“Duck!”
“Where?”
“No I mean take cover!”
“Where exactly!”
“I dunno! Anywhere else but where the bullets are flying from right now!!!”
“There is no other place here, this is an open plane! There is no where to hide or duck or whatever! ”
“Well, look for something, anything! A hole in the ground if you can find it!”
“Um… karking hell!” Glancing desperately around themselves as there really was nothing or no place to hide in… “Over there, some bushes and large rocks! That looks as good as any from where I’m standing!”
“Then that is where we’ll go!”
The two rushed to the general direction of what seemed like a safe place. Or at least a place where they weren’t the literal sitting ducks. The two troopers diving in between the rocks and shrubbery hoping it would give them some cover for a while at least until they could be picked up. Landing onto the dirty ground with a thud.
“You call this, safe?”
“Well you said to look for something, some cover. Any cover! This is it, love!”
“Fine. Fine. Let’s just, keep our heads down until they realise where we are.”
And so, they lay there, under the bushes, the green foliage. Listening, waiting, biding their time. In the end the firing stopping, thankfully. Some noises in the distance still heard as clearly their enemy having lost them and perhaps even searching for them for a while. At least for now they were unfound, safe. And so, soon enough, there was nothing but the wind and some birds in the trees heard on top of them. Their enemy, relenting and having left the fight.
“Are they gone?”
“Yeah, seems that way.”
“Good, good.”
Getting up and into a sitting position, dusting off the dirt accumulated from diving into the ground just before. Scanning the immediate are with the binocs, but there was nothing or no one there.
“Well, that was close.”
“Yeah. Some rescue you pulled for us there.”
“Hey, I wasn’t prepared for a full on assault.”
Waxer just had to chuckle, seeing the dirt on Boil’s face making him look so cute. Not to mention the sour expression his partner had making the overall appeal, well, appealing. Waxer always having had a thing for the more sour faced Boil. Well, some times.
Waxer reached out to wipe off the dark streak from his cheek just then, Boil leaning into the touch. Indeed, the sour mood being just a front. Boil always trusting in Waxer and what they did. The two of them.
“Thanks.” Boil’s voice was much softer. “And sorry, ya know, for the short warning. I didn’t know whom else to call.”
“You did the right thing love. You know I will always be there for you.”
“Yeah, I know. And I am glad you did. Come save my shebs and all. Even if there was no plan at all.”
Boil felt better now, that they were perhaps safe for the time being. But most of all, he was with Waxer again. Something always bringing him comfort no matter how dire the situation just might have been.
Despite Boil having landed in trouble and calling Waxer out of the blue, having been AWOL for a moment there as far as his partner was concerned. Still, whenever either of them was in trouble, no matter the time or place, the other would come a running.
Waxer smiled at Boil, the two still sitting in the dirt. But, so far, their enemy, those firing at them had left them alone which was always a good sign. Something curious for sure, but now was not the time to think of the whys and whos, rather concentrate on getting the heck out of Dodge. And getting Boil out of harms way. Waxer already having thought ahead.
“I sent a ping out, so we should get a pickup soon enough.”
“Well then, we might as well get comfortable while we wait.”
“Yeah, I don’t think it’s safe out there to just wander off.” Waxer paused and looked up at Boil. “So who were they?” He just had to ask, having wondered himself.
“Hired mercenaries. They were here to take me off the table, so to speak.”
“So, I guess the negotiations aren’t going too well then.”
“You might say that. There is just so much…of everything.” Boil threw his arms in the air rather theatrically, “well, guess my test was wrong after all, for being the best one for the job and all.” Boil sounded positively defeated.
“No sweetie, it wasn’t. What I heard on the chatter, this is a really tough gig and they should have sent out someone with more experience. But, you managed to do a helluva job so far. Guess you rally should take a break from the negotiations. Come back after they cool down?”
Waxer was being bias of course, wanting this partner back. But it was also a valid point. These people on this planet, they were certainly hotheaded, the lot of them form what Waxer had seen.
“Maybe.” Boil sounded doubtful though. “But I am glad to see you.” He leaned in to Waxer as no amount of dirt, being chased by mercenaries nor an uncertain status of their pickup could keep Boil from touching Waxer especially after weeks of not seeing each other. “Now, can you please kiss me. I have been starving for a long time!”
Waxer laughed out loud. But, never the one to be denying a request like proper soldier he totally was. Well, it had nothing to do with soldiering nor it being an order. Rather his partner requesting some lovin’.
Leaning into the kiss, deepening it as soon as their lips met. The love, the passion, the distance between them for far too long having not to mention having missed Boil… all of the emotions poured into that one single kiss.Their hands moving of their own accord, touching the other for the first time in a longest of whiles…
“Wax, come in Wax, this is Fives.”
Pulling away reluctantly from each other, their foreheads touching.
“Saved by the bell maybe?”
“Nah, just bad timing, is all.”
“Well, we can always make this up when we get back home, right love?”
“Indeed sweetheart. Let’s make things right between us, real proper like. When we’re back home.”
A promise the both of them intended to keep.
