It can't be easy can it?

Summary:

Yuri isn't ecstatic at the prospect of having a large grand wedding in the castle. But he can't exactly keep a low profile when he's the commandant's partner. So despite his unease he goes along with it anyways. At least he and Flynn will be together. That's all that matters.

Work Text:

Yuri was annoyed, mad, and frankly quite done with the day. Such a shame because he initially had a lovely morning after he had breakfast with his fiancé. However, once he had gotten the big “news” from Patty he was more than ticked off. The fact that he was more or less being forced into a huge wedding, a matrimony that he wanted to keep quiet. He was never one for huge celebrations and just the idea of having to go through this ceremony made him a little dizzy. It wasn’t as if he didn’t want to have a beautiful wedding with his beloved, he did. But… but not with thousands of people watching them.

The very idea of it made his stomach curdle a little. The worst part was Flynn hadn’t stepped in at all to dissipate the idea. In fact, he hadn’t said anything at all. Yuri nearly gritted his teeth as he walked back to their room. He was still with brave Vesperia, but since Flynn had proposed several months ago, they were in the process of getting everyone moved to the castle. They were busy and a lot had happened in just a couple short months.

The last thing Yuri wanted was a giant wedding publicly announcing their feelings to one another. And worse, Sodia would be present. Yuri had never said a word of the Zaude incident to Flynn, and he didn’t intend to. He had to be careful to conceal the scar around his significant other. He rarely took off his shirt around the blonde, or when he was coming out of the washroom he made sure to keep the towel wrapped tightly around his stomach.

Then again… he couldn’t hide it forever. He knew that for sure. For now, all he could do was just hide it, and avoid Sodia. While waiting for the inevitable. He’d have to put that aside for now. At the moment he had to figure out if there was anyway he could knock this wedding down to just a very personal, small, private ceremony. And nothing else. He soon went on the hunt for his fiancé.

---

“Yuri!” Flynn jumped as his partner practically barged into the room with Repede at his side, looking equally as annoyed. Repede never left Yuri’s side anymore when they were in the castle. He loved Flynn of course, but Yuri was his one and only. Yuri eyed his fiancé first, and then Sodia who sat right in front of him. Yuri had no issue glaring at her, in an attempt to scare her off. His patience was running thin today.

“Flynn. A word. Please?”

“Is it- urgent? I’m in the middle of a meeting-“

“Now, Flynn.”

The other went quiet, eyeing Yuri neutrally before turning back to Sodia.

“Sodia, do you mind if we resume this later?”

The young woman looked up at him, somewhat nervously before nodding.

“Uh- no, not at all.” The young woman stood up, and quickly left the room, not even glancing in Yuri’s direction, given their awkward history (because you know she tried killing him and all.)

As soon as she left Yuri looked back in Flynn’s direction and made his way over to him.

“So… what is so urgent my dear?” Flynn asked, as Yuri sat down in front of him. He perched his head on his hand, staring almost dreamily into his fiance’s eyes. That almost made Yuri wilt. For a moment, he almost just wanted to say to hell with the whole thing and just forget it. But then he pictured himself walking in front of hundreds of people down the aisle. And he sighed.

“Flynn, I don’t suppose there’s any way we can have a small, quiet, private wedding, can we?” Yuri asked. Okay, he wasn’t going to come straight at the other, better to be calm. Still, he was hoping there was some way to have a quiet ceremony.

Flynn raised a brow.

“What do you-“ but then his expression went still. “Oh. That.” Yuri eyed the other, hesitantly, waiting for some type of response.

“Well… I’m afraid the plans are already underway.” The blonde answered. A tense silence fell over them as Yuri let the answer sink in.

“Listen, I know your upset. I know you said you wanted to keep things on the down low…” Flynn sighed, but still retained his composure.

“But you have to realize, you’re the soon-to-be commandant’s husband now. Your profile won’t exactly be private like it used to be.” Yuri wanted to object but he stopped when he thought about it. Flynn wasn’t wrong. Yuri was his partner, significant other, his lover. And soon they’d be married, with gold rings on their fingers as proof. Not that they ever needed proof for their feelings towards each other.

“… Whose exactly pulling the strings here?” Yuri questioned, leaning back in his chair.

“Do you plan on singling her out?”

“Her?”

“It’s Princess Estelleise.”

Yuri raised his brows. Oh. This suddenly made a lot of sense.

“Estelle? She- she’s in on this too?”

“In charge of the whole thing actually. She was so happy when I told her I was going to propose to you. Then when you told her, afterwards, she immediately asked her seamstresses to get to work on your outfit for the wedding.” Flynn paused for a moment, fiddling with the loose string on his uniform.

“And then it just went on from there. You know how she is.”

Yuri wanted to object but he knew what Flynn meant. Estelle was so ecstatic. He was kind of surprised she made no notion of her knowing of their engagement. She wanted to surprise them. Yuri couldn’t even feel slightly annoyed. Yes going through a huge ceremony was annoying, but it was either do that or break Estelle’s heart.

“She’s been working on many sketches. Even Patty and Karol have been helping her too.” Flynn paused for a moment, before a small smile appeared on his face.

“Patty wanted you to wear a dress. A long pretty white dress with florals sewn on them. Karol said he thought you’d look better in a lavender dress with an open back.” Yuri couldn’t help but laugh. He had no idea that Karol thought he was beautiful. The leader of Brave Vesperia had many surprises in him.

“He thinks I would look good in a lavender dress huh? I’d probably trip and rip it.”

“Judith thought you should wear a red dress. They all bickered for a long time. It was quite sweet.”

“I hope Raven didn’t have a say in it.”

“He was too busy laughing in the corner.”

Yuri chuckled. “What do you think Repede. Should I wear a dress?” His canine companion glanced up from Flynn’s side. The dog only yawned in response before returning to sleep.

“I think he says no.” Yuri looked back at his fiancé who gave him a little smile. He sighed, and leaned back in his chair, rubbing his eyes.

“Flynn, I don’t know if I can walk in front of hundreds of people.”

“I know. But this wedding could never be kept under wraps.” Flynn said. He leaned over, gesturing for Yuri’s hand. The other gently grasped the blonde’s hand.

“But I think it’ll be nice. I do wish you could walk down wearing a white dress.”

“I mean you did call me the ‘wife of the commandant’ when you first starting ‘courting me.” Yuri gestured, with a fake sour pout. Flynn let out a laugh, a loud one making the other smile.

“Your so traditional to the bone. You would have fought anyone for ‘my hand’ wouldn’t you?”

“Of course!” Flynn agreed, making Yuri chuckle.

“Why?”

“Because you, my dear, are the most amazing, hard-working, beautiful…” Flynn started. Yuri wanted to face palm. Oh no, it was going to be one of those cheesy speeches wasn’t?

“Oh Flynn, no.” Yuri groaned but the other still continued, as he rose from his spot at the desk and made his way around to his beloved.

“Strong, caring, loving, protective-“

“You’re forgetting pain in the ass.” Yuri added.

“Well that too- but- your just- you are my rock Yuri.” Flynn almost sighed, wrapping his arms around the other.

“I know, that’s cheesy as all hell, but that’s what I feel towards you. Whenever the stress starts hitting me, whenever I start thinking ‘to hell with all of this’ you know; commandant business, I think of you. And your patience.”

Yuri wanted to kick himself for not suppressing that harsh blush that came up in his cheeks. He was about to say something, but all his words just died in the back of his throat. Everything he had been letting bottle up all week (or well, you could argue for all his life really) had suddenly just boiled over in the form of a few tears streaming down his cheeks.

“Yuri?”

If the member of brave vesperia was irritated at himself for getting all blushy because of the compliments his soon-to-be husband had lovingly called him, then he was furious for straight up crying in front of him. The break down was gradual, as he got choked up and began to quietly cry. He hadn’t cried in years. He wasn’t used to doing so.

“Yuri? Hey, hey what’s wrong?” Flynn asked now more visibly worried. He was now in front of his partner, kneeled in front of him. Yuri hated himself so much. He had interrupted Flynn’s meeting (even if it was with Sodia) and now he was crying. Great. He didn’t know if it was the blonde’s gentle words or the stress that had been steadily building up all week but either way he couldn’t stop crying.

It’s not to say that Yuri thought badly of his emotions, people could deal with their feelings however they saw fit. If crying was a good way to get it out, then that was okay. He didn’t think of it was a weakness. It’s just… he preferred keeping all his vulnerability behind closed doors. He didn’t understand why it had to be this particular moment for him to crack.

“Yuri.” Flynn said, with a little more command, reaching up to pull his hands away from his face. Tears were now streaming down the other’s now red blotchy face. It didn’t help, or so Yuri thought, that he was kind of an ugly crier too. Jeez, maybe that’s why he always kept it hidden.

Either way, he was forced to come eye-to-eye with Flynn’s strong but reassuring gaze. He didn’t look scared, or awkward, just- steady. Yuri wasn’t sure how else to describe it.

“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t- I didn’t mean to-“

“It’s all right. We all have our days. I know I certainly have mine.” Flynn quietly laughed. He took Yuri’s hand and intertwined it with his own.

“But just know I’ll always be here. So don’t worry.” He never questioned what was wrong with the other, he just seemed to know. All of Yuri’s doubts, worries, fears were quelled with just that reassuring gesture. And yet more tears spilled down Yuri’s cheeks.

“Flynn-“

“Shh. No more tears.” Flynn said, kissing Yuri’s forehead.

“Why don’t I bring some coffee? Lie down on the couch for a bit, and after I’m done with my paperwork we can go to my chambers. How’s that sound?” Flynn offered. Classic Flynn. He even knew that tea wasn’t his preference, Yuri liked coffee more. Yuri wiped away his tears and nodded.

“Go lie down. You’re just tired. Things always feel weird when we’re tired.”

Yuri nodded and obeyed. Normally he would have said he would be fine or that it was nothing but lying down sounded nice. This week was just too damn long, and he just needed to put it away with a long nap.

Notes:

I gave up on my switch save file of this game because it's been having issues lol, so I finally downloaded to my PS5 and restarted. Gotta say, it really gets a lot of old memories rolling in. It's very comforting. And then it made me remember this story I did during covid I think when I was still playing the game on the switch. Yuri seems like a low key guy lol.
