What’s in a gift?

Summary:

Dick Grayson is many things to many people. He’s a hero, a leader, and an all around stand-up guy. But this group would consider themselves amiss if they didn’t add “mother” to that list of titles.

Chapter 1: Jason

Chapter Text

This is stupid. Dick isn’t his mom. And Tim is a fucking idiot for trying to suggest otherwise.

Jason wouldn’t be an asshole if he ignored it. If he ignored Tim’s stupid fucking group text – [hey, im getting dick a mothers day gift rn, anybody else getting him smth? also do u have any suggestions bc im really hitting a wall rn] – which, first of all, fuck him for crowd-sourcing his Mother’s Day gift. If he wants to get Dick something, then he should pick his own damn gift. Second of all, fuck him for acting like it’s some given that they should be getting Dick a goddamn Mother’s Day gift.

And yet, here he is. At a jewelry store of all things. He thought about just grabbing some flowers and calling it a day, but he’ll be damned if he risks letting
Tim Drake upstage him. Jewelry is still fairly traditional, but it’s pretty upscale as far as Mother’s Day gifts go, right? Besides, any flowers would be dead within the month. Maybe faster, he doesn’t know how good Dick is with plants.

He’s looking for bird motifs, because if anyone would appreciate something so on the nose, it would be Dick. It would be thoughtful, but not too thoughtful. He doesn’t want Dick to think he was trying too hard.

If he picks something too flashy Dick will never wear it, and it’ll just end up collecting dust in a desk drawer somewhere. Lab grown gems are probably the thing to look for too, and it would give Dick an excuse to go on a tangent about the science behind it. Bird motif, subtle, lab grown gems if any, he’s got a decent list of factors to narrow down his search. It does mean he’s going to be stuck searching for a while, but he’d rather take his time because he has a clear idea of what he’s looking for rather than take his time because he can’t come to a decision.

A ring would just be weird. So a necklace or bracelet it is. Whichever he finds first of the two will work just fine.

Jason ends up visiting several stores and chatting with one too many jewelers asking about the
who and the why. If he doesn’t tell them they assume it’s for a girlfriend, but if he does let slip that it’s a Mother’s Day gift he has to deal with gushing and what a sweet young man you are. It’s a lose-lose situation.

He does eventually find something. A bracelet, modest but classy as all hell. Shaped to look like a flock of birds in flight. Dick would love it, and Jason would roll his eyes, saying something like
of course you would.

Dick will see right through him, of course, but Jason isn’t going to throw away his tough guy image just because it doesn’t work on one person.
