together to get their ice cream - because she was always told “If you’re on time, you’re late.” plus the alone time allows for Trina to decompress after a stressful day. Let’s be real: Trina lost track of time because the next thing she knows Spencer is standing in front of her waiting for a reply “Earth to Trina? Hello?”
“Spencer! I’m so sorry. I’m here. I’m ready for ice cream and movie night with my best friend.”
“So am I.” He said with a big smile because he knew what the rest of the night was going to entail.
Back at Spencer’s place, all he could think about was his upcoming confession. No better time than now.
“Trina, I have something to tell you.” He waits patiently yet anxiously. She mutes the movie and turns to face him. “It’s actually more of a confession but if I don’t say it now I won’t say it at all.” he says as he starts to fidget with his fingers, unable to look her in the eyes because he’s scared about her response. Trina notices and takes his hand in hers, giving him the reassurance he didn’t know he needed to continue. “It’s you. It’s always been you.” he says as confidently as he can.
“What?” she says, confused as to where this is coming from, but as he looks into her eyes, he’s grateful to know that this confession is unwelcomed so he continues. “The only person I have ever loved has been you. It will only ever be you and granted I’ve had relationships before but you’ve been by my side through all of them and every time I tried to make myself feel for them what I feel for you but i just couldn’t and honestly I didn’t want to because I knew that from the time that I realized what love was, that was all I have ever felt for you. It started out as a best friend type of love but over the years it grew into more and they say the best type of love is falling in love with your best friend and that’s what I did.” He grabbed her hands tighter than before and looked her in the eyes as he finished his confession. “Your handprint is on my heart and I’ve always known it was meant to be permanent.”
A smile crept onto her face “About damn time, Cassadine.”
From that day on, they were inseparable. They burned up the road between his place and hers when they ultimately had to let each other go, even though that is the last thing either of them wanted to do. If it were up to them, they would never be apart and as soon as they kissed each other goodnight in the driveway, they would be on the phone saying goodnight one more time and they would say “love you, miss you, mean it. I’ll see you when I’m dreaming and I can’t wait until we can hold each other again but until then I’ll be counting down the minutes. Heck, I’m climbing up the walls because I want and need your kiss. I love you. I miss you. I mean it.”
Graduation came and that meant Spencer and Trina were going to have to do the long distance thing. “I want you to be happy and hey, listening 200 miles is nothing. We can get through this because I can promise you one thing, Trina Robinson, my heart is never going to give up on yours.” He had said it so matter of factly there was no reason for her to waver because this was her Spencer. They had both waited so long to be together. This couldn’t be the end.
As the semester progressed, the time got longer between Spencer and Trina’s phone calls - what once were nightly phone calls talking about everything and nothing at the same time was now rushed. It was the summarized versions of months worth of conversations. Both wondered what had happened to love you, miss you, mean it.
Years went by and the pages in both Spencer and Trina’s story got turned but neither forgot about the other. Late one night out of the blue, both Trina and Spencer’s phones lit up with each other's names and honestly their hearts lit up too in that moment.
“Hello?” they both said.
“Spencer, I know this is out of the blue since we haven’t talked in a while but I don’t know about you but I love you. I miss you. I mean it. I still see you when I’m dreaming and I just wish you could hold me again. I’ve been counting down the minutes, climbing up the walls not being able to be your girl because I love you. I miss you. I mean it. Forever.
