Summary:

Only survivors Kate and Jamie have a 4AM phone discussion

Work Text:

It's been 3 months since that night of hell at the hands of Granthem Du'Met, and it's still all Kate can think about. She thinks about everyone lost, of Charlie, Erin, and especially Mark. Mark, who had been killed right in front of her, who she'd failed to save. No one would ever blame Kate for what happened besides herself, but that doesn't stop her from feeling horrible about it. At what she guesses is around 4AM, Kate's racing mind won't allow her to sleep. She decides to try journaling, but can't collect her thoughts enough to get anything down. As she's staring down at a blank page, she hears her phone ring.

It makes a chiming sound only once before going silent. She doesn't have to look to know it was Jamie. Jamie is the only other surviving crew member, her rivalry with Kate became a fast friendship after what they endured.
Kate made a promise to be there for Jamie, that they would get through this together. Remembering that promise is a strong source of motivation for Kate. She tries not to wonder too much about how things would be different if there was no one else left. She calls Jamie right back.

"I wish you'd quit that already," Kate begins as soon as Jamie answers, "it's like ringing my doorbell and then running away." "That's the idea." Jamie replies, sounding amused. "How delightfully immature." Kate says. There's a small pause before she asks, "Why'd you call at this hour?" "I figured you'd be awake," Jamie responds, "you've been posting at weird times lately." "You might as well follow me at this p-" Kate starts to remark. Jamie cuts her off with "Not gonna happen." "You're so stubborn," Kate sighs, "and you know I didn't mean that when I asked why you called. What's on your mind?" she asks in a decidedly gentler tone. There's another pause. "I had this dream," Jamie almost whispers, "about Erin."

Kate wasn't expecting that. "I'm listening." she says. Jamie goes on, "It wasn't a nightmare. It was me and her, talking and laughing like we usually would. It felt normal in the best way possible. After we said goodbye, I woke up feeling like complete shit. It just served as a reminder that..we'll never do that again." She chokes up at the end. Kate wants nothing more than to pull her into a hug. "I'm so sorry, Jamie." is all she manages to tell her. "Thanks for listening." Jamie says, "You're the only one I don't mind telling about this kind of thing; nobody else seems to get it like you do." "It's no problem, really." Kate replies, "Like I told you, I'm here. Don't be a stranger." "I won't." Jamie affirms, "I should try and get back to sleep now." she takes a moment before choosing her next words "Take it easy, okay? Good night." Kate decides that, since Jamie is doing better now, it's a decent time to bug her a little. "Isn't it technically morni-" Kate starts to say. Jamie sees this coming and hangs up before she can finish. Kate laughs to herself. It was good for her to hear Jamie's voice, her mind is much clearer. She knows she should try to get some sleep too, but not just yet, since now she has something to write about.
